November News Ratings Update

November sweeps end Wednesday, and it doesn't look like any huge shifts in TV news viewing trends. With only two days to go, it's pretty obvious that Channel 12 will win mornings and 11 p.m., and Channel 9 will win 5-6:30 p.m. The one surprise is that Channel 9 will win noon, instead of Channel 12 (maybe from Drew Carey replacing Bob Barker on "The Price Is Right?" Or Dayna Eubanks departure?)

Here are the standings through Monday:
6-7 AM: 12, 9, 19, 5
Noon: 9, 12, 5
5-6:30 P.M.: 9, 12, 5
10 P.M.: 19, 64
11 P.M.: 12, 9, 5. (Ch 5 news virtually ties "The Simpsons," 4.2/8% share for Ch 5, 4.2/9% share for Ch 19).

I'll have more details and numbers on Thursday.

ChanThrough last night, here's

John, offtopic but....

A celebration of life for Mike Fenwick, a veteran radio and television broadcaster who most recently worked for WFYI-FM (90.1), will be at 1:30 p.m. Dec. 15 at the Nestle Inn, 637 N. East St.

Robert Michael Fenwick Jr., who died Nov. 18 at Indiana University Hospital after a brief battle with cancer, had been a longtime TV weather forecaster and anchor but mainly worked behind the scenes during his seven years in Indianapolis public radio.
"He was a producer for 'The Art of the Matter' for seven of its eight years," said Sharon Gamble, a co-host of the weekly arts program. "In the early morning hours, he also was the person you hear on the air during breaks in syndicated programming, and he served as the news voice. He really enjoyed the news."
Fenwick, 59, returned to his professional roots when he got back into radio about 10 years ago in Lexington, Ky. He had gotten his start during the late 1960s at a radio station in his hometown, Lebanon, Ky.
Fenwick spent roughly two decades with commercial and public TV stations. He was a weather forecaster on WKRC-TV in Cincinnati, an anchor in Denver and a host of "PM Magazine" in St. Louis and Greensboro, N.C.
"It was always kind of cool to see my brother on TV," said his younger brother, Lee Fenwick, who lives in Kansas City, Mo. "I remember growing up, watching him do the weather in Cincinnati. He covered the winter of '78. There's a picture of him in front of the frozen Ohio River."
Lee Fenwick said his brother was diagnosed with cancer fairly recently and survived a liver transplant in 2004. While recovering from the transplant, he got back into his old hobby of painting and drawing. He also was an avid traveler.
Other survivors include his parents, Robert Michael Fenwick Sr. and Joan Margaret Fenwick, and a sister, Kimberly Ann Bowling, all of Louisville, Ky. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to WFYI-FM.

John,

Have you considered doing some type of report on how to buy a high definition TV? Do you own one?

It's complicated out there!

It is very interesting, WB is getting very close to WXIX at 10. I wonder if they are nervous?

John, what's up with Lost?

To 11/28 6:55 am:
ABC still lists "Lost" as coming back in February, date and time to be announced, probably because of the writers strike. Fox has pulled "24" from its usual January launch, due to the writers strike. That's all I know. Maybe "Lost" fans who track the blogs might know more.

To me Channel 12 is the worst in the morning and at 11pm. In the morning A tired looking old guy, a deer in the headlights young chick and a strange guy doing the traffic. At night; no substance and anchors that at best are hard to look at. Go figure. Obviously I'm in the minority? Is it just the people that decide that are watching them? I don't understand.

star 64 is not even close to 19. 19 averages a 8.6 and 64 averages 2.1 how is that close?

kiese could 9's noon numbers be high due to the view.

If you switch to a station for their look you have issues, you should watch because the content and the writing. Besides, only their studio cameras are HD, the field cameras are not.

Its funny that someone would have such a pointed bash specifically at channel 12 in the morning and 11pm, when the station clearly dominates the airwaves. Channel 5 or 9 employee posting??

"Pointed bash?" Looks to me like they just said they don't get it - and they're certainly not the only one.

Ratings aren't the best way to measure audience response. Not an excuse from some TV employee, it's true. I happen to agree with the previous post, I have no clue how 12 can be "winning" the ratings war. Compared to what I have seen in other markets, their lineup really IS laughable, particularly in the mornings.

kiese can you post the results of sweeps in a grid.

Also could you post who won the sunday night sports talk shows.

Thanks

I agree that the morning lineup on channel 12 is laughable. I don't understand it either. 5, 19 and 9 are all better informed, entertaining, personable and professional. I don't know anyone that watches channel 12 in the morning. Who are these numbers people?

at 11/29/2007 9:13 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

"these numbers people" who are watching 12 are all 55 years old and higher.
wait for the demographics to come out and see what the breakdown is on who's actually watching. The demos are also the numbers that sales people use to sell ads.
the numbers are always enlightening.
households are about bragging rights.
demos are about money.
guess which one stations REALLY want to win?

I watch Channel 19 News because I can't stay up late any more, not to mention my wife goes to work early many mornings to life guard...

I am really tired of so many weather reports -- the 3 day forecast, the 7 day forecast, the 10 day forecast, the ohmygosh we may have snow flurries next Monday forecast. I really do not need to hear the weather so many times in one 60 minute period...

I also noticed in Pittsburgh this weekend that they use screen crawlers to deliver sports scores from the NBA, NHL, etc. and not just scores of local interest. Why don't we have those here???

A rant from Anderson. Go Redskins!!!

12 is dominating the airwaves? According to John's numbers, at the very best 12 is tied with 9 and may be in second. Hardly domination.

Hey ANON 9:13, Thank you for the real story. Now it makes sense. Hopefully John can show the real breakdown. I would think the younger professional people would be watching channel 5 in the morning. I would think they are the people that spend money and are attractive to advertisers. The channel 5 team seems to be more cutting edge and up to date than the others.

The channel 5 team was cutting edge back in 1984-92. Channel 5 up to date? How old are their set and gimmicks?

anon 2:17

I meant that the morning team on channel 5 was more cutting edge and up to date versus the other morning teams. The others all seem tired and boring. I agree that if they update the set, etc. it would complete the program and we would see a better total package. Again, it is obvious they have the better talent. Like someone said the over 55 crowd probably determines the numbers.

at 11/30/2007 10:36 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

IF the channel 5 team is more cutting edge, no offense to the talent, then why are the numebrs so low? They are in 4th place. They repeat stories and the writing if anyone is really paying attention is either sensational or inaacurate. Pete and Eric carry the show. I am sure though as previous posts have explained that they are content with their numbers because they are getting the younger viewers. Guess what? Younger viewers are not always tuning in to local news, hope all of the revenue helps their morale. They are not even competitive. Excuse me, they are with The Simpsons. Do you really believe people tune in to see a new set?????????????
