Now I can figure out why Dara Lind, a Yale junior from Symmes Township, never called me back to talk about her experience on the "Jeopardy!" college championship.
Lind, 20, a 2005 Sycamore High Schgool graduate, lost it all on "Jeopardy!" tonight.
She finished last with no money in the first round.
Lind incorrectly guessed that John Quincy Adams – not Theodore Roosevelt – was the youngest U.S. president to leave the White House in final Jeopardy.
The daughter of Joel and Sherry Lind of Symmes Township was in third place most of the night behind eventual winner Joey Beachum, 22, of Mississippi State University, and Andrew Chung, 20, of Harvey Mudd College in Claremont, Calif.
In the first round, Lind missed four of 10 questions to finish with negative $100. By the end of the second round she was up to $11,900 – but that was $7,900 behind Beachum. The two-week tourney ends May 16.
John It is kind of unnecessary to take a potshot at a girl just because she didn't call you back.

ReplyDeleteIt wasn't a potshot, but a fact. Every other local person who has been on Jeopdary! has done an interview with me to talk about the experience. The Jeopardy! PR folks were surprised too when I told them she never returned my calls, after they provided the phone number to me.

Just because every other local person who has been on Jeopardy! has done an interview with you to talk about the experience, doesn't obligate Ms. Lind to do the same thing.
ReplyDeleteYou are surmising that she didn't call you back becasue she lost it all.
It's possible she never called you back because she had more important things to do. Maybe she's caught up in studying. Maybe Jeopardy! was just a fun thing to do and there's no real story too it. Maybe her experience was typical of the other local contestants and she feels her story would have been boring, rehash.
Perhaps it wouldn't have seemed like a potshot if your article would have started with something like, "I would have liked to reported Dara's experiences, but she's never called to share them with me."
Your article -- while factual -- seemed unnecessarily mean. The girl was probably traumatized enough from the experience without having her hometown newspaper add to the misery. I felt really bad for her.
ReplyDeleteYale students are in the middle of finals right now, and that may be why Ms. Lind did not return your phone call.
The same thing happened to a Harvard student last night on Jeopardy as well.
I think Ms. Lind did well by making it onto the show in the first place.
John's ego keeps getting bigger, and his page views smaller.
