On hiatus

Wanted you to know that you won't be seeing any new postings for a couple of weeks. I'm headed into the hospital to have some plumbing fixed. Basically, I'll go in with a ":" and come home with a ";"
Yes, that means more time to watch TV... which to me, kinda sounds like work...

Maybe if I watch Channel 5's 7 a.m. news Saturday they'll do a better job with George Vogel's taped sports segment. During his report last Saturday, the ticker below him reported that the late Friday NCAA tournament game was at half-time. At the half at 7:25 Saturday morning??
And another observation about the NCAA games: Since Duke has been knocked out of the tourney, can those Chevy commercials with Coach K be knocked off the air too?

Of course, the fun part of my job are the pleasant surprises -- like the references on "The West Wing" last Sunday to Cincinnati, WKRC, The Enquirer and Graeter's Ice Cream. So what if the ice cream (and too much Halloween candy) made the little boy barf...

Thanks for checking out my blog.
I'll blog when I get back.

Enjoy your column...hope your plumber does a successful job.

It has been reported that WCVG a former all Elvis radio station with a current gospel format is changing its format again.
Word is that it will become an all Bob Huggins station.... 24/7.

To defeat the 5 second delay on TimeWarner, see if this works:

Don't use your digital tuner.

Split the cable and feed one side into a VCR.

Feed the other side into your digital tuner.

In Picture-n-Picture, you'll discover the time delay.

During the severe weather Sunday night, I watched channel 5 on both. The analog (VCR) version was 5 seconds ahead of the digital box version.

Warner should just drop the digitizing the channels under 99. All it does is freeze up and stutter.

It makes watching sporting events useless when you WANT AND NEED to mute the television announcers and listen to the radio side of things.

Case in point: ESPN Thursday night games with Sterling Sharpe, who would refer to certain teams as "my team" or "my boys". Go to listen on the radio and watch it...unusable.

Bundle this! lol

Kristen Cornett looked great on MSNBC. Way to go WLWT! The replacement or was it on-the-air audition was horrible. S-L-O-W announcer.

Why not get Tom Sussi? He does everything else.

dave wagner and derek beasley were perfect together.

well at least news5 doesn't have that fat meteroligst dennis joe bob bailey doing weather. he was horrible at knowing when to look and he couldn't move.
he was in a standstill the whole time he did the weather!!!

the copter is back, but if you watched channel 5 last night they said its first story was covering the storm damage and no there was no parade copter coverage

Due to the President's visit, SKY 5 was unable to fly with the flight restrictions. It was able to get up and shoot the storm damage in Boone County before having to land due to high winds in the area.

The TV gods advised me that the new CW network will be pay tv.
That's right. The only way to get the new CW this fall is to have digital cable, buy a digital converter box for a couple hundred bucks, or if you are lucky enough to have a new 42" plasma tv with ATSC tuner you'll get the CW network over the air on WXIX's digital channel, but not in HD. This stink!

They ARE the best weather team, with updates, and traffic pulse.

Oh, please...
Weather reporting continues to get more obnoxious by the day...
It is SO out of control. Each rainstorm brings warning of impending Apocylypse....
I am just so weary of it all.
The advent of the 24/7, 1000 channel news cycle has merely wrought the most egregious forms of hyperbole. Like the little boy who cried "wolf!", the utterings on the newscasts mean very little anymore.
It is a sad state of affairs...

Everyone did a good job with the storms...people got the information they need. Whether it was 5, 12, 19, or 9...who gives a flip?

at 4/10/2006 10:43 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

I had to flip away from both 5 and 9 during the storm...Raleigh & O'Brien are just computer happy and they were clicking their little mouse so fast, I was getting motion sickness. Especially Raleigh..he's not good with all his toys and should let someone else run the computer for him. It was awful! 12 did a much better job.

Well friday Jim O Brien proved why he is the tristates severe weather leader. Derek and John also did a great job. Derek must have been tired because he worked from 5am till 645pm.

Which eleven pm newcast do you watch and why?

at 4/10/2006 12:35 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Well I watch NEWS 5 because they have more live reports and the anchors are young. Kit and Rob must be like 60 ! kit looks 60 but rob looks 50. Local 12 is just so bland. I can feel the engery from Sandra, Sheree, Jim, and Ken.

WCPO was horrible. Vacillation overload. And since when did the word "hail" become 2 syllables? or pronounced "hell"?

WLWT: Of what I saw, was WCPO-lite. Too much clicking on the ole computers.

Remember when all a station had was a radar image? If it's not earth shattering, stay off the air.

My favorite blunder: WCPO saying how "there's a tornado at Finneytown High School". Wrong! Guess there were too many of those "beer-can" images on the screen, Steverino.

And applause to Cammy for chastizing Steve Horstmeyer for trying to pry up a piece of imbedded plexiglass. Dude, don't lose another finger!

Just saw that Juliette Vara is gone from Channel 5 in june looks llike her contract is up and either she or news5 have decided not to renew.......Checkout medialine.com and search and you will see she is job hunting

at 4/11/2006 7:52 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

I find it hard to believe that they wouldn't renew her.. she is one of the best reporters News 5 has. I think it is more so that she wants to search for something else. Being a reporter in Cincinnati can get depressing...lately it seems like there is hardly anything positive to report on lately.

at 4/12/2006 11:28 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Let me get this correct: WLWT wants to dump Juliette Vara but keep Bina Roy? And whatever happened to Raegan Butler?

Is WLWT a dumping ground or ladder wrung? So sad...they used to have an incredible newsteam, pre-Tolan days.

Sad.

at 4/12/2006 12:12 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yeah i dont know why news5 would keep bina roy and get rid of juliette. Juliettte did a great job as a noon anchor a few times. Does anyone know what happened to amy wagner. I contacted news 5 to tell them to update the website. They did, but Amy is on there still.

Anybody know what Ch 5 is going to do about a permanent weekend morning meteorologist?

Also-Last I saw, Ch. 5 was still airing commercials with Kristen Cornett in them, standing next to John, Jim, and Derek. Kristen has been gone since late February! Think they would remove those commericals by now......

someone is shot in front of city hall during a city council meeting and you think the coverage is too much? are you nuts? i had cpo on and despite all their breathless reporting, i had plenty of unanswered questions... i think it's being underreported -- or perhaps you want more 'myspace will kill your children and molest their dead bodies while selling your grandmother worthless real estate' stories

at 4/13/2006 12:12 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

I just think that if the news covered every shooting in the city they would be on for atleast an hour straight. Downtown cincy is becoming detroit and that is not good at all.

at 4/13/2006 12:18 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Everybody is leaving the city to move out to the suburbs because of all the shootings. I would never go on vine street in my life. Or in fact over the rhine. I do not want my life threatened. That why I live in Hyde Park.

at 4/13/2006 12:20 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Did any one see local 12s coverage of the shooting. How many minutes was it. For news 5 at 11 it was around 8 minutes. Yes I agree that a shooting around city hall is a top story, but I am sure there are other shootings in the 2nd most violent city.

True enough... but Hyde Park is supposedly once of the "nicer" areas of Cincinnati right? You expect to see utter mayhem and murder in Over-The-Rhine.

No one incident doesn't make a place UNSAFE persay, I think what the above poster was saying is that No part of the city is truly safe. Except Indian Hill possibly.

awesome question any one got the answer?

at 4/17/2006 6:04 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Having been in the business here in town, I know most weekend crews are considered the "C" team at each station. The best part though, the weekend shows typically pull in higher ratings and are often times the most successful show for some of the stations. The so-called "C" teams work harder, do more shows and have more airtime than those during the week... and they always get paid less... but it's like that everywhere i assume... c'est la vie!

The "B" Teams = Weekday Mornings
The "A" Teams = 11pm Shows

at 4/18/2006 10:57 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

That whole "B" and "A" thing is open for interpretation, to be sure...

Channel 5 has postedthe biography of the newest weather person so here it is

Marina Jurica joined WLWT in April 2006. Prior to that she was at WKYT in Lexington, Ky., and has worked at KMIR in Palm Springs and Channel One News in Los Angeles.

Growing up in Vancouver and California, Marina graduated from UCLA where she studied opera performance, journalism, and astronomy and is near completion of a BS in geosciences from Mississippi State University. A first generation American, Marina is very proud of her Croatian heritage and is fluent in both Croatian and French.

When she's not following her passion for weather, she enjoys snow skiing, surfing, and singing whenever she can. Her husband, Joseph, is completing his cardiology fellowship at the University of Kentucky. Her brother is studying at Fresno State University, and her sister at UC Berkley. Marina is very excited to join the WLWT family and looks forward to making Cincinnati her home.

I am really wondering these days if people really give a crap whether weather talent have the degree or not?

Yeah... if you have a situation like the Blue Ash tornado, would you want a NON-meteorologist telling you where they think the storm is going?

They'll end up getting you killed by not knowing what they heck they are talking about.

And I still havent caught sight of either John Amos or our pal Dan Von Bargen( Two of the Joint chiefs over the years. Looking forward to your blogs again as soon as you're back up to speed.

Deal affects local TV lineups
BY CLIFF PEALE | ENQUIRER STAFF WRITER
The digital-spectrum television channel operated by WKRC-TV (Channel 12) will be the Cincinnati home for the new CW Network.

Operators of the network, a combination of the WB and UPN, on Wednesday named affiliates in Cincinnati, Salt Lake City and Little Rock, Ark. The change will take effect in September. While that limits coverage here to digital customers, WKRC officials said they would work with cable companies to maximize the coverage. The change means:

WSTR-TV (Channel 64), the current home of WB in this market, will become the affiliate for the new My Network TV started by the Fox Network, general manager Jon Lawhead said. He was unsure about marketing or prime-time content.

"There are a lot more questions than answers at this point," he said.

WBQC-TV (Channel 38), the current UPN affiliate, will go independent, owner Elliott Block said.

WKRC-DT will fill about one-third of its programming from the new CW and create the remainder itself on digital channel 12.2, general manager Chris Sehring said. The local content will include those shows already produced by the station, he said.

"We're going to set out to build a separate television station," Sehring said. "Our mission will be to try and find a way so as many people can see it as possible."

CBS Corp. and Warner Bros. Entertainment announced the CW network in January.

Hey Rick not all anonymous are the same. as for the one who said the new weather person is not a meteorologist WRONG looked her up on the net and she IS a meterologist and she actually has a fan club on yahoo so check before you put in your half a penny

Thanks, good-Anonymous! I try not to get you Anonymae confused... (Hey, I made up a word!)

at 4/21/2006 3:15 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Wrong.. the new weatherperson on 5 is NOT a meteorologist. She does NOT have a degree in meteorology and she does NOT have an AMS or NWA seal. Until she does... she is just a weatherperson. She is nearing completion of a BS degree in Geosciences from Mississippi State...which is NOT a meteorology degree.

So having a fansite makes her a meteorologist?? LOL.

at 4/21/2006 7:33 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Then again....who cares about credentials these days. Television (especially TV weather in non-weather intensive markets like Cincinnati) is all about how good you look. That's about 3/4 of what gets people to watch.

the whole trafficpulse thing is extremely annoying" someone could just show the artimis cams and be done with it. a non-renewal of juliette is tragic, but channel 5 does not keep most around for more than 5 years. they know what they're doing with sandra and sheree however. the whole kabaka oba interupption was absolutely crazy on channel 5. the questions asked were already answered, the speculation was wrong, and they dragged it out to get a bigger 5 pm audience....

Terry Daniels (aka Terry Thill) is primary anchor at WTOL in Toledo. Teri Barr is an anchor at WISC in Madison. Elena Echarri was at WPLG in Miami as a reporter, but she has sense gone under the radar again.

What's the channelcincinnati.com 'scandal' with Regan Butler?

at 4/22/2006 10:57 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

All this sniping about weatherpersons, forcasters or whatever brings to mind a couple of 'scandals' from way back. Seems to be during one of the really bad winters, veteran weatherman Tony Sands was let go for over predicting the amount of snow coming, and as it turned out he was working for a company that sold snow blowers. And Pat Barry was reprimanded for sounding a storm alarm once too often. Dont know if either were meteorologists. And of course there is the sad case of our resident fire-bug, Eric Warren

look at dave fraser who was fired from channel 5 for not declaring a few inches of snow a blizzard . oh and by the way hawgood introduced their newest METEOROLOGIST this morning

Hey, How about a different spin on things? After reading about all the likes and dislikes lets say that channel 38 were to become an all news station and the other channels in town were to not do any news at all and all the current news people all went to channel 38 how would you schedule the people to work the shifts that go 8 hours at a shot starting at 6 am who would work when and who would keep and get rid of and who would you try to bring in to work

Can't wait to see all of the former channel 64 air talent on CHANNEL 64's new Tall 12 News at 10.

One question: Tape or Live. The Weather Authority taped will suffer, especially with severe weather.

The new WSTR newscast will be live according to the WKRC press release on their website. It also says the name of the newscast and talent line-up haven't been released yet, so I'm not sure where you're getting the name or why you're assuming all the old WSTR talent will be on it.

If you think the salaries for a local news anchor/meteorologist/reporter is that low, you are sadly mistaken. Having worked here locally, I know that an anchor like Clyde Gray is easily bringing home $250,000+... and I would assume much more. Kit & Rob I would assume are pulling in nearly $500,000+... I know for a fact that Jerry Springer & Norma were both making well over a half million when they were #1... and a chief meteorologist is making at least $150,000... as a reporter they probally make about $50-$75,000.. depending on their experience and contract negotiations... But the so-called "Main Anchors" at most of the stations here are making a large sum of dough.... but it really just depends on what station you work at. The other people who aren't the main guys are making much less... depending. Most of these guys make a large amount of money to just sit and read out loud... but that's the nature of the business.

if i remember correctly but dont quote me on it norma rashid made 250,000 a year when 5 was on top but she had a huge clothing allowance

do the stations give the on air personality a clothing allowance. If so how much. is it given to them each month?

Hi, gang! Wow. Kiese reaaally needs to come back soon - all these random posts jammed under one heading is getting kinda nuts!

Guess I ought to address the person who threw out the ol' "TrafficPulse is annoying" comment. You obviously pay a lot of attention to what's going on in local TV, don't you? Maybe you haven't noticed, but since we introduced Real-Time TrafficPulse, I guess it's just pure coincidence that nearly EVERY other station in the market has come up with their own incarnation of what we debuted last fall. Ever since we started using 3-D maps, fly-throughs and SkyView maps, everyone else has been struggling to keep up.

Channel 12 has Bobby Herzog - who bounces out to the "big maps." Channel 9 has spiced things up significantly. Currently, 19 is the only station still choosing to "...show the artimis cams and be done with it."

Traffic is a big deal in Cincinnati. Even though we're not one of the largest markets - we are consistently rated as having some of THE worst congestion in the U.S. The market demands pertinent, useful information regarding the daily commute. And I'd say that's just what we do every day.

So - annoying or not - we started the trend here in Cincinnati. And imitation *is* the sincerest form of flattery. That said, by all means - you can continue to trash TrafficPulse if you want. I, for one, certainly do enjoy all the free publicity. Almost as much as I enjoy reading anonymous posts from uninformed, ignorant TV "insiders" such as yourself.

Get well, Kiese! Hope to see you back on here soon!

So when is WLWT going to raid the talents of WCPO? I could see a Hawthorne/Walton newscast.

And then I'd wake up in a cold, cold sweat.

at 4/25/2006 12:39 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

at least that Pete guy is man enough to put his name out there and not have to hide behind an anonymous name like the rest of us.

at 4/25/2006 1:34 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

are you sure that that is pete scalia? all it does is take you to channel 5s web site which does not mean a thing.

I like the traffic pulse a lot better than any other news stations traffic coverage. I watch news5 today then local 12 at noon then channel 9 from 5-630. Then I tivo local 12 at 11.

HEY EVERYBODY SHOULD LEAVE A REASON WHY YOU WATCH THE NEWSCAST YOU WATCH.

SWEEPS ARE STARTING ON THURSDAY. I HAVE A QUESTION. WHAT IF I HAVE 3 TVS AND EACH ONE OF THEM IS TUNED INTO DIFFERENT LOCAL NEWSCAST WHAT RATING DOES THAT DELIVER

at 4/25/2006 3:30 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

i just think that trafficpulse is just a little bit confusing, and it might be easier if there was more time to see the maps...i didn't mean that pete or the maps themselves were annoying. i should have explained more. sorry!

at 4/25/2006 3:51 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

I like the traffic pulse also I think that there needs to be more 3-d views of the roads. Other than that KEEP UP THE OUTSTANDING JOB PETE

I agree about waiting for 200 posts. On the subject of long gone people on the news, does anybody remember Zip Rzeppa or Mitzi Oxford
(she did the weather on channel 12 when Ira Joe Fisher left. How about Glenn(Skipper) Ryle? And by the by, I knew you when,John London, but I promise I won't mention your name unless you want me too.... just remember the good old days as Sunset Park!

Who could forget Glenn the skipper Ryle and especially his bowling for dollars

Since someone entioned Zip and anchors salary this will kill 2 birds with one stone zip is now the executive director of St.Vincent DePaul in St.Louis and if you read the article it averages about $250,000 a year

St. Louis, MO, TV station KMOV-TV removed Zip Rzeppa as its sports director after the latter decided not to renew his contract with the station. The popular Rzeppa had transferred from KTVI to KMOV in 1988, signing a five-year contract with the latter for $1.5 million. However, his presence did not boost KMOV's ratings, as the station had hoped when it signed him on. Rzeppa will remain at the station hosting the Zippo Awards.

Industry sources say Zip Rzeppa's television career is a microcosm of a very fickle business - a window on the world of money, marketing and pressure.
