MOJO Working For Radio One

Now we know why Radio One paid $5 million for the call letters and intellectual property of "MOJO" (WMOJ-FM, 94.9) in September. Acquiring an established brand – even though Radio One has radically changed the music – provided the boost the company wanted in launching a new Cincinnati station on a brand-new frequency (100.3) here.
MOJO is the big story in the fall Arbitron ratings released today. The new MOJO debuted at No. 9, with a 4.4% audience share. That's close to the average for "jammin' oldies" on 94.9.
It's too early to gauge impact of the other changes -- The Wolf, SupertalkFM96.5, The Sound -- since they occurred in the middle of the Sept.-Dec. ratings period. But here's one piece of significant news: Entercom's "The Sound," WSWD-FM (94.9) just hired Tommy BoDean as program director. He was KISS107.1 program director for 13 years, until last summer. With BoDean on board, they’ll start hiring local DJs soon.
As usual, Clear Channel’s WLW was No. 1, as it has been for seven consecutive years. Clear Channel also had the top three stations in the 25-54 demo advertisers demands: WLW-AM, WEBN-FM, WOXF-FM. WVMX-FM (MIX94.1) had one of its best books, thanks to the boost from Christmas music, ranking 7th in the 25-54 demo. Whoopi Goldberg's syndicated morning show, which debuted in July on MIX94.1, was 6th in the 25-54 demo, ahead of morning shows on WUBE-FM and WGRR-FM.
