Away from the TV

I'm sneaking out for a week of vacation. If I see something worth commenting on, I'll post a blog -- but I don't plan on it. In fact, don't plan on watching much TV. Gonna be watching the highway driving on our family vacation, or watching the ocean at the beach.
Emmy nominations come out tomorrow (7/6), but most of the folks I think are deserving probably won't get nominated. Anything for "Earl," "West Wing," "Everybody Hates Chris," "Lost," "Scrubs" or "Boston Legal?" Probably not much...
Check back periodically, and catch me for sure on the 17th.

Could someone PLEASE tell Marina Jurica on Ch. 5 that she doesn't need to give the WIND CHILL when it's 90 degrees out!

That genius hire of Brennan Donnellan is just another "chilling" reason why WLWT remains mired in distant 4th!

Quick, someone help...I'm FREEZING!!!

at 7/05/2006 11:58 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Silly me....it seems that in the past, when the spring and summer hit, WIND CHILL would be changed to HEAT INDEX.

I wouldn't necessarily blame this on the news director. Where is the "Chief Meteorologist" in all of this? Isn't he responsible for the overall look and content of "his" newscasts (since all weather crawls state his name, though I doubt he's working 24/7 for us!)? Tony would have done it correctly.

Did anyone else hear that Tanya O'Rourke got married over the weekend?

at 7/05/2006 1:29 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Marina is too wacky for me.....she's like hyper all the time. I can't take it. And she kind of has an annoying voice, too.

at 7/05/2006 2:00 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Apparently Tanya did get married...Steve Norris referred to her husband on yesterday's newscast.

Marina is a bit bubbly/cheerleader-esque, especially for early morning weekdays. 10am on Saturdays, she's not so bad - the wind chill thing notwithstanding.

Was interesting trying to watch the Macy's fireworks show last night on 5 with Jimmy's weather panics cluttering up the corner and the bottom crawl. As it turns out, that show was so badly directed and poorly produced, it didn't really matter.

BMurdock...the only topic here is TV and everyone's stuck to it so far, so go'head and remove that stick.

And Anon 11:58am, if that was a Tony Sands reference, that's a classic.

about tonya o'rourke... i noticed she all of a sudden was sporting an engagement ring and then in one newscast she mentioned something about "meeting the right guy, like i did..." she talks about raising her two kids a lot too. is this the second marriage or finally marrying the father of her kids? who has the inside track on this?

This would be Tanya's second marriage. She does have 2 kids from the first.

Kinda curious to see if 19 picks up Harvey Smilovitz for their sports department, or if they'll go for a female like 9 and 12.

at 7/05/2006 3:36 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Actually it Tanya's THIRD marriage.

And this guy is NOT the father of her two kids.

The guy in the SECOND marriage is.

Tony Sands was a class act. True National television history....and the Today's Show's first meteorologist!

It's funny...I can't see Tony Sands, Ken Torrey, Gary Rizzo or Steve Horstmeyer (and even Bill Myers, Debbie or Maureen) either freaking people out or hitting them over the head with panic-weather. Now, hawking a Jeep or a Totes umbrella giveaway...that was cute. Something that Gimme5 Weather won't be seen doing these days...just promoting their "power of 5" fake radar sweep screen.

wow, three marriages for tonya o'rourke? whew!! don't ya' feel bad for the kids? hopefully third time is the charm! ya' figure after a first failed marriage she would know how to pick a fight guy for a successful marriage. let's just hope she really did find the right guy this time. best wishes to her!!

question for whomever knows or cares even if you dont reading the story about the 3 alarm fire in carthage there is a picture with a caption
"Firefighters on the scene from Air19"

what in the heck is air 19 ?

I noticed 19 had stable aerial video of the Carthage fire. Did they renew a deal for a chopper?

BTW...the most powerful newsteam? 19? If there's news in Cincinnati, it's usually news to 19.

I am so tired of breaking news or developing news like tonite on local 12 at eleven with the kings island roller coaster problem it was breaking news at 5:30 or so while it was still happening not at eleven

Did anybody see Angela "whatsherface" on Channel 5 Sunday night? She was talking about the PKI situation, and said she didn;t know many details. Just then Courtis Fuller told her he had the public relations person on the phone. Angle "whatsherface" did the old "W.T.F." face! There was a split screen and I guess she thought they had gone back to the studio, but she was still on screen and looked like a fool. She must ahve been pissed that she had just said thetre were no details available, and then Courtis had them.

What a pro!

I wouldn't have been angry once I heard the PR flack gave her "details". Stations'da been better off just making stuff up.

the only way news5 could get great ratings is to have sandra and sheree do topless mudwrestling live at 5:00, 5:30, 6 and 11

at 7/10/2006 6:15 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

i think that would get ratings! they could also do what fox news does and just have the female anchors and reporters wear low cut tops and short skirts and remove the desk! but there was something on another part of this blog about sandra ali only wearing black pants. was that in this blog? but as bad as they're going now, do you really think mudwrestling would boost the ratings?

Mentioning Tony Sands reminded me of why he was let go...I think this was the blizzard years, and he got into big trouble for two things(0ne was a conflict of interest when it was discovered that one of the reasons he was predicting record snowfalls was because he was a spokesman for a snow blower company. The other was his reference to it being cold enough to freeze off a certain part of a monkey's anatomy,or maybe a witch's.... I dont know, didnt hear the comment but I do that shortly after that he was let go.

How long before we see you on camera, like MSNBC?

Let's face it, all of local television is an embarassment. Stick to straight news, kill the gimmicks and watch your ratings improve. Forget consultants.

Listen to what Mother used to say (that would be Ruth Lyons for you non-Cincinnatians)....treat the viewer with dignity and respect and they will give you the same.

Cincinnati viewers are not like Erie, PA, Des Moines, IA or even Cleveland. Treat the viewer like family....because that's how the typical viewer wants to be treated. You can have your yuck yucks every now and then, but when it comes to news, give the news, be yourself and not some fake Ted Baxter persona.

That's what kills me about most of the on camera folk...they are trying to be someone instead of being themselves, relaying the story.

So those of you who work at 5, 9, 12 and 19 (FYI: I don't work for any), you don't have to go back to Douglas Edwards giving the news but the tabloid-izing of the news has to end. It doesn't do any good to the viewers nor to the technical people behind the camera, trying/dealing with/making on-camera folk seem intelligent.

And since we are getting a crop of new on camera people/traffic-ites:
Lebanon: Leb-eh-non
Reading: Redding
Versailles: Ver-sails
Cheviot: Chev-ee-et
Route 127 is Hamilton Avenue
Route 22 and 3 is Montgomery Road
Route 42 and Lebanon Road is THE SAME!
Kroger: Kroger (NO 's)
Kings Island: not King's
WLWT: double ewe ell double ewe
Meteorologist: the 2nd syllable is EE (Meat-EE-ore-ologist)
and for Janell Walton:
any sentence with an A, the A is uh, the is thau, not thEE.

Hey, any reason why every map of the tri-state has to be animated?

at 7/11/2006 10:36 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Market research....that's funny. How were the questions crafted? Were the questions written like a channel 12 flash poll, where you get to answer yes or no or one of these definitive answers without a "none of the above" answer.

Would love to see the Lykert scale questioning for the market research!

Severe weather coverage - and a note to the All-Knowing poster who gave info to all the "new" TV people in town, and "Traffic-ites."

Truckers use the route numbers. You don't know everything. You made some very good and vaild points. But keep in mind - MANY state routes actually CHANGE their local street names as you follow them along. Case in point - SR-126, on the other side of Montgomery Road, is NOT referred to as the Ronald Reagan Cross-County Highway.

NOW - since everyone seems to enjoy posting about sever weather coverage in town - just flipping through the channels during these nasty storms in Clermont and Warren counties, and here's what I've found:

19 - Richie Baby broke in to the All-Star game, and ACTUALLY SAID there were "NO reports of any serious or damaging winds" in the area. (Yet the NWS was saying that small trees were uprooted, and there were numerous reports of damage to home sin the area? WTF?) Waaaay off base. Horrible coverage.

12 - Timmy Boy didn't even know the names of his own tools he was using, and stumbled over just about every word. He probably had his mind on how Bob H. is slowly stealing his summer grilling gigs instead of the storm. The maps were waaay too busy to understand.

9 - Mr. Big Cleft had the names of the aforementioned State Routes right in front of him - and STILL got them wrong (showing SR126 - and said "yep - that's route 26") Pat Barry/Mark Sebastian style radio voice was clear, but was scrfewing up some of the info. Not bad coverage - but not the best, either. Kind of over-dramatic. (and again, still has no concept of the names of certain areas, etc. You're not in San Fran any more!)

5 - Jimmy had the best coverage, by far. Say what you want about the whole "Power of 5" crap - Jim O'Brien gave the clearest and most concise information about the storms. He took his time, to make sure he got things right - but still moved quickly enough to get the information out in a timely manner. 5 is lucky to have him.

No BS, no cheerleading going on here - just simply put, hands down, JO and channel 5 had the best storm/severe weather coverage tonight. Clear, easy to read maps and icons - VERY well explained, without the "oh my God, we're all gonna die" drama. They didn't need to go to Sandra Bling for more info - other than just to give Jim a short and much needed rest. Great info, delivered in a way even the stupidest people could understand. Great job, Channel 5.

at 7/11/2006 8:53 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

To the holier-than-thou turd who posted their "useful info" on pronounciations, etc. - whatever. Truck drivers use the state route numbers to travel through the area - so it's useful information. Using BOTH names for a road is sometimes helpful. "New traffic-ites?" There's only ONE that does a great job - the other clones are still struggling to keep up. Maybe THEY are the "fake" people you're referring to?

As for "Krogers" um, I think you'll find that it's people who have lived here THEIR WHOLE FREAKING LIVES that refer to the store as "Krogers," not "Kroger." It's a colloquialism. It is NOT what people from other parts of the world say. It's a LOCAL thing - so maybe YOU "ain't from around here...?"

Don't be such a puss - if you have something to say to someone in local tv, go for it - send it TO THE SOURCE.

at 7/11/2006 8:56 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

I agree with the above poster as far as storm covergae goes. Jim O'Brien did a great job tonight. And he's the least "fake" weather person in town, by FAR.

at 7/11/2006 9:13 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Who is FAR?

at 7/11/2006 9:32 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Pete...you're up late! Glad to see there's no "BS." Considering your traffic reports are 15 minutes outdated by the time I get to the highway, I'll stick with WLW radio, thanks.

As for Jim O'Brien, you're "cheerleading" is so blatantly transparent, it's absurd.

Get a life. People's lives are at stake when these storms move through. From what I've seen from all 3, they're all doing fine. You people are so petty.

Kudos to 12 for getting home video, but next time, you might want to make sure you can actually see the tornado in the video. If you have to tell people where to look and what to look for, and it's _still_ invisible, it might be best to move on.

at 7/11/2006 10:11 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

When the stations start doing this emergency weather stuff, thats when I change the channel or turn it off. Put your weather alerts on your weather channels 5 and 9. not on the network channel. Maybe a crawl at the bottom saying to tune in to channel 5.2 or 9.2 for the latest on the weather would be good enough. That way you don't mess with the network programming. Otherwise, I just change to the Dayton station and hope that they aren't doing the same.

at 7/11/2006 11:45 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Anyone know if the regular programming that wasn't shown will be reshown at a later time?

I'm pretty sure that if there is a tornado coming to your area, you will be under a heavy object in your basement as they all pointed out. Plus so much electricity was out, I think the people who didn't have any storms watched more of the coverage.

To Mr./Ms. Anonymous (at 9:32) ...

Yes, that would've been a late time to be awake at night for us early risers. And I bet Mr. Beasley might be a little groggy this morning, after going back in to work last night! But he loves covering severe weather, and does a great job IMHO.

Referring to my past posts, just a reminder - I do NOT post anonymously on this or any other blog site. Nice try :-)

Just thought I'd see what viewers thought of the storm coverage last night - now, it's off to work. Hope everyone has a great rest of the week!

Wow! Sandra and Sheree looked really good last night! I was glad to see them with the weather coverage. Maybe it was the thrill of "real breaking news." Jim did a good job. Can't stand channel 9 storm coverage. That Steve Raleigh guy is way to "sensational" when he is discussing things. He was much more toned down when he worked at channel 5 some 15 years ago as a weekend forecaster. I wonder what happened to him? At any rate, a big WOW to Sandra and Sheree! Those are the faces I'd like to see when severe weather is striking...of course, with Jim's information too!

MEMO TO ALL WLWT-TV/CH. 5 EMPLOYEES POSTING ON THIS BLOG

After looking at Tuesday's numbers (Nielsen Overnights), you've got a LOT of work to do. As is ALWAYS the case, WLWT was in distant last place with its breathless tornado weather coverage.

Additionally, your morning show was in dead last place (uhhh, that would be FOURTH!). In fact, on Monday, your morning show couldn't even pull a "1.0" rating from 6:30-7:00 a.m. Now THAT is BAD!

[wonders to self] How much longer will it be before your boss is shown the door and a new news director comes in and cleans house? Real soon, I suspect.

Some advice: You all need to be honing your skills and trying to get the best tape possible (IF that's possible).

After all, you're IN THE BOOK...and with numbers like that, NONE of you will be around long.

Now get off this little-read blog, stop anonymously trying to build yourself up and...

Get back to work!!!

It's amazing what people say to make themselves feel better about, well, themselves. I'd love to see if the pompous jerks posting on this tiny blog do the same thing elsewhere on the 'net. Might be an interesting story in there. How people with no lives love to write about people in the media - out of jealousy, despair, low self-worth, anything like that.

I just wish there was a more educated, respectable place to actually discuss local television. If there was a knob on this piece of filth, right about now, you'd be hearing this: *click.*

Um, NewsDirector5, please explain when you tout Jim O'Brien as the most trusted meteorologist in the tri-state -- BASED ON WHAT???

How are you measuring trust to back up that claim??

Or is this the same baseless claim like "the undisputed weather leader" or "your official school closing station." Because neither of those statements is true either. Who made WLWT the official school closing station?? NO ONE! There is no such thing.

The Miller brothers were great. The older brother said he plays the drums so maybe switch to that. The harmonica kid is awesome. I couldn't wait for the dog guy to get off the stage. That way horrible.

it's so funny how this blog just takes on a life of it's own when mr. kiese is gone! really it's great how people argue and disagree about the smallest of details. speaking of small details, did anyone notice that sandra ali wasn't wering black pants today? also, karin johnson did a story about some teens who had a rare type of thyroid cancer. did she ever reveal what type it was? either i'm deaf or i didn't hear it. kiese come back!

WIZF is moving to 101.1 to allow Radio One to move 100.3 WIFE from Connersville to Norwood. 101.3 WFMG Richmond also has to drop power to allow this change. I'll miss G101.3. It was one of my favorite stations. Now all I'll hear is the hash from WIZF's Iboc on 101.3.

There is also a new station coming to 88.9.

I was unaware that Nielson sent numbers for "key demos" overnight. That's pretty amazing. I thought those weren't released until after ratings were completed.

Anyway: still awaiting that promo saying Jim O'Brien is the most trusted meteorologist in the tristate. I wonder how those slogans would play in other venues?

Enron: the most trusted name in energy.

Pinto: the undisputed leader in vehicle safety.

Think those would pass a review by the Federal Trade Commission??

Is it ethical for a TV station to say a story was "first on" their station when it was actually reported in a newspaper first?

I loved the Snowbird Penguin. He was cute.

Was it just me or on Tuesday night when all the stations covered the weather for hours and hours...I noticed several "exclusive" viewer photos kept showing up on all of the stations. I noticed at least 3 of the same pictures and viewers names.

Does channel 9 not have the penguin anymore? Oh yeah, anybody have any trivia about Emily Longnecker besides the obvious... she's stunningly gorgeous!!

Funny you should bring up viewers photos/videos on the newscasts.... Really, how lame is your life if you take pictures and videos and send them to TV stations; or go on vacation and send postcards to Tim Hedrick??

at 7/15/2006 9:49 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

It's funny to see how many posts seem to come from channel 5 employees.

If you spent half the time putting a real newscast together than blogging gripes about the competition, perhaps your ratings would improve.

Gripe about the racial makeup of staff, postcards from viewers, etc...isn't the current promotion at WLWT where the viewer does the legwork and 5 "sends a crew"...oh and "you tell us your 5 top stories". How about you make editorial control and produce a stellar newscast.

Oh....to the post a while back about Ronald Reagan Cross County always referred to by people at 126....gimme a break. For us residents of the area for more than 6 arbitron books, 126 used to be Remington Road, Pfieffer Road and whatever Pfieffer turned into once past Rt 42 to Springfield Pike. The current 126 has always been called Cross County...add the Reagan reference in the late 80's/early 90's.

local 12 has two everyday black anchors while 5 has zero. True 5 has the first black meterologist in the market and derek is doing a great job.

at 7/15/2006 2:35 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Correction, WLWT had an African-American meteorologist in the 1990's, Chris Wright.

And, correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Derek actually the most qualified for the WLWT Meteorology staff? (I'm not saying he's the more television friendly...he still looks like he should be working at Jake Sweeney or Tom Gill). Shouldn't he actually be the chief meteorologist? It's not like WLWT hasn't demoted a meteorologist (or two or three).

at 7/15/2006 9:15 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

yeah remember when Ch. 5 had Anglique Frame as Chief Meterologist, she went on maternity, and when she came back from her maternity, they had hired a new chief meteorlogist "Byron Webre" to take her place?!?!?! What was up with that!??!

I'm suprised she didn't sue them or something.......

at 7/15/2006 11:21 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

She might have been given money not to sue. We never knew the outcome of Norma's lawsuit, just that the station settled.

Anyone just watch the Fox 19 10:00 news when they ran the opening with Dan Hoard's name. When they went back to Meghan Mongillo (who was anchoring) she looked shocked or something to that affect.

To the preson saying Derek should be working at a car dealership....please explain that. It makes absolutely no sense.

Are you saying black folks belong at car dealerships selling cars rather than on TV?

at 7/17/2006 6:57 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

I don't think it has anything to do with race, but I do wonder myself what a car salesman is supposed to look like.

Maybe the above poster's definition of "TV friendly" is blond hair/brunette blue eyes and a coke bottle figure.

Who knows?

at 7/17/2006 12:57 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

derek will be a chief meterologist soon. I would like to see him become 5's chief afterall he is the most qualified meterologist in the tristate!!!!!

John:
Anything you can do about the "news dweebs" shooting at each other on this blog? Last thing I need to do is remember another login and password, but maybe your blog should require registration. Looks to me like reporters and producers in Cincinnati have an average age of pre-teen 12.

News ratings must be down because they're all on here going "nanner-nanner, neener-neener."

at 7/18/2006 10:25 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

i saw the grocery game. i didn't quite understand it, but i guess it could work. sandra's outfit looked a little snug on her. an extra 15-30 seconds may have added a lot to the story which seemed a bit rushed for me.

Yeah I agree John. This blog seriously needs an overhaul. It's almost to the point where it is detrimental to the reputation of the Cincinnati market in the eyes of others that happen to stumble upon this blog and read some of the garbage posted on here.

Typical of our newsroom...

Don't solve the problems people are complaining about, just shut down the discussion.

at 7/18/2006 2:23 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Most of those that post here are in the communications business, so I find it hilarious that some want this "viciousness" or opponing differences of WLWT AND other stations to cease and go away.

I think a lot of what is discussed here is CONSTRUCTIVE criticism, though some items, like listing of 3rd weddings, etc., is a bit much.

why is there a bio for michael moely, but none for karin johnson? i know she worked for ch.64 before they shut down that newscast. anyone know what she did in the time between leaving 64 and joining 5? she seems to be doing a pretty good job.

at 7/19/2006 11:07 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

I get the vague impression that the above post about Michael Moely had to be done by a news 5 staffer with the little twist about staff reductions to hide the tracks.

Look, this is not meant to be a slam against Mr. Moely, but his bio reads like about 99% of any TV reporter. Starts in a small market, works his way up to fill-in anchoring, has awards from X, Y, Z. I'm not discounting those awards, I'm sure he earned them, but just about every local reporter has the same. Perhaps he does have the qualities needed for a main anchor - but how could you judge that based on a couple weeks of reporting in Cincinnati?? And that's why I think a news 5 staffer wrote the post.

I do think its interesting that 5 tries to make their news team look bigger by including the Hearst Washington reporters.

Yeah....in the late 70's/early 80's with the 9 NewsFlash unit.

Michale Moley???

Worked at a fox station in Indianapolis... and in Grand Rapids, and was a producer at WNDU in South Bend?

Whats so impressive about that? I'm not knocking the guy, but somebody posted he was the second comming of Al Shotekote or something...... I don't see anything impressive on his bio at all.... and he isn't even good looking.... What makes this guy an Anchor candidate? Nothing at all.
