Another ABC reality show in town

Another day, another ABC reality show in town. This is crazy.
“Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” knocked on the door of a home in Sunrise, Ky., about 50 miles south of Cincinnati in Harrison County (south of Falmouth), early Thursday morning. They will tear down the house Saturday, and rebuild a new one by next Thursday. John Henry Homes of Blue Ash is part of the project.
It’s the third ABC show to film here in two weeks, and the sixth ABC reality series to be involved with Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky in a three-week span!
--“Supernanny” is taping at an Erlanger home this week. See my story today:
http://news.cincinnati.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060309/LIFE03/603090339/-1/CINCI
--“Wife Swap” filmed a Mason woman last week as a prospective candidate for that show.
--On Monday, ABC’s “Miracle Workers” premiere featured Dr. Edward Holland of Union, who works at the Cincinnati Eye Institute satellite office in Edgewood.
--Doug Hall, the Newtown-based marketing guru and author, will be one of four judges on ABC’s “American Inventor” series – produced by “American Idol” judge Simon Cowell – premiering next Thursday on ABC (8 p.m., Ch 9).
--“Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” on March 19 will show Ficks Reed, a Blue Ash furniture maker, donating bedroom suites, a dining room set and other items to a Florida family whose home was damaged by a hurricane.
I guess I shouldn’t be surprised ABC has discovered Cincinnati, after seeing CBS’ big ratings for “Survivor” and “The Amazing Race.”

Everyday Freedom Heroes
You can watch a wonderfully inspiring special today about people who have made a difference, “Everyday Freedom Heroes” (9 p.m., Ch 9). Too bad the rest of the world can’t see it (yet).
Local producer Jim Friedman has profiled the seven activists honored by the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center in January. Among the seven is Madeira resident and former Haitian slave Jean-Robert Cadet. The others are peace, justice, racial equality and social services activists in New York, Los Angeles, Memphis and Palm Beach County, Fla.
Friedman told me months ago he hoped a national cable channel would pick up the show. But so far the only commitment is from a Tampa station.

Kiese-watching
You won’t see meteorologist Kristen Cornett anymore on WLWT-TV, but you may see her on NBC’s Weather Plus channel on Time Warner cable. She’s now working in New York for NBC’s Weather Plus.

Thanks
Thanks for the comments about "Sons & Daughters." Keep 'em coming.

You don't need Time Warner (or any other cable company) to see Kristen Cornet on NBC Weather Plus. NBC Weather Plus is available free over the air to everyone.

I'd really NOT like to see Jim O'Brian on Channel 5 weather any longer. His high-pitched, piercing voice is the most annoying sound on TV. And he's on the air too many times each 1/2 hour with teases and promos. He's the reason we switched back to the no-nonsense presentation on Channel 9.

We don't need 6 reminders every half-hour that it's not raining. And we don't need the BOGUS 5 radars to show us it is raining.

Funny, the only time it snowed this winter, Channel 5 and it's "power of 5" radars MISSED IT.

Come on now.. give Jim a break. You know the whole "Power of 5" think is a branding gimmick just like the Doppler 5000's and Super Duper Dopplers that you hear all of the time. The meteorologists (at a lot of stations) think the branding thing is just as corny as the viewers do...they are just doing what they are told. It's part of the job...not his fault.

Between the uber-doppler-nonsense and now the horrific graphics and presentation of the traffic on 5 and 12, local TV is becoming less and less watchable. Even though 19 is amateur hour most of the time, at least the weather and traffic presentations are straight forward (and that Valerie Abati, hubba hubba)

And anyone else notice the almost complete absence of Dave Wagner in any News5 promos? I assume he's slowly stocking up on station office supplies before he's shown the door.

Amen to Valerie Abati and check Dave Wagner's trunk for missing toilet paper.

Speaking of the amateur hour on 19, who will replace Dan Hoard?

My guess (thinking pocketbook) is they'll move up someone from within, like Dan Carroll or that producer kid you see sometimes on weekends. There's also Betsy Ross hovering in the background doing her own consulting business. But she's not bald, which seem to be one of the job requirements for 19Sports.

Oh yeah! It's been a good week to watch Fox19 news in the morning. Valerie is the bomb!

Watch news on TIVO and you can skip over all the barametric pressure systems and worthless info and skip straight to the extended forcast or just get if off the internet.

"This is Dave Wagner, Fox19 Sports"

Triva:
Do you know why Channel 12 calls their 5-day forecast the "planning forecast"?

It was decided years ago that they would not use the digit "5" on the weather forecast. thinking that the sight of that number might have you flipping down the dial to WLWT.

Back before they were owned by the same company, WLW Radio was the same way to 55KRC. The temperature was never 55 on WLW, always 54 or 56.

It's good to see the big networks coming into Cincinnati to do some filming. Hopefully there will be more in the future. They ought to tape an American Idol audition here.

I'm disappointed to see Kristen Cornett leave. I must say I feel very sorry for John Bateman for having to work that nasty double weekend shift.

Did anyone catch Juliette Vara anchoring at noon on channel 5 yesterday? I have to say she did a very excellent job - I'd like to see her come back to anchor more often.

You probably will see her more. Yesterday was her 3rd time ever anchoring...and I have to say, she does and excellent job.

As far as John Bateman...that suicide shift is killer but having Mon-Fri off is very sweet. I'm sure he is enjoying that!

at 3/10/2006 2:18 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

as for mon-fri off i dont think so he still has other duties and obligations to the station ie tours of the weather center and so forth plus thats one thing bateman and cornett do/did and take care of weather details and fill in its all in a contract to fillins or whatever and when ever they are in need

Wow... I didn't know you were Brennan Donnellan!

Trust me...I know his situation. Yes he does have M-F off and after a killer shift like that he deserves it.

By the way....to clarify the above, this is only while they look for a new meteorologist. NORMALLY...he does do school talks, station tours, etc etc, just like the other meteorologists on staff do. He just gets the 5 days off while he is working that schedule.

Returning to the Valerie Abati conversation, how's about the Greater Cincinnati Hubba Hubba News Team:
Anchor: Tanya O'Rourke
Anchor: Tricia Macke
Reporter: Anna Townsend
Reporter: Denise Johnson
Reporter: Denae D'Arcy
Reporter: Sandra Ali
Sports: ummm...well...Katherine Nero will have to fill in
Weather: Valerie Abati

i was ititated sunday night watching sorry trying to watch extreme makover home edition an it seemed to me every 5 seconds from chief meteorologist steve raleigh and the 9 forecasters AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHH sorry had to scream the ran that for forever during the program but i noticed one thing they didnt run it during commercials my ? is do they value our lives only during the show or are thet afraid to show it during the commercials and upset the advertisers

I would agree with O'brien and his skills. WLWT needs to kill the overhyped weather. And...keep someone who atleast doesn't sound like Elmer Fudd or look like they belong selling cars.

5 & 9 need to take a chill in one collective regards: when there is a weather watch issued early on a Sunday, to be in effect Monday evening, doesn't mean you need to key a map taking up 1/6th of the screen ALL DAY Sunday and Monday! Use some common sense! At least 5 isn't screaming "BLIZZARD".

It all comes full circle as I look at my Borgman print depicting Cincinnati weather forecasters: "We're All Gonna Die!"

I enjoy watching Rob Williams scratch his head, rub his nose, wipe his forehead, play with his shoe and then stick his hand in the food before he misses his mouth with it.

I neglected to mentiopn Rob Williams reaming his ear with his little finger. that must be the appetizer before the food.

Add to the list of local TV bimbos - Kit 'Puseyes' Andrews, Carol 'fifty pound prune' Williams, and Jeno Wattin, who can't even pronounce her name. And they all say tempicher and Wensdy.
