David Rose Out At Ch 9

Now we know what's up with David Rose, who hasn't been seen on Ch. 9 since anchoring "Good Morning Tri-State" Monday. VP/GM Bill Fee just sent this memo to the staff:
"I am sorry to report we have not reached an agreement with David Rose on his contract renewal, and he will not be returning to on-air work at WCPO-TV. Please join me in wishing David well."

Fee declined further comment by saying his statement "is all I can say about David's leaving. This is a private personnel matter, and I'm unable to comment further."

Rose was abruptly pulled off the morning news about 5:45 a.m. March 7 after slurring his words. By noon, Ch. 9 had removed the newscasts from its web site. Fee said at the time Rose was sent home sick by the producer, after feeling ill at work the previous afternoon. Rose returned to work last week, and sent me an e-mail saying that he had had "a negative reaction to a new prescription."

There has been a lot of chatter about Rose on this blog for 2 weeks. I'm sure I'll get more.
But this is what I want to know: If you ran Ch 9, who would you team with Kathrine Nero as morning news co-host? Anyone on staff? Anyone else in town? If you could steal someone from another station, who would you like to pair with her?

Thanks Kiese. You have completely ruined a planned good weekend.

What a shame. I would LOVE to see WXIX drop Rob and add David with Sheila. That would be a wonderfully fun morning show.

WCPO morning show? It just doesn't matter anymore. I have switched the channel/turned the page/written them off.

Thanks for the info kiese.
I'm wondering what offers david rose will get from stations in town.
I say team katherine up with tanya for the morning team.

It looks like 9 is becoming 5 with the revolving door.

Enjoy! I've posted what TV9 bosses DO NOT want you to see on youtube.
They never learn over there, do they?

Personally, I can't get enough Lance Barry. He seems very personable. I love the way he takes the bull by the horns to track people down. He goes right up and knocks on the doors of the bad guys.

if you think rose is getting offers from somebody else in town, you haven't been following this saga very closely.

How about this for a Ch9 combo - bring Andy trinen back from wherever he is now. He did morning in Milwaukee. They are both former Sports anchors. It might work.

It is a perfect opportunity to bring back the great communicator...Mister Randy Little!
How about it, Channel 9?

PUHLEAZE ... Tanya and Katherine .. WCPO is not 'LWT. I can't imagine any chemistry between the two. I really like Katherine, but Tanya's not that great.

I think John Matarese would be pretty good in the AM and noon. He did fairly well when he auditioned with Katherine for GMTS. Maybe they'll bring Brian Patrick back. Then again, he and Julie O'Neill would put you back to sleep when they anchored the morning show. I don't know. I think 9 is going to have to hire from outside.

It'll be interesting to see what happens. Now, WCPO only has one male anchor.

at 3/23/2007 6:14 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Maybe Channel 9 could bring back Brian Patrick, who anchored with Julie O'Neil in the morning before David and Kathrine took over.

We were very disappointed when Brian and Julie were moved to weekend nights, and I know that Brian has since been let go.

If he were still interested in the mornings, he seems like he'd be a good fit with Kathrine.

I'm really sorry to hear that David is gone. I had pretty much given up on WCPO, but liked David so much I continued to watch.
It was bad enough when they let Brian Patrick go and then talk of Michael Flannery, who was doing great segments for kids. Hearing that David is gone, has sealed the deal for me. The only decent channels left are 12 and 19 (without Rich though).
Channel 5 is pretty lame during the evening news. The news stories chosen by the audience, and 5 things women should know, just irritate me to no end. I'm a woman, and don't even want to hear that tripe!

at 3/23/2007 7:48 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

As far as someone at channel 9 goes, there really does not seem to be anyone left there to pair up with Katherine Nero for the morning show. With David Rose covering two shows, the morning and the 5:30pm, it made them one anchor short than a normal station.

at 3/23/2007 8:11 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

I say team Kathrine with one of the following:

~Bill Price, Ch. 9
~Paul Adler, Ch. 12
~Jonathan Hawgood, Ch. 5

Sorry to say after being a loyal Channel 9 news watcher for years-this is the last straw. The Flannery decision 2 weeks ago and now this mess. Channel 12 here we come

at 3/23/2007 10:22 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

First Michael Flannery and now David Rose.It sounds like the entire news team better start getting their resumes in order. What a shame. I really liked Michael and David. Hopefully both can land on their feet at other stations in the area. Is Scripps Howard's news division in that bad a shape that they are making these cuts? HMMM who's job is next on the chopping block?

I will no longer be watching "Good Morning Tri-State." There is nothing else to say.

at 3/24/2007 1:48 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

I don't mean to sound like a broken record, but thanks for the update buddy.. It's refreshing to see something negative from an Enquirer-related Web site about WCPO.

On a side note, you may want to do a follow-up interview asking WCPO when the David Rose promos will stop airing. I just saw one at 1:45 this morning.

I would get former Fox 19 reporter Carolyn Costello. She is now a anchor for NBC17 in Raleigh\NC. She can investigate and produce stories as well as report the news. Very talented.

thanks kiese...been wondering where he was...hopefully another channel in town will pull rose in...he's good at what he does and 9 is dumb for getting rid of him. as for the replacement...there isn't anybody in town that i would put there...matarese is doing good filling in, but he's the consumer guy...so i'm at a loss to suggest. i do know this...i'm not watching good morning tri-state anymore.

I think ch 9 made a big mistake letting David Rose go. They dont have to worry about who they pick, I wont be watching them anymore.

I agree with moving him to Ch 19 and getting rid of Rob.
While they are at it they should get rid of that over-bearing weather man, Steve Raleigh....talk about a bag of hot air!

Does morning TV in this town mean anything? Iim too busy listening to my ipod.

Please Pay attention, before David came in 2002, Michael Flannery did co-host with Kathrine, uhh, not his best fit.... John Matarese did a nice job filling in..... Word is that Michael Flannery is going back on the Comedy Circuit, at least localy.... Brian Patrick has been seen on WCPO's 5/3rd business report the last few weeks, he and Tonya are a nice fit..... Lance Berry and Becky Freemal (SP?) would also be a nice fit...

Kiese,
You know what's funny about this blog? No one posting any of these comments are 'real people'. They all work in tv or have worked in tv in the past. They are all just trying to take shots at each other. As someone working in local tv i would hope we could be a little more professional.

TO: 3/23/2007 5:07 PM Anonymous

I've searched just about every term I could think of on You Tube and could not find the video. What do we need to search for to see this? Please, just a HINT of a tag???

Also to the person who said 9 is becoming the new channel 5 revolving door: 9 would have to fire and replace its entire staff three times over to even come close to 5's dubious distinction.

at 3/25/2007 2:09 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Where on YouTube is the video of "What channel 9 Bosses Do Not Want You To See"? What do I search for to view it? IS this the newscast that was pulled from their webpage a couple of weeks ago?

at 3/25/2007 2:31 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

I understand the decision, but David Rose is a talented guy & will be missed. Channel 9's roster of male on-air talent is so slim, they'll need to go outside the station for his replacement. Someone else suggested Andy Treinen, I think he'd be a good choice. Or maybe Dan Carroll from 19. Or perhaps they could pair Kathrine Nero with Vidal Sassoon or someone else that could fix her hair.

at 3/25/2007 2:35 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

I know this is off the topic, but I have a burning question:

Why in the heck would Channel 12 pay Paul Adler and Jeff Creighton on their salary, to come in every Sunday Morning to do a 3 minute 'webcast' ????? I bet most people don't even watch the darn thing.

No one that I've seen in this town will have the chemistry with Kathrine that David had. He's smart, funny...downright charming. they almost seemed like brother & sister. Back to national A.M. news for me. I don't like any of the choices that are left in Cincinnati.

Like most companys if 12 makes cuts it will be through attrition or salary savings. Many other things are cut before people.

It's a catch 22: 12 has some established names who make a lot of money... but the reason they are number one... they have a lot of established people in the market. (almost all the anchors... then add into the mix Ain, Dixon, Lomax, Hirsh, even Jaffe)

Another factor: CPO wins 5-6... if KRC won all time periods by a wide margin then you could expect some cuts. Most periods continue to be a dog fight.

One thing you can't determine from reading Bio's is how much other staff you have supporting all those people. Do you have sports photographers, special projects, field producers, web staff, an I-Team... etc.

Question, Kiese:

Is the "Matt Miller" who's listed on WCPO.com's bio section as "Assistant News Director" the same "Matt Miller" who used to be a Reporter/Sports Reporter at Channel 5 back in the late 90s??

at 3/27/2007 11:29 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

what y'all think of Tanya & Carol together last night from 5-6:30?

at 3/27/2007 11:51 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Clearly the reason no one is posting the you tube link is because it doesn't exist. They're obviously making it up, or else they'd post it.

at 3/27/2007 11:54 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Jessica from Channel 12 just had a baby. I happened to be watching that morning when they showed a picture of the baby and said congrats.

The Matt Millers are the same. I've seen his picture from WCPO and it's him.

Also, not all of us are new people. I have never been to a news station. I was once at a radio station to pick up a price. I'm just a local person interested in the news with no journalism background. I majored and graduated with a business degree at NKU.

at 3/27/2007 12:33 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Jessica had a baby.

Yes, it's the same Matt Miller.

The Carol & Tanya combo made me feel like I should be waiting for "9 Things Every Woman Needs To Know."

And I'm starting to think this You Tube video doesn't exist -- or if it does, the poster doesn't want WCPO to find out who he or she is.

It's a shame channel 9 didn't recognize a good thing when they had it. David Rose was the best! He was likable and believable and just an all around good guy. I hope channel 9 realizes the error of their ways and can work with him to bring him back. They could really feel it if he stays local and goes to another station. Shame on you channel 9. Thanks for letting me have my say. I'm not in TV just a viewer.

Yes. Get a life. You. The same four little bitter past-present-disgruntled-loser tv people post on here and it was great fun to send you people searching for video of a man clearly crashing and burning his career. You're all perfect? Doubt it. So, yes it was great fun. Get a life. - Chad R.

It's also laughable that YOU complain to the chief-loser instigator of this thing, your buddy "Keese." -- The gag was to highlight how lame you AND this blog is.
It's nasty.
It's bitter.
I like having fun teasing you people. CR

at 3/28/2007 7:09 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Ha! Thank you, Chad R., for the laughs. I appreciate someone pointing out in sort of a roundabout way that most of these people work in the TV business because they're unemployable anywhere else.

Before anyone tries to bust my chops, let me add that I'm speaking from experience. I was in TV (not in Cincinnati) for several years. Fortunately, I saw it for what it was and I left before I turned bitter. Now I make three times the money and I don't have to work with the infants who populate (and ruin) this blog. God forbid you use this forum to discuss why your product can't seem to hang on to its customers and what you can do about it.

Also, to all of the regular posters on this blog, I want to say thank you. I check the comments every couple of weeks for an amusing reminder that leaving TV was the right thing to do. You never let me down.

at 3/29/2007 8:24 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Chad R-
I'm the one who posted that YOU need to get a life, and a hobby. And I can say that until that post I have NEVER posted on this blog before. I'm not currently in TV, nor have I ever been. The same goes for radio as well. I actually work at a hospital. Every once in a while I check out this blog though. And while I agree with you that some of the people on here get themselves all worked up over some really dumb things, I stick to my original comment that YOU are the one with the problem. If sending people, complete strangers mind you, on a wild goose chase is your idea of amusement, then you really do need to work on finding a hobby. Maybe you can volunteer somewhere. You know, actually try and help others and build them up instead of knocking them down, so to speak. I think that I have a pretty good life and I know what interests me and amuses me and what really makes me enjoy my life. Posting fake you tube comments on a television blog so that people actually try and search for it, really wouldn't be very high on my list of "amusing" things to do. I can think of a whole lot of other ways that you can use your time. Signing up for therapy so you can deal with your need to belittle other people might be a good day. Well, that's all I have to say and will say from this point forward. Good luck to you, I hope you find what it is you're looking for in life.
Jen

I've been a WCPO news fan for just about 25 years, So, I just had to say a few words because I really believe that Catherine and David were the best news team I have ever had the privilege to wake up to. I was listening (not watching) the morning news on the day that David was taken off the show. I thought he sounded really out of it and wondered what was wrong. By the time I went to the kitchen to get my coffee and came back to watch the news, David was gone. I totally agree that David shouldn't have been on that day, and wondered why in the world they would let him on the air in that condition. Having said that, I don't know any other details and I am sure I will never know the whole story, but it saddened me that day and it saddens me now to think that I won't be able to hear his laughter and yes, even laugh along with him, on the morning news. Catherine, Larry and Denise are awesome, but David will be sorely missed by many, including the staff at WCPO. The morning David danced with the Celtic dancers, I laughed until it hurt! I wish him well - it will be hard to fill his shoes.

Why is David gone? It's all about the money.

Big questions -- When David had the slurring problem as we watched, who let him on the air? If he has a problem, are they offering him help? If not why?

the one thing i'll miss about david rose is his willingness to get to the bottom of the story. when cincinnati police started carrying tasers, i remember watching as dave had the police come in and tase him on the air. he wanted to experience what it was and get to the bottom of it so his viewers would understand. i wish him well. it will be tough for channel 9 to find a replacement.

Joeolle Girone resigned from Ch 12 in March. I understand she's taking some time away from TV news. On March 4, she wrote an eloquent, touching guest column in The Enquirer about delvering a stillborn baby. My guess that has something to do with taking a break from the TV biz.

Apparently they want to leave one to believe there is more to the story. David really made the morning news fun to listen to. He had that common approach to things. David and Kathrine had a chemestry. I think I will go back to radio for my news. Best of luck to David, I am sure with his credentials he will land on his feet and keep running.

I love the comment about the guy going back to radio for his news. Not in this town fella. Have you ever really looked for news on local radio. 700 bills itself as the news leader and in-depth team coverage only means two people reading "rip and read" from the teletype machine. Gonna miss David Rose, He belongs in the big leagues at CNN or MSNBC

Interesting that 9 didn't renew Brian Patrick @ Christmas and he's Rose replacement.

Can we please replace Terry Daniels. I can't stand to have someone report the grim cinci. news with an "I'm on TV" smile constantly on his face. I get the feeling that Katherine isn't really all that pleased with the match either. They don't seem to enjoy the familiar humor that your viewership has come to appreciate. If it weren't for Larry Handley I would have switched long ago. How about Larry taking over the spot. I know that he is a meteorologist, (and the best one you have I might add), so if he can't claim the chief meteorologist spot, how 'bout offering him the morning co-anchor position. Who knows, he might take it.
