"Fake News" Study Cites Ch. 9 Again

WCPO-TV (Ch. 9) has been cited again in a national study about stations airing public relations video in newscasts – but this time for doing it right.
Ch. 9 was one of two stations mentioned for attributing the source of a video news release (VNR) aired in a newscast in "Still Not The News: Stations Overwhelmingly Fail To Disclose VNRs" released Tuesday. http://www.prwatch.org/fakenews2/execsummary
It was a follow-up by the Center for Media and Democracy to its April report in which Ch. 9 – and 76 other stations – were cited for airing so-called “fake news,” or video news releases from public relation agencies without crediting the source.
On Oct. 5, Ch 9 ran a clip from software-maker Computer Associates. The "Not The News" study said: "Ten seconds into the story, consumer reporter John Matarese reveals to viewers that the 'video was provided to us by Computer Associates.' WCPO-9 had been cited twice in CMD’s April 2006 'Fake TV News' report, for airing unlabeled VNR content from a pharmaceutical company and a floral trade group. The station has clearly improved their disclosure policy since then, and is to be commended for identifying the VNR’s sponsor to viewers."
The Ch 9 citation is at http://www.prwatch.org/fakenews2/vnr64

  2. Ivanhoe does a lot of those Health pieces (I used to edit them at a previous station), but they're not affiliated with any one hospital or health industry. I wonder where they fall on the "fake news" thing.

  3. I think all of the health and consumer segments smell fishy.

But I know people who believe them, young and old.

Is coffee good or bad for you this week?? I'll wait for Carol Williams to tell me on her "Healthy Living" paid spot.

  11. The automotive reviews seem to lack a certain sincerity. You would not want to anger the automotive advertisers.

  14. Ivanhoe is a former subsidiary of Pentathol, Inc. Pentathol was a major supplier of sodium pentathol in the 1960s.

  15. I thought Ivanhoe was something thet three musketeers shouted as they rode off to fight the evil bad person.

  19. Not sure where the facts came from regarding the Liz Bonis bashing. Being in the health and fitness industry for many years, it is easy to spot a fake and Liz does not fit this mold.

I am an educator in health and fitness and admit that I am very hypersensitive to fakes in the industry. After being interviewed by her, watching her stories, and visiting with her in-depth about her job, I quickly realized what an incredibly dedicated journalist she is.

I cannot speak for other journalists, but I know that Liz busts her tail to not only come up with her own stories, but she also takes great pride in making sure the facts are right. Maybe the Dayton station recognizes this and follows?

  20. FAKE NEWS, Is that anything like falsifying the news to get ratings? Cause that is what WLWT Channel 5 is notorious for.
