Hey, That's Jay!

If you're watching the "Today" show Thursday, keep an eye out for Jay Shatz, the Covington-based TV producer and former Channel 9 reporter.

Shatz, who produces the "Desperate Landscapes" yard make-over show for Scripps' DIY Network, will be watching four finalists from the "America’s Most Desperate Landscape" contest compete on a Rockefeller Plaza obstacle course. (He thinks it will be in the 8:30 a.m. half-hour.) The four contestants are from Wayne, Penn.; Miami, Fla.; Fontana, Calif.; and Ohio’s Sagamore Hills Township, near Akron.

The winner receives a free yard makeover from "Desperate Landscapes," DIY's top-rated series. On June 5, "Today” will broadcast from the winner's beautiful new yard. Then Shatz will produce a one-hour "Desperate Landscapes" speical for DIY about the transformation of the winner's property. For more info about the series – which has been shot mostly in Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky – go to

What a promotional coup for Shatz and his JayTV shop in Covington. Two live shots on TV’s No. 1 morning show! Way to go, Jay!

  1. Good for you, Jay. Came to Cincinnati with a lot of good ideas, fresh, got others to listen to you, and you went on channel 9 with new stuff. Gotta hand it to you, success came easy to you, hold on to it.

  2. I wish Jay's old show would return to the airwaves of brrrrrrrrring channel 9. Much better programming than seeing an old Jack LaLaine juicer being hawked.

  3. From a fellow University of Illinois alumnus, I say "Congratulations!" Jay.

I have enjoyed "Desperate Landscapes" on DYI. I'm sure (almost) every neighborhood has that one house lacking decent landscaping that all the neighbors grumble about, so Jay's show should last a long time.

The show is produced in a way that the "bad" neighbors are treated gently and the outcomes are usually outstanding.

Good luck and best wishes for much future success, Jay.

  4. Those cheering Jay Shatz don't know him very well. Ask some of his co-workers about his attitudes. Here's a hint: the name "JayTV" isn't exactly modest and unassuming, is it?
