Cocktails For Two, And More

Here's what I'm doing Saturday: Having "Cocktails for Two." Served by Spike Jones. And listening to other great comedy/novelty songs broadcast by Tom Sandman as a belated April Fools program 5-7 p.m. Saturday on WMKV-FM (89.3) and on http://www.wmkvfm.org/

Sandman has an awesome classic comedy collection for "Sandman Standards" Saturday: Spike Jones, Stan Freberg, Groucho Marx, Tom Lehrer, Bob Hope, Warner Bros. cartoon voice Mel Blanc, and one of my father's favorite 78s, Tex Williams' "Smoke Smooke Smoke (That Cigarette)."
I know this isn't for everyone, but I love this stuff. Thanks, Tom. You'll put a smile on my face all weekend just thinking about Freberg's Lawrence Welk parody, or Spike Jones' butchering a classic like "Dance of the Hours."

I used to work with Tom at WARM 98 (about 8 years ago) ... I was always in AWE of his collection of GREAT stuff like this.

Too bad I'm out of town this weekend. I know it'll be a great show.

Good luck, Tom! And Happy Easter.

Off-topic...

I saw Marina Jurica covering both the morning and evening weather segments on WCPO today. I'm guessing she is only freelancing.

I assume some news personalities take time off around the Easter holiday; Steve Norris was covering for Steve Raleigh on Friday night.

Kiese, your description didn't disappoint! I was running errands for the Mrs. and found myself glued to the car radio for nearly a half hour in the parking lot before I finally pried myself away to reluctantly enter the Kroger's. What a great show by Tom Sandman. Then WMKV had a Big Broadcast show devoted to the start of baseball season - great stuff I've never heard from Dizzy Dean and Babe Ruth, Red Barber with Phil Rizzuto. Right now they've got Hank Greenberg with Bing Crosby. Amazing!

John,
Good question from previous poster... what is the status on WCPO's job search... are we finally going to see some new talent over there? What's the inside scoop? How about column about this topic?

What y'all think about Lance Berry filling in for Julie O'Neil this weekend, and Jay Warren filling in for Julie O'Neil last weekend?

Possible new Good Morning Tri-State co-anchor?? Either one of them???

I remember Phil Harris' version of "Smoke Smoke Smoke."
Another of his hits was "The Thing." Definitely a novelty song - and weird because you never find out what the "thing" is.
