Breaking News Alert: 64 Degrees at Channel 64
This just in... Ffrom the news ticker repeated several times during the 10 p.m. news tonight on Channel 64, from the Local 12 newsroom. Sunday's weather: "8 a.m., Clear and cool, 45.... Noon, Partly cloudy, mild, 64... 5 p.m., Partly cloudy, warmer, 71...."
During his weather segment, Ch. 12's John Gumm never mentioned the ticker temps. His high for Sunday was 30. Then he explained about the varying computer models for a possible major storm coming Monday or Tuesday, saying we could get another heavy snow -- or freezing rain -- or just rain. He ended his forecast by saying: "To be honest with you, this system is the type of system that can make us meteorologists look like idiots." I think he was talking about the next storm system, not the news ticker system, but I'm not sure....
To be honest with you, my favorite Weather Authority is George Carlin: "Tonight's forecast? Dark! Followed by widely scattered light."

I always listen to Les Nesman's Window to the Weather forecasts.
Where are the producers?????? Does anyone, in a control room booth, look up from their script and see what they are airing???

Your weather comments made me LAUGH out loud drinking my coffee this morning!
I LOVED Carlin as the Hippy Dippy weatherman..I believe he is sometimes featured on the Flip Wilson shows on TV Land in the Sunday morning hours..I saw Pryor on it this mornig.
That weather ticker is unreal..does somebody NOT READ those things when the station is ON the air.
I SO DREAD trying to watch Boston Legal Tuesday night or Leno or Letterman with THE BIG STORM THAT IS COMING OUR WAY.
How the hell would OUR weathermen handle upstate New York where they have LITERALLY 8-10 feet of snow?
I want to know if they have their tv pics distorted for days with ubiquitous, UNNCESSARY school closings.
Sheesh.
SOMEBODY needs to invent a pop up blocker add for the TV. I would buy one to keep this crap off my screen. I actually wrote a letter to the editor about this last year but it is still on my computer. I just read the paper online. I wonder if anybody COMPLAINS about that stuff or if they like it.
Me, I avoid local tv all the time due to news/rain/snow break ins at the drop of a hat.
But that weather temp being so off and the weathermen looking like idiot is classic.

You have just witnessed yet another reason why deregulation by the FCC has been an unmitigated disaster. And, now they want more.
John Gumm may be just another faceless forecaster passing through our town on the way to his self-perceived greatness. But it's the viewers who suffer.
Advances in technology are great. We have dopplers out the wazoo and crazed news directors who kick them into over-drive at the first sign of a snowflake. But when you over load your employees with pulling extra duty, this is what happens.
You may think it's a little thing. But it's really not.

That is CRAZY! And have you ever noticed that John Gumm is the only Ch.12 meteorologist to run that weather ticker during his weathercast?
I usually don't rant about Ch. 12, but I will have to say after watching John Gumm's forecast I felt more confused than before he started the weathercast!!! He's not as good as Tim and Steve. He bounces around a lot too, and is very, very LOUD.
I also noticed the "time" on the Local 12 Ticker was wrong, too!!!
It read something like: "1:05" or "12:00"

I heard that one too. He also said the same line on the 11pm news. I think someone didn't proof-read the ticker.

The "TV pop-up blocker" is a good idea Sophia. I'd buy one too.
When I was a little kid, I went on a tour of the Channel 5 newsroom in the old "Comex" building at 9th and Elm. Tony Sands had an artist's pad of blank maps of the U.S.
For his weather forecast each night he would take a big fat marker and draw all the frontal systems on the map, Red "L" for lows, Black "H" for highs and write in a bunch of temperatures.
After the show, he'd rip down the page and start drawing for the next newscast.
He was more accurate doing that, utilizing his expertise in forecast, than all the computerized junk they have now, with forecasters who have no expertise in forecasting.
Any 10-year old could go on the internet and come up with a weather forecast these days.
I'm not a fan of Gumm...but give me a break. John, like you've never made a mistake. I've noticed several mistakes by you on this blog
I got this email from Local 12's John Gumm:
"Hey Kiese,
I figured we would give a nice 30 degree spread in the forecast to make sure we were right!
Seriously, I had no clue that was on the screen until a nice viewer called to inform us. I then called my producer to have her take it out (I guess no one upstairs noticed). Most of the time, I don't see the ticker from the studio. Apparently, a computer glitch caused the system to run a news ticker with old data - really old. I honestly don't know how that is possible since I don't deal with that particular system. Thank goodness a viewer called in. I'm surprised people even read those, but thankfully they do.
Doesn't 71 sound good right about now? :-)

I do take a wickled delight in watching the weather people "waffle" on the forecast. It is nice to know that there are some things that "parent nature" still can control. Just recall, the Reds were supposed to lose the 1990 World Series.....

Not sure why one would think so.
Anyway, glad the weatherman cleared up the error on the ticker but honestly, don't the guys who produce pay attention to what the VIEWERS SEE? Guessing by the typos I see in today's graphic, that would be a no.
Unless of course, nobody can spell.

Funny thing about the school closings at the bottom of the screen. I was watching Jimmy Kimmel Thursday night and there were a ton of school closings on channel 9. When I switched over to watch Conan O'Brien, channel five only four schools listed. Whats up with that? I thought they were supposed to be the "official" school closing station!! Then they do a story admitting that a couple of kids got them to close their school when it was only on a delay.
Horay for WKRC 12 and WXIX 19 for not running school closings during the show on their digital channel.
Channel 9 has so much garbage on the screen you can barley see the program you are trying to watch!
WKRC has decided that weather related items are not needed on their digital channel, unless it is an emergency. WXIX cannot insert a graphic into the digital channel and the FOX splicer system makes the video HD, so unless WXIX buys what WCPO has, it will always be HD. WCPO did have too much crap on their digital channel. School closings and the large map right in the middle of the upper part of the screen. There is no need for that.
