Tom Gamble Out, "Doc" In?

How can you not like or admire Tom Gamble for giving up "SportsTalk," the best radio sports talk job in town, so he could spend time with his family? In a world filled with too many big egos, it was refreshing to hear Gamble say that his kids were more important than his radio career.

I have enjoyed listening to him nightly on WLW. But I really enjoyed Sunday Morning SportsTalk when he rejoins Richard Skinner, for more of the "Two Angy Guys." I hope he and Clear Channel can find a place for him on the air somewhere around his busy schedule.

So it looks like Paul Daugherty, our sports columnist, will moonlight on WLW starting this spring. My guess is that the move will coincide with the start of the Reds season.

How do you think Doc will do? Would you have made the same choice?

This should work out well for all partied concerned.

1) Gamble. You can't go on doing three jobs and I'm sure the radio gig was the least financial rewarding of the three.

2) DOC. He's been very good when he's sat in and will talk sports in an intellectual style, without screaming at people. A pleasant change from the modern-day "in your face" talk host.

3)Clear Channel. They don't want to pay full-time wages and benefits for a show that's pre-empted by the Reds half the year. I imagine they will expand the Reds pre-game show to start just after 6,(for 7:05 game times) so that Doc won't have to go in on those nights.

I admire the choice made by gamble to spend more time with his family.
But choosing Doc as a replacement why not give the job to alan cutler or wildman walker or better yet jeff picero.

I'm sorry, but Doc is horrible. I mean, not just bad, but horrible. He really needs to stick to journalism. I pray they don't select him, because how voice bores me to sleep and often he is a tool for UC, among others. I really pray Darryl Parks rethinks his decision, or SportsTalk will be horrible.

Insider info John: Gamble wanted the job until they told him had to do Extra Innings. He said no, then said goodbye. He would then have to work from 9am to midnight. What would you do?

I applaud Gamble for leaving. He was TERRIBLE. Furman ate him up on his station with the guaests and interviews he has. Gable is a whiner.

No Jeff Piecoro...PLEASE!!!!!

Without this sounding like a personal slam, he just has trouble pronouncing many words and carrying thru with a thought (short attention span). Not good if you're trying to host a show on a 50,000 watt giant.

Say goodbye to Gamble...

Parks won't put him back with Skinner.

Clear Channel won't let him.

I had hopes for Gamble but they were ultimately not filled. Too much opinion. He had to give his view on everything. I guess you could say that is the job description but it tires me quickly. I like Marty on Hot Stove and Tracy JOnes on extra innings. They get caller after caller on the show and it moves right along.

Put Gamble and Skinny back together, they compliment each other and in my opinion, that's the pair they should have tried.

Doc is going to be super boring.
How about Dan Hoard? He has a sense of humor, very interested in
baseball. Maybe he is doing the
Red Sox minor league again.

I don't have much hope for Doc.
He probably won't suffer fools lightly which you have to be able to do in that job.

You could replace Gamble with Tim Lewis. Lewis is the best radio talk show host in town. I
heard him last night on WLW doing the news. I remember him doing Bengal shows on WBOB on Sunday morning's at 6 AM.

I think they should hire former Red's GM Dan Obrien. He possesses all the requisite abilities, and the bottom line is, he would make sports talk fun again. I can hear him now:
"Let's go to the phones, we have quite a few callers: Mertha Campbell, Bob King, Rudi Jaramillo, Judy Johns, Don Cocksteen, Chris Lingus........

I agree with you Avinson. Tim Lewis is the best talker out there right now. There are alot of people who remember how good he was at BOB. He did all those special shows too, like Bengals pre-games, draft parties, etc. He would be excellent doing the Reds stuff.
I did not know he was already at WLW. It seems odd that they have him there, and aren't utilizing him. Any inside info about that?

John - any reason why Sheree gets hammered for comments on the radio, but Deb Dixon can host a NON-STOP OPINION FEST live on CH. 12 all this morning at the David Carroll sentencing???
I've got the tapes to prove it.
