Just saw this on TVweek.com. Former Channel 12 anchor Edie Magnus has been laid off from "Dateline NBC," one of the first in the 700 job cubs announced earlier this fall by NBC Universal. The Web site says Magnus and correspondent Robb Stafford were among the 15 layoffs made Thursday. More cuts coming next week at the "Today" show and "NBC Nightly News."
Magnus, a Cincinnati native and Walnut Hills High School graduate, started her career as a writer/reporter for WEBN-FM, then moved to WUBE. She was weekend anchor here in 1985 when hired to be a reporter for ABC News and "Good Morning America." She also worked for CBS News and MSNBC before joining "Dateline" 10 years ago. She's a classy person. Not sure what she might do. She and husband Bob Mayer, a TV producer, have two sons, 11 and 8.
And some good news from NBC
NBC has ordered a full season of Aaron Sorkin's "Studio 60," which has lost audience after a phenomenal start. Seven weeks into the TV season, "Studio 60" is ranked #42 of 112 shows, averaging 10.1 million viewers. It is second in the time period to CBS' "CSI: Miami" (#6, 17.8 million). NBC says "Studio 60" draws "some of the highest audience concentrations" in viewers ages 18-49 earning $75,00 or more, with the head of household having four or more years of college. So that must make advertisers happy. I'm just glad the show will survive the season.
nder if magnus will try to comeback to cinci i mean we seem to have an influx of former tv people returning. what do you all think?

ReplyDeleteThe missus and me were downfounded....doesn't anyone proof these sponsored stars of the week. I'm sure the kid is an excellent athlete....We just thought the timing was not good. Ironic, that's all.
Does anyone know why Channel 9 continues to stick with Janell Walton on the weekends? Her prompter reading ability is horrible.

I took the lists that two of you provided here, plus the news articles I read about the station changes, plus the list from the back of the Enquirer Sunday TV schedule, and came up with this.
ReplyDeleteThe reason I had asked about this in the first place was because our office was updating its radio mailing list for press releases, and everything suddenly changed.
I know my list isn't complete, and if it's still inaccurate, I'd appreciate it if any of you could correct me.
P.S. I hope the Enquirer updates its radio list in the TV schedule soon. Right now it's only about half right!

ReplyDeleteFor you radio conspiracy theory fans, you'll like this one. I know it'll be snicker-inducing, but it is a bit of a touchy situation.
ReplyDeleteWSCH, the country music station in Dearborn County, has had its deejays read obituaries after the morning news for about as long as anyone can remember. The station has begun charging $100 each to read the obits over the air. The station bills the funeral homes for the announcement, which in turn bill the family.
WSCH apparently is hoping to eventually phase out the death notices altogether.
This is a problem, for two reasons. Lower-income families obviously don’t want another expense. The main problem is that many people in southeast Indiana don’t get the daily papers and the local newspapers are weeklies. In other words, without WSCH, many Hoosiers may not know that a person has died or when his or her funeral is until several days after the funeral is over.
Okay, go ahead with the snide comments....
I have been watching the first season of The Waltons on DVD. Although I remember the basic plots of most of the episodes, the finer details are something I have long forgotten, since I've not seen most of the episodes in at least 25 years.
ReplyDeleteOne of the episodes is entitled The Courtship, and is about Olivia's Uncle Cody Nelson.
Until I watched it again this week, I had forgotten where Cody was supposed to be from. He was a banker in Cincinnati who had been laid off. The episode talks about Cincinnati quite a bit and even mentions the paddle-wheelers on the Ohio River. The discussions provided a surprisingly accurate picture of what Cincinnati must have been like in 1933.
I think I remember reading that Earl Hamner used to work at WLW, so that may have had something to do with it.
Okay, I'll shut up now.

ReplyDeleteFYI, WGUC has nothing to do with UC and WVXU, likewise, has nothing to do with Xavier. both are collectively part of Cincinnati Classical Public Radio, Inc. WGUC is mainly classical with some NPR. WVXU is mainly news from NPR and BBC, with a little bit of jazz.

To Anon 8:58...Unless we're both imagining, it does look like Sandra Ali has gained some weight. Either that or Sheree has lost some weight. Maybe it's all the samples of wedding cake, or maybe the camera really adds 10 pounds. Maybe the hubby is a good cook... and another known fact that the side effects of "the pill" include nausea, headaches, and weight gain.

ReplyDeleteFYI - 94.9 "the sound" has said that THEIR call letters are now WYGY. Heard them say it this morning.

ReplyDeleteYes, 94.9 still technically WYGY-FM. But the call letters are being transfered to 97.3, to stick with the country format (as they were when it was on 96.5 and 94.9).
ReplyDeleteYes, 95.5 and 97.7 are simulcast. 97.7 is the old 97X from Oxford, and 95.5 is in Ripley. To make things more confusing, the office is in Sharonville. They're called "MAX" FM.

ReplyDeleteI had to do that when I worked in a radio station in Colorado. Every newscast...every day. We had to read the thing, and then repeat it so folks were sure to hear it. Every newscast. Every day.
My belief was...and still is to this day....if you were a friend or family member of the deceased, you already know they're dead and don't need me telling you. If not...odds are you don't care.
Anybody have a YouTube link to some classic Al Schottelkotte newscasts from the 60's or 70's? And then there's the famous "Channel 9" jingle that I'd like to add to my collection of mp3's.
