CET Looking for 1937 Flood Stories

To celebrate the 70th anniversary of the great 1937 flood, CET will repeat Dan Hurley's "The 1937 Flood: A Look Back" and ask viewers for their stories and photos about the flood to post on www.CETconnect.org.
The deadline for submitting photos, or interviews on video or paper, and other materials is Jan. 8. They will not be part of the "1937 Flood" documentary on Jan. 19 (9 p.m., Channel 48), which is a repeat from years ago. Thousands were left homeless when the Ohio River crested at 79.9 feet on Jan. 26 that year.
For details go to http://www.cetconnect.org/content/37flood.asp
Questions about the project should be directed to Amanda Carnes at the station at amanda_carnes@wcet.pbs.org, or 513-345-6566.

TV tonight
The "Christmas Tech" special on “Modern Marvels today (10 p.m., History Channel) features the California home of Mike Ziemkowski, the guy who designed the Cincinnati Zoo’s new synchronized Wild Lights Show. Zoo employees had seen his elaborate display last year, and asked him to design a show for the Wings of Wonder amphitheater. The Zoo's display is not shown on the TV special.

Radio Christmas Music
I've found the local Christmas music offerings have too short a playlist. Do they get a better rate if they play 15 songs over and over rather than a real assortment?
Luckily, In the northern suburbs WMKV (89.3) is playing a very diverse set of holiday music. Some songs may repeat, but I've not heard many repeats of the same performance. Very refreshing. Are any other stations playing a good variety of holiday music?

Kiese-

You've been in this town a long time...I know Jim Scott keeps talking about his home in upstate NY, BUT there is is a story in Cincinnati lore that keeps coming to the surface. The story is Jim is the product of an affair between a young (OK, younger) Ruth Lyons and a new weatherman (at the time) by name of Tony Sands.

Tell me that I'm the only person who has heard that one......

at 12/21/2006 2:44 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Hey 12:31 Anon....

I think you hold the answer to the never-ending parade of Channel 5 weathermen/women.

Maybe old Tony and Ruth did do the Big Nasty in one of the closets at the Comex building.

And perhaps Tony's refusal to runaway with Miss Lyons, led her to leave a curse on the Channel 5 weather department. Afterall, she was a powerful woman in broadcasting in her day.

SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT!!!!!

Now, what's it going to take to end the curse.

Contrary to popular belief, former 700-WLW sports talk radio host Andy Furman will not be retiring or starting a new career selling cars. The rumors circulating in local media circles about Furman finding a home at Cincinnati's new FM talk station have now come to fruition.

Beginning Jan. 8, "Prime Time Sports with Andy Furman" will be heard live and local from 4-7 p.m. on WFTK-FM "Supertalk FM 96.5."

Furman's early shows will likely include interviews with major local and national celebrities including Pete Rose, Sparky Anderson, Jim Tressel, Mark Dantonio, Bob Huggins, Bob Knight, Oscar Robertson and Nick Lachey. Furman would like to interview Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh, with whom he had a very public feud, in order to put past differences behind them.

Furman, 56, had been suspended without pay on Oct.13 for calling Houshmandzadeh a "racist" during his 700-WLW-AM "Sports Talk" show on Oct. 6. Leading up to his suspension, Furman had criticized Houshmandzadeh for the previous two nights for failing to show up at a live call-in show, for which he was under a paid contract by WLW to appear each week during the Bengals' season.

Whether listeners loved or hated him, Furman's success at 700-WLW was proven by his high ratings. Over the past 15 years, Furman's 6-9 p.m. program had a No. 1 ranking 45 times in the last 59 ratings books, with the men 25-54 demographic.

During the other 14 rating periods, his show was ranked No. 2 with this key demographic. It must be noted that the Arbitron ratings books do not differentiate "Sports Talk" programming and ratings for Cincinnati Reds baseball.

Cumulus Media Partners, owner of Supertalk FM 96.5, strategically positioned Furman in the 4-7 p.m. afternoon drive to go head-to-head with two hours of Gary Burbank and one hour of Sports Talk on WLW. Furman will also directly compete against two other popular sports talk hosts: Lance McCalister on 1530-Homer and the duo of Wayne "Box" Miller and Eric "E.T." Thomas on 1230 AM "The Buzz."

Burbank's show is the ratings leader in the time period, but his show has been declining in popularity for the past 10 years.

i wanna know why people aren't bashing gary burbank for his ratings keep on sliding. Oh i remember kiese is a guest on burbank every monday.
Folks you will not see a negative article about gary burbank at all as long as kiese is the moderator. My sources at the big one tell me kiese gets a hefty bonus for appering on burbank

at 12/21/2006 10:03 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

burbank and cc lost me when they changed his and mcconnels shifts around for his syndication and his show just hasnt been the same since especially since doc wolfe left

at 12/22/2006 6:48 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Burbank is burned out. He hasn't been funny since the early 80's.

Lance McAlister spends too much time talking about himself and his kid. We don't care. Talk sports please, not what you watched on TV last night.

The BUZZ isn't a factor, period.

Cumulus has done well positioning Furman where they did. Let's hope this is only the beginning of more local programming and the return of REAL Radio, not the Clear Channel version

Also, I have a radio question. I'm sure these are celebrity names and not their given names, but are Brian Douglas from Q102 and Randi Douglas from WARM98 related?

Interesting note about the "independent" research saying channel 9 has the most accurate forecast. I wondered who paid for it (because i'm sure WeatheRate isn't doing this research out of the goodness of their hearts). From WeatheRate's website:

Can you tell me more about your certification and licensing process?

Since March 2003, WeatheRate has been verifying TV weather forecast accuracy for 300 stations in 75 U.S. cities every day. The most accurate station in each TV market is offered the opportunity to license the WeatheRate seal of approval for advertising and promotional purposes.

Stations that promote their WeatheRate seal of approval pay us a fee.

So how independent can that really be?

at 12/22/2006 1:38 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Another interesting tidbit about WeatheRate from its website (weatherate.com):

Before starting WeatheRate, our company president was often wrong at work … yet he wasn't fired.
How could this be? Simple. Bruce was a meteorologist; he forecasted weather for television, radio, newspapers, trucking companies and government agencies. "It was the only job in my life where I could be wrong over and over without getting fired," says Bruce.

So, the founder of this company appears to be admitting he wasn't very good at his job as a meteorologist, so he starts a company to judge the accuracy of weather forecasting????

Sounds like he found yet another way to make money, possibly still be wrong, and yet, not get fired.

at 12/22/2006 2:05 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

12 was offered the "WeatherRate" deal before 9 was and was unwilling to pay the huge amount of money they wanted for the rating, so a few months later WeatherRate offered it to 9. This has happened in many other markets too.

Tracey Johnson is anchoring WXIX's Ten O'Clock News tonight.

I think she was a weather anchor at WCPO in the early 1990s. She replaced Todd Hunter back when Brian Patrick did the weather and Bob Alan were at Channel 9.

Someone also mentioned in another thread that WKRC-TV changed their website address from "www.wkrc.com" to "www.local12.com". Could this be in preparation for a call letter change when Clear Channel sells their TV stations?

Tracey Johnson Hardwick '87
Major: Communications
Occupation: News Anchor for TXCN, Dallas Texas

When Tracey reflects on the Lord's leading and direction in her life, she is filled with gratitude to Him for guiding her just at the right moment. That began with her family's decision to attend an Assemblies of God church in Cincinnati, OH while she was a teenager. She is so grateful to her mom and dad for providing the spiritual foundation that was vital to her life and for their obedience to His calling upon her family. Soon thereafter, Tracey explored college options, which led her to the Evangel campus. Tracey shares that, "As soon as I stepped on campus, I knew that Evangel was the place for me."

It was during her first Spiritual Emphasis Week at Evangel that Tracey had a grounding experience. She and the student body were challenged to st and for Jesus in whatever career path He led. Tracey embraced that challenge.

It wasn't long until Tracey's broadcasting talents came to light. Just when she was searching for vocational direction, she was asked by one of her professors to be in a pilot tape promoting Evangel. From there, her broadcasting career has blossomed.

Running concurrently with her career is her husband's, Kirk, whom Tracey describes as her best friend. Kirk and Tracey met at Evangel. His career as an executive with Sam's Club had necessitated several career moves, including a 2-year stint in Puerto Rico where Kirk was Country Director. With each move, the Lord has opened a door for Tracey as a broadcaster.

After graduation, Tracey's first reporting opportunity came with WQAD in Moline, IL as a consumer reporter. Other positions were offered to her upon moves to Cincinnati, OH with WCPO as a weather anchor; Fayetteville, AR as a news anchor with KHOG; Shreveport, LA at KTBS as a news/weather anchor; and currently in Dallas, TX at TXCN as a news anchor.

Tracey feels that the individual attention and hands-on opportunities she received at Evangel were instrumental in helping her to succeed in the competitive field of broadcasting. She holds fast to Joshua 1: 8-9, knowing that the Lord prospers those who do that which He commands.

Tracey and Kirk now reside in Dallas, TX where Kirk has opened up his own sales/marketing company. They have twin boys, Luke and Landon, who are 4 years old and a daughter, Lacey Lynn, who is 3. Tracey says she is happiest while doing anything with her best friends...her family.

I think it's interesting that all of the main people on 19's Ten O'Clock News last night, are not actual employees of FOX-19!!!

Tracey J -- just filling in/free-lancing

Pat Berry -- just filling in until 19 gets a Chief Meteorlogist

Betsy Ross -- has been free-lancing forever!!

What does this say about their 'valued' employees and loyalty to the station!?!?!?

At least Cammy Dierking was working all last night on Christmas Day! She might be annoying, but she doesn't mind coming in on Christmas...

Jim Scott was spotted eating Doritos at lunch yesterday. This is a problem.

at 12/27/2006 8:51 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Jim Scott issue:

It's no secret that programming doesn't matter to Clear Channel. Just listen to the content Scott puts forth every morning:
canned interviews repeated every 90 minutes.
Rich Walburg entertainment minute, a total waste of air time.
cross plugging other WLW shows with taped drop-ins from those programs.

THAT ISN'T WHAT SCOTT WANTS TO BE DOING.

He sounds burned out and grumpy because all his creativity has been taken away.

There's no flow..he could call in his drops from home.

Clear Channel only keeps him on because he's the only "MONEY MACHINE" they have bringing in ad revenue. Take away his cash flow and there would be 19 more heads chopped before you could pull a Grippos bag from your pocket.

PS...has anyone besides scott read the Crosley Brothers book (twice) as Scott suggests in one ad.

I agree with the above poster. Jonathan Hawgood is too smug. I liked Moeley's performance. Seems very trustworthy. I also watch their traffic guy on the website - he anchors their "fast cast" thing every day, but does he ever anchor on the air?

Pat Barry? Wow.

Wow, it is the worst three at 12. They all should be gone in my opinion. Anna Townsend talks too quickly, Dayna is just annoying with her wigs, and Cammy, well, too much too mention, but she thinks her stuff doesn't stink and she should be forbidden from singing.

I love that Jonathan Hawgood..but why do all the female weather people seem to want to get away from him? I heard a rumour that Suzanne Horgan just couldn't stand him. That Kristin Cornett wanted out too, and now Marina. What gives? Is Jonathan too friendly? I've seen him with John Bateman and they are a great team.

I don't care for that cold fish Sandra Ali. When she came to town she talked of how aggressive she was, and what has she done? She went to New York to interview NBC primetime stars and that's about it. No hard hitting reporting from her. She seems to content to sit on her throne. She is an excellent news reader and her pitch and delivery is top notch but I just don't sense she is long for Cincinnati. She has 'star' written all over her. I think it's terrible too what they did to Dave Wagner. He's every bit as good an anchor as Sandra. If the GM thought hiring someone who would be a 'diva' would bring in viewers, this is Cincinnati. People want people they know. Channel 5 would do well to promote their homegrown talent -that's what draws in viewers.

You actually believe that? It came off of 12's website. Of course he's going to say that about the station that currently signs his paycheck. All it would take is a better offer somewhere else, or 12 not renewing him, and he would be changing his tune.

And don't fool yourself... if the little woman gets a job somewhere else, he would be following her like a puppy dog!

Another VCR ALERT:

Brian Patrick's last newscast is tomorrow night (12/31/06) 11 p.m. New Year's Eve

Channel 9 is getting rid of him...they probably figure there's no since in having 2 anchors do the weekend evening news, since Courtis Fuller does it by himself (Channel 5) and Paula Toti does it by herself (Channel 12)

Brian Patrick has been at Channel 9 for 16 years. What a remarkable career, Brian

Did anyone catch Jim O'Brien at 11:00 last night during his last newscast?

Poor guy...all he got to say was "Sheree, it's been a pleasure" then it looked like Sheree was going to cry...

And right after the 11:00 news ended, they showed that promo that Jim used to do except Derek was doing it, and he said EXACTLY what Jim said on it...duh, they could have changed it a little for Derek !!!

O'Brien out. Wagner sidelined. Sussi off to Orlando. What the hell is going on at 5? Any inside information. I'm a long-time viewer and can't figure out why all the changes. I liked Sussi's consumer stuff. Even that damn bone. What happened?

Note: When Eric Green arrives at 5 from Huntington, WV... not Wheeling. His presentation is ahead of many in the market...

My top picks, in order as far as presentation style and over all presense.

Raleigh
Norris
Horton
Eric Green (when he arrives)
Bateman
Boutilletter
Horstmyere

i think dicky dyer and brennan spend all the time on this site leaving good comments bout 5 and bad comments bout every other station.

dicky stop the revolving door and your ratings will go up its a proven winner here in cincy

I personally dont mind courtis, its just when he begins a story it always begins let me tell you. Courtis is always featuring stories bout him helping the black community. Courtis we get the idea your the next kabbaccka

didnt the demos come out last week, i know dicky was raving bout how 5 was the most watched with women 18-34 and 34-55.
5 also got 95 percent of the black demo.

2006 Local News Year-In Review:

Kristen Cornett -- gone (February) and now laughing in Channel 5's face!!
Harvey Smilovitz -- fired (August)
Rich Appuzo -- fired (September)
Marina Jurica -- fired (November)
Jim O'Brien -- fired (December)
Brian Patrick -- fired (December)

And yes, I agree with above Anon poster...

why in the *beep* does Courtis Fuller have to start every freaking story with , "let me tell you........"

have you noticed that 5 hardly reports news anymore. everything they do is them giving stupid advice about how to live our life. at least 9 actually tells us what we should know

or Courtis starts a story with "I must tell you...." or "we should tell you....." he drives me CRAZY!!!!!!!

Yes, channel 5 seldom reports actual "news" anymore...only 5 tips on "how to look healthy" or "how to clean your room" WHO CARES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You've been in this town a long time...I know Jim Scott keeps talking about his home in upstate NY, BUT there is is a story in Cincinnati lore that keeps coming to the surface. The story is Jim is the product of an affair between a young (OK, younger) Ruth Lyons and YOU!

Tell me that I'm the only person who has heard that one......

Even if Cyndee O'Quinn did announce she was pregnant... nobody would know because you wouldn't be able to understand what she said, just like in her weathercasts!! I agree she is looking chunky though.

Speaking of people you can't understand, How does Regina Russo stay on the air.

She can't sit still in the anchor chair, swaying back and forth. I get sea sick watching her. I feel like the room is moving.

How does she still have a job...Oh, I know. 19 CAN'T fire her, and no one else would hire her.

i have no idea how ms. russo is still on the air. between her and cammy dierking, i'm not sure who is most annoying. has sandra ali on channel 5 gained some weight? kinda looked like she has. i'm a channel 9 viewer myself and switched to 5 during a commercial and ms. ali certainly looked a tad plump. ever seen sheree? i saw her walkin in the mall the other day...she's tiny!

you know who used to ALWAYS sway back and forth, speaking of that, is former ch.5 anchor Anne Marie Tiernon!!!!!

SANDRA ALI has definitely been movin up the scale. She looks totally different in the face. Too much wedding cake perhaps??
