Never mind! Jerry Thomas just called to say that he’s canceled his big on-air retirement party next Thursday morning (12/14) at Primavista in Price Hill.
"The party is off. I told them up front I didn’t want a party, and I had them cancel it. I’d hate to have people show up. I’m against it 100%," said Thomas, a WKRC-AM (550) personality for 44 years.
Thomas, who turned 67 last month, had told his Clear Channel bosses that he didn’t even want a a cake. But station managers contacted his wife and children, got their blessing, and began inviting politicians and celebrities to a
Thomas, the #1 morning man here for years, wants to go quietly. He won’t say when his last show will air.
"I just don’t want to make a big deal about it. It may be weird, but that’s the way I feel about it. It’s my retirement.”
Gimme a break!
ReplyDeleteI have an idear...have 55KRC play the copy of the 40th anniversary party from Mike Fink's instead.
We'll be able to hear every story from Jack Remington and others.
I know of one person with the full broadcast on radio-quality tape. :)
HOLD THE PARTY ANYWAY
ReplyDeleteI like the idea of broadcasting the 40th Anniversary party.
ReplyDeleteHeck--why not an entire day of 1965 radio?

He is mad about the layoffs - and this is the way he will retaliate.

Jerry Thomas tells Keis he want's no fanfare for retiring. "One day I'm here and the next day I'm gone".
ReplyDeleteThat line is taken straight from Page 11 of the Clear Channel Employee Handbook.
Can News 5 get any worse? They tease three times that I'm going to be really surprised to hear which Bengal got a DUI. Well, I'm not surprised that ANY Bengal is arrested these days. Then they don't back up why I SHOULD be surprised. Was Deltha O'Neal a stand-up MADD supporter? Mormon?? C'mon, give me something surprising. Then Angela Brown ends her report with, we just haven't heard much about this guy. Yeah, O'Neal's a real nobody on the roster. Gimme a break.
ReplyDeleteAnd Jonathan Hawgood must be stopped. If you saw his little freak-out on the "Marine stands still while Christmas Tree falls" video - you know what I mean. Newsreaders should not break into character voices - especially making fun of the military. Gag.
Character voices is almost like the end of 12's Friday Night Finals, when the entire floor crew broke out into "American Bandstage/Soul Train" dancing.
ReplyDeleteNot cute.
Made me yearn for an Al Schottelkotte newscast!
Report: Radio Consolidation Hurts Public
ReplyDeleteDec. 08, 2006
By Mike Boyle
On Dec. 13, The Future of Music Coalition is scheduled to release a new report called “False Premises, False Promises: A Quantitative History of Ownership Consolidation in the Radio Industry.” The Coalition says the report will show that radio ownership consolidation at the national and local levels has led to fewer choices in radio programming and harmed the listening public and those working in the music and media industries, including DJs, programmers and musicians.
“When Congress passed the Telecommunications Act of 1996, the radio industry changed drastically,” FMC research director and the report’s author Peter DiCola said in a release. “Historical data from the industry reveal unprecedented consolidation and show that the Telecom Act has backfired in terms of the FCC’s goals of competition, localism and diversity in radio. Commercial radio now offers musicians fewer opportunities to get airtime and offers the public a narrow set of overlapping and homogenized programming formats.”
The report will be posted at www.futureofmusic.org at noon ET on Dec. 13. Key findings in the report will include:
•The top four radio station owners have almost half of the listeners and the top ten owners have almost two-thirds of listeners.
•The “localness” of radio ownership -- ownership by individuals living in the community -- has declined between 1975 and 2005 by almost one-third.
•Just fifteen formats make up three-quarters of all commercial programming. Moreover, radio formats with different names can overlap up to 80% in terms of the songs played on them.
•Almost exclusively, smaller station groups provide niche musical formats like classical, jazz, Americana, bluegrass, new rock and folk, where they exist.
•Across 155 markets, radio listenership has declined over the past fourteen years, a 22% drop since its peak in 1989. The consolidation allowed by the Telecom Act has failed to reverse this trend.
These are the ABC programs that WCPO is pre-empting this week:
ReplyDeleteTuesday, Dec. 12, 8 p.m., a St. Jude special instead of the 40th anniversary special of How the Grinch Stole Christmas (I'm sure the station will get complaints about this).
Friday, Dec. 15, 9 p.m., ZIP Code 007 instead of 20/20.
I'm just curious: Has WCPO made an agreement with the other local network affiliates that it will be the one to take off network programming?

There is no way that 90% of people are going to have a set top box in 2010.
Time Warner and Disney Suck Big Time they could at least have a temporary truce and let us see the crosstown shootout
ReplyDeleteobrien is gone.
ReplyDeletenow that obrien is gone. Derek will bring the ratings up at 5.
ReplyDeleteIt will hurt news5 today ratings, but if marnia keeps wearing those outfits like she wore today i will keep watching.
Marina has my vote as sexiest weather specialist.
Talk about a dream team. Sandra, Sheree, Marina(wear the outfit she wore today) and candice hunter as sports.
Look for Eric Green to be the next met at WLWT (he was weeks ago and arrives from WOWK-TV in Huntington, WV)
ReplyDeleteAlso a little bird tells me you'll see Pat Berry back on the air in Cincinnati... stay tuned.
heres eric green's bio. http://www.wowktv.com/bios.cfm?func=viewbio&bioid=131#
ReplyDeletewhats 5 gonna do with him is he going to be the morning met.
i could see pat barry back at 19 as chief
ReplyDeleteIt wouldn't surprise me to see Pat Berry back on 19...I guess sales for 55KRC and Jerry Springer's show isn't bringing in what it used to be...especially when Jerry and Granny retire.
ReplyDeleteits funny just watched news 5 and then a commercial for news 5 weather with Jim OBrien
ReplyDeleteDerek will only lower ratings. Sorry, but he is not ready yet!
ReplyDeleteIf Jim O'Brien is gone, why are they still running promos for him and they haven't taken him of the website?
ReplyDeleteI can't tell if Jim O'Brien is gone or not?!?!?!
ReplyDeleteI personally think that news5channelcincinnatiwlwt is trying to pull a fast one on us by saying that job is gone so that they can try other ways of trying to get ratings
ReplyDeleteDerek, Eric, and John.. 3 of the best in the business.
