Don Imus and his "Imus in the Morning" syndicated show has lost its Cincinnati area affiliate. Middletown's WPFB-AM (910), which came in surprisingly strong down I-75 all the way to the Brent Spence Bridge, will dump its talk format tomorrow. The station becomes a classic country station Friday, playing Johnny Cash, George Jones, Dolly Parton, Tammy Wynette and the Oak Ridge Boys.
The Middletown AM station had been the outlet for Imus, Bill O'Reilly, Laura Ingraham and other syndicated shows that couldn't get into the Cincinnati or Dayton markets. But WKRC-AM picked up Ingraham when Tony Snow left Fox radio for the White House, and then the new "SupertalkFM96.5" launched in November with O'Reilly, giving him a much better signal for the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky market. So Middletown is pulling the plug on talk and going country oldies, to go along with WPFB-FM (105.9), the country Rebel that plays Toby Keith, Carrie Underwood and current country stars.
"Our focus will be on the biggest songs and artists from the '70s and '80s, with some handpicked country hits from the '60s and '90s," says Mark Evar, operations manager.
I'll miss Imus, his interviews with NBC reporters and newsmakers, and his comedy bits. I can't think of any area station where he'd be a logical fit. Maybe if Mancow bombs on FM96.5, they'll pick up Imus. Any suggestions?
I'll miss Imus, but a real country station with a signal one can hear isn't the worst.
ReplyDeleteIs WPFB going to have any live/local talent. There's plenty available if they want to make a go of this. Money talks, of course. But they haven't paid very well since John Randolph left in 1967.

In this column John stated they were both fiscal conservatives, but listening to the show reveals they are both very Libertarian! So how about giving it a chance. Change is good... ReplyDeletehmmm...channel 5 at 5 is #1 in adults 25-54, women 25-54, men 25-54, adults 18-49, women 18-49, men 18-49. in other words every demo that is sold to advertisers. and is only station to go up in demos from july to november while 9 continues to slide. what does that leave for 9's sales dept? 55+? glad i'm not hanging my hat or my salary on that!

Geraldo Rivera is no longer at large — at least in the broadcast world.
ReplyDeleteHis syndicated newsmagazine, Geraldo at Large, was canceled on Thursday and Rivera will return to weekend work at Fox News Channel.
The news-oriented newsmagazine was foiled, in part, because it didn't have a distinctive home within the 93 markets that were airing it, said Bill Carroll, an expert in syndication for Katz Television. It was broadcast live in the late afternoon, but nearly half the stations are showing it after 11:30 p.m., he said.
The show's audience also proved too small and too old, he said.
"Geraldo is a great talent and did a tremendous job for us in syndication," said Roger Ailes, who heads both Fox News Channel and the Fox-owned stations. "His ratings were climbing in several markets, including New York. However, with the soft ad marketplace, the lack of an early news lead-in for his show in several cities and the timeline for financial success, I've asked him to come back to Fox News Channel."
Rivera's weekend show at Fox News Channel, At Large with Geraldo Rivera, will resume after having been canceled because he took on the syndicated show. It runs both Saturday and Sunday. He'll also be a regular contributor to The O'Reilly Factor.
In a prepared statement, Rivera said he was happy his new deal allows him to cover breaking news.
"I'm proud to work for Roger and I'm a team player," he said.

His mistake will cost him a million bucks to Sharpton, a million to Jesse Jackson and a Million to Rutgers should solve the issue until another misspeak. Then he will have a slight chance to survive over a comment that black people make about their own kind every day. What a bunch of phoneys.

Now if you'd run that through the mentality of all concerned, it would seem that he was merely showing off his own personality and saying nothing of significance about anyone else.
I believe this is important to recognize. One of the girls on the team solemnly informs us that she's been scarred for life. Whoa! That's a powerful lot of years to predict harmful effects from a stupid, offhand remark.
Does anyone think society is doing this young woman a favor by inviting self-pity. Ten years from now: Oh, don't ask ME to be a joyful, productive citizen. I was scarred for life back in 2007. Twenty-three years from now in 2030: She's now about 40 years old. No, don't ask anything of me: I've been scarred for life by what's his name back in 2007. It maybe just me but it is my impression that there is suppose to be a freedom of speech in this country and the best I can tell, it still applies here with the comments on this page, however I suppose it doesn't apply when you have something like a job to lose... Just a thought... what happens when its your thoughts or what you say that is being scrutinized.. being it a joke or not in your perception that it is taken in. So if everyone had taken it as a big joke, as Imus is at times, then would there have been anything said... by the way in my opinion we are all jokes some times as I read in the newspaper and hear on the radio on a daily basis.
