"American Idol" vs. 11 p.m. News?
That's a good question, a very good question.... With Ch. 19 delaying "American Idol" to 10:30 p.m., how did it do in the ratings against the 11 p.m. news? Did more people watch the news or "American Idol? " Good question.
The answer: In the 356 homes with overnight Nielsen meters, more people watched "American Idol" than local news. Fox's top-rated talent show averaged a 12 rating and 21.5% audience share from 11-11:30 p.m., beating Ch. 12's news, which did an 11.5 rating and 20.5% audience share. It was no contest against the other two late local newscasts Wednesday night -- with Ch. 9 getting a 4.7 rating and 8% share, and Ch. 5 getting a 4.6 rating and 8% share.
For the two-hour telecast on Fox 19, "American Idol" averaged a 11.4 rating and 23% audience share.
Bonus trivia question
Can you guess what was Cincinnati's top-rated prime-time (8-11 p.m.) network show Wednesday night without "Idol" in its normal time slot? It was on ABC, CBS or NBC, not the CW or PBS or Fox 19's 10 o'clock news. I'll let you guess for a day and then post the answer at 1 p.m. Friday.

heres the ratings from last night across the usa.
FOX (households: 18.8/28, #1; adults 18-49: 13.9, #1) continued to steamroll the competition on Wednesday thanks to "American Idol" (households: 17.3/27, #2; adults 18-49: 12.2, #2) and a second hour of "American Idol" (households: 20.4/30, #1; adults 18-49: 15.7, #1).
NBC (households: 5.3/8, #3; adults 18-49: 2.6, #2) then snagged a very distant second place with fresh installments of "Friday Night Lights" (households: 3.9/6, #T9; adults 18-49: 1.9, #T9), "Deal or No Deal" (households: 6.3/10, #5; adults 18-49: 2.7, #5) and "Medium" (households: 5.8/10, #6; adults 18-49: 3.1, #4).
Next up was CBS (households: 6.2/10, #2; adults 18-49: 2.5, #3) with a new "Armed & Famous" (households: 3.2/5, #11; adults 18-49: 1.4, #T11), a repeat of "Criminal Minds" (households: 6.5/10, #4; adults 18-49: 2.4, #6) and a new "CSI: NY" (households: 9.0/15, #3; adults 18-49: 3.8, #3).
Still stuck in fourth place then was ABC (households: 3.4/5, #4; adults 18-49: 1.8, #4) with the return of "George Lopez" (households: 4.1/6, #T7; adults 18-49: 1.9, #T9) and new episodes of "According to Jim" (households: 4.1/6, #T7; adults 18-49: 2.1, #T7), "Knights of Prosperity" (households: 2.4/4, #12; adults 18-49: 1.4, #T11), "In Case of Emergency" (households: 2.1/3, #13; adults 18-49: 1.2, #14) and "Primetime" (households: 3.9/7, #T9; adults 18-49: 2.1, #T7).
And finally, new episodes of "Beauty and the Geek" (households: 2.0/3, #14; adults 18-49: 1.3, #13) and "One Tree Hill" (households: 1.6/2, #15; adults 18-49: 1.0, #15) on The CW (households: 1.8/3, #5; adults 18-49: 1.1, #5) closed out the night.
In the late-night metered markets, NBC's "Leno" (4.7/12) was the top draw, followed by CBS' "Letterman" (3.3/8) and ABC's "Nightline" (2.8/7). Rounding out the night then were CBS's "Ferguson" (1.5/5), ABC's "Kimmel" (1.4/4) and "Conan" (2.0/7) and "Daly" (1.2/5) on NBC.
I watched Armed and Famous - then switched over to Knights of Prosperity.
Armed and Famous was better by far.

As if we didn't love The Office a bunch already, here's a cool story about what a nice guy Ed Helms is in real life. TV Squad writer Joel Keller encountered Helms at last week's Television Critics Association press tour and witnessed him help a damsel in distress
Imagine this scene: an early-evening party in a hotel lounge area. Half the people there are reporters; the other half are actors and producers from NBC shows. To give you an idea: Ali Larter and Hayden Panettiere of Heroes were there; Brian Baumgartner, Kate Flannery, and Melora Hardin of The Office were milling about; Meredith Vieira was bonding with reporters; and Shane West, Linda Cardellini and Parminder Negra of ER were talking into tape recorders (Parminder's nickname is "Mindy", by the way). There were others there, but those are the ones I remember.
Then there was Ed Helms. He was also at the party to represent The Office; but, unlike some of the other cast members, he wasn't exactly a veteran of press events like this. So he sticks by the bar, chatting it up with a friend (heck, I'd do the same thing if I were in his place). He happily but guardedly starts speaking to a small group of reporters (including me) who wanted to find out what it's like to be the guy who made Dwight Schrute likable. Then, all of a sudden, one of the women listening in starts to slowly slink to the floor.
Yes, that's right, kiddies: someone started to pass out right in front of us. Considering she wasn't drunk, why she did so was a bit of a mystery; it was pretty warm in there, and she might have been a bit dehydrated. Either way, she was slowly falling down, and we had to do something. It was fascinating how in that moment, the relationship suddenly turned from "reporter-reportee" to just a bunch of people trying to help out a person in distress, as a bunch of us tried to get her on her feet and clear the way to a sofa so she could lie down.
Helms, of course, was one of them. In fact, he kind of took the lead on the whole operation, trying to flag down a bartender to tell him that the woman needed medical attention -- the bartenders just stood there and stared, not knowing what to do -- all the while trying to help us get her to the couch. It wasn't easy; even though the fainter was in pretty good shape, in her condition she was just 100 pounds of dead weight. Anyway, as we tried to get her to the couch, she suddenly came to, and the woman's friend took her out on the patio to get some fresh air.
In pretty quick order, Ed and I grabbed some water from the bartenders and took it outside to help her out. From there, we just hung out, making sure the woman was OK. She was embarrassed, but Ed did a great job of making her feel better, engaging her in conversation and making funny but sympathetic jokes about her fainting spell and about how no one really noticed (they really didn't... just the small group around the stricken woman were aware of what was going on).
Ed was actually pretty happy he could hang out and not get asked questions by reporters. We talked about moving out to LA and what he's been doing there when not filming the office. Since I had a little improv background (very little), the two of us talked about the UCB Theatre and ASSSSCAT and a few other things, then we went back to more joking with the woman who passed out.
Right before the group broke up -- we must have been talking for at least a half-hour -- the woman gave Ed her card. When I ran into her at the hotel the next day, she told me that Ed e-mailed her, not only making sure she was OK, but also thanking her for giving him an excuse to escape the crowd and just have a fun conversation.
The reason why I'm telling you this story? It's just to show you that there are some pretty nice, down-to-earth people out there, even in Hollywood. Ed Helms is one of those people. If this somehow reaches Mr. Helms, I'd also like to extend my thanks for not only helping out, but making the night a lot of fun for a woman who would have otherwise left the party feeling mortified. It was fun for me, too. Cheers, Ed!
kiese got a tough question for you what network shows are the most popular here in cincy with ratings. I know the office is wlwt's most watched primetime show, but if you could provide us some insight it would be greatly appreciated.

kiese could a reason local 12 at 11pm gets such great ratings be due to the fact that the leadin in awesome.
I mean look at ER's rating here and then look at 11pm news on 5.
does anyone know if that brain surgeon show, "3 lbs" on cbs was cancelled? i remember watching it once, but i don't remember what day it was or what time it was on. it was an ok show. very witty, but nothing that stood out profoundly...any info? btw, the blog's posting is much better now. it seems a lot more insightful and less "cat fighting." thanks mr. kise
Yes, "3 Lbs." was canceled in November, after only 2-3 shows. Does anyone actually miss it?
I just wanted to say I am bummed our posts are DELAYED but if it means a nicer community I am ALL for it. Sorry you guys had to go to such trouble though.
Is Armed and Famous really worth a look? Isn't that the show I saw promos about with Latoya Jackson as a policeman?
I just want to ask, WHEN is the Office on? Time Warner digital guide will not give me info beyond the weekend*&^%$#@! they need to give us more warning but that is another rant..the digital GUIDE from TW.
Anyway, I just wanted to say thank you to the person who wrote about the actor from THE OFFICE being so nice and helping the woman out when she fainted. She obviously has mild autonomic dysfunction which triggered syncope (fainting) in a crowded stuffy room...add booze, even in small amounts to such a small frame, and that did her in. I am glad she quickly recovered.
It's fun to read NICE stories isn't it? We are so conditioned to bad stuff.
Then again, I was the one reminescing (sp?) about the nice old talk shows of days gone by...Bob Braun, Ruth Lyons, Nick Clooney, Paul Dixon, etc.
I would watch a NICE TALK show as long as they didn't try to make it maudlin and sugary sweet. That's how they do all those "feel good shows" today..make sure folks are crying, close ups of the eyes...sheesh.
That's what I liked about the older talk shows...folks were just themselves and dare I say it LISTENED to their guests and did not cut them off to get to 'their' next question. Also folks went on talk shows just to chat and not use it as an advertising vehicle for the tv show/movie/dvd/book du jour.
I don't understand all the attraction of American Idol so I am showing my age, I am afraid...mid century mark.
I really need to watch some modern shows..I watch that cartoon Boston Legal just for the brief moments of Spader on there but that show has had many jump the shark moments...though I am getting a kick out of Clarence/Clarisse, though in general, they keep changing the cast too often.
