So what did I miss?
So what did I miss?
I’m just back after a month off, recovering from colon surgery, and trying to catch up to everything on TV and radio and everywhere else, as May sweeps start today…
I’ve seen Channel 9’s new sports reporter – Lisa Cornwell from WCBI-TV in Columbus, Miss. She’s a Little Rock native who went to the Univ. of Arkansas on a golf scholarship. She' was a pretty good basketball player too, says John Popovich, Channel 9 sports director. She replaces Paula Faris, who went to Chicago in October.
And I’ve seen Channel 5’s Marina Jurica, the new weekend morning weather person. She comes from WKYT-TV in Lexington, where he husband, Joseph, is completing his cardiology fellowship at the University of Kentucky. Jurica, who speaks Croatian and French, has worked at KMIR-TV in Palm Springs and Channel One News in Los Angeles. She grew up in Vancouver and California, and studied opera performance, journalism, and astronomy at UCLA. She’s working on a BS in geosciences from Mississippi State University. Her Channel 5 bio says she likes to sing, surf and snow ski.
Sweeps start today
With May sweeps starting today, I could use your help. I’m interested in reading your comments on whether some of the new spring tryout shows (Teachers, Heist, Pepper Dennis) are worth watching -- or what else you consider TV's best shows -- as we head into the final 4 weeks of the TV season. In the next couple of days, I'll post dates for the final episodes of "Will & Grace," "The West Wing," "Malcolm in the Middle," "7th Heaven" and other shows we know are leaving the air.
News views
I also want you to use this blog during May sweeps as your forum for comments on the local TV news sweeps special reports we’ll see for the next four weeks. I can't watch them all, and would like to read what you liked and didn't like.
Thanks!

GLAD to See You back John . Ive watched Pepper Dennis and i think its OK but I will have to wait and see it for a couple more episodes to give it a thumbs up or down.
and a Rest in Peace to former channel 12 critic Roger Grooms
I have been watching teachers every week. Its funny, but isnt it odd that all the teachers hang out at the same bar after school.
I absoutley love the office. it should win an emmy for best comedy. I can't wait till rescue me comes back in the end of may.
Welcome back, John. I hope you're feeling better.
I don't have much time for TV these days but the only show worth watching in my opinion is "Mythbusters" on Discovery.
Hi John A question for you what do you think of the new news for channel 64 by channel 12 i think it has been in the works for a while because 12 seems to have been adding more reporters so i was thinking something was up
Oh I forgot nice look
Glad to have you back John!
Welcome back John.
I think Marina Jurica will do fine...being a degreed meteorologist is overrated...none of the health reporters (locally) are doctors, most anchors aren't political science majors...the weather is prepared by a meteorologist, so whoever presents it is pretty irrelevant. I've watched Marina for awhile on WKYT (a benefit of Insight Cable) and she does a good job and is very personable.
As for sweeps, I see Channel 19 is going back to an old favorite: the Cincinnati subway. Haven't we been down that story before (pun intended).
So Sweeps are about to begin. Any bets on how predictable the stations will be?
Will WLWT save our lives reporting about either bird flu's impending impact on Cincinnati or the microscopic diseases lurking at tanning or nail salons or Tom Sussi throw a bone or two from his "doghouse"?
Will WCPO teach us not how to waste our money, by rescripting Consumer Reports videos and probing I-Team investigations on Queen City Barrel or Drake Hospital or make us feel better with another heartwarming story from Club19's Michael?
Will WKRC spin the wheel on Cold Corpses, uh I mean Cases. Will we see Local12 promote turning in newborns or self-promote their spanish news in various forms?
Will WXIX cover Jack and Rich's weight gain after they end the weight loss game or will we see massive breasts examinations (uh, I mean a lot of examinations) on the 19th? Who's your buddy???
As for me, I'm going down to the new Sight and Sound store, next to Mayor's Jewelers, at Plummett Mall and watch Ira Joe do live cut-in's during "The Movies on TV12"!.
cenitags
Welcome back, Kiese.
I have been keeping up with the final days of "The West Wing" I really don't think that bringing back Rob Lowe was necessary.
Lee Ann
I really wanted to like Pepper Dennis, and I'm a big WB fan. It just seemed flat and like it was trying to be too cute. It's too bad because I wanted to find a show to replace Related, now that the season over.
To the above poster who says
being a degreed meteorologist is overrated? That is one of the most ignorant statements I have heard in a while. I would think that since the Cincinnati area has had a history of very nasty and life-threatening weather (Sayler Park tornado of '74 and Blue Ash of just a few years ago) people would want someone that is competent and knowledgeable enough to inform them of what is going on with a storm instead of a rip-and-reader with no meteorological education whatsoever that could potentially get them killed.
The weather is prepared by a meteorologist? you are exactly right. I can guarantee you any of the meteorologists (and I do mean degreed meteorologists), whether it is Steve Horstmeyer, Valarie Abati or John Bateman actually PREPARE their forecast rather than rip from the NWS. So whoever presents it IS RELEVENT.
Welcome Back and good luck!
The Office is OUTSTANDING !! The best comedy on TV today ! I'm glad the Liberal, West Wing is history.
