February TV News: A New Battleground
This just in: The TV news wars have broken out on a new front: 5-6:30 p.m. Yes, the morning news battles still raged in Feburary -- with big snow storms, freezing rain, school closings and the Liz Carroll murder trial -- with just three-tenths of a ratings point separating Chs 9, 19 and 5 behind leader Ch. 12.
But the big news in the February sweeps ratings released today is the early evening news competition. In my opinion, the new emphasis on 5-6:30 p.m. in a reaction from Ch 5 taking second place at 5 p.m. in November, knocking Ch 12 to third. Well, Ch. 12 roared back with a vengance in February, while Ch. 9 and Ch. 5 revved up the original content in the early news block.
Ch. 12 increased ratings 38% at 5-6:30 p.m., while Ch 9 grew 17% and Ch 5 increased by only 6% over the 90 minutes. Ch. 12 closed the gap at 6 p.m. to six-tenths of a ratings point, compared to 1.8 points in November. The weather and murder trial also boosted Ch 12's 4 p.m. newscast by 63% over November.
But the biggest leap of all came for Ch. 19's 10 p.m. newscast. It was up 56% from November, to an 8.9 rating and 14% audience share, with "American Idol," the weather and trial coverage. The 8.9 rating Monday-Friday -- against the networks' big "sweeps" programs -- translates into more TV homes than the 11 p.m. news audience for Chs 9 or 5.
In fact, "The Simpsons" drew more 11 p.m. viewers on Ch. 19 (5.5 rating) than the Ch. 5 news (5.3) in Feburary. D'Oh!

Kiese, can you just start out your increasingly few tv posts with the headline:
i'm john kiesewetter and i hate channel 5.
how about you look at year-to-year ratings instead of the apples to oranges comparison of november to february which seems designed only to make 5 look bad?
5 dominates the market in year-to-year growth in early evening.. including a whopping 60% hike at 5pm.
we'll take our lumps when they're deserved...but please stop hiding blatant bias behind fake journalism!
how about the sports shows? who won friday and sunday nights?
I like the MY64 10PM news because it is a concise half-hour rather than ch 19's full hour of oft-repeated news and overkill weather.
But the sports commentator on 64 is not good. She (Tara Pachmayer) talks too fast and swallows her words, probably because she is alloted such little time.
Looks like things are still slow there in the News5 newsroom.
From the looks of things, the 10 O'Clock news is the only thing that gets ratings on My64.
Hey 5 staffer How did the 11pm news do. DOH they lost to the simpsons. What also happened to 5 things every woman needs to know.
5 things 5 needs to understand before they win a ratings book. What would your suggestions be.
1. Provide anchor stability
2. Get a better news director
3. reassign reporters to cover there strenghths
4. stop changing meterlogist.
5. Get rid of the fake anchors.
I really don't understand why people hate channel 5 so much. The Simpsons are pretty good, though.
And how about channel 19? The best I can tell, they have like six people working there. Somebody must be making money.
I personally think 5 would be better off airing syndicated programming rather than trying to produce news.
Lets see what happens when RRRRRRRRRRRRandi Ricoooooooooo arrives at news 5 and i think local12 on my 64 is a little bit higher in the ratings.am i right or wrong john?
They apparently ran out of things that women need to know!
I'm still waiting for "5 things every woman needs to know about driving the van down the high speed lane of I-75 at 45mph during rush hour while eating an egg mc-muffin and applying makeup and talking on the cell phone simultaneously."
Dear News 5,
Please keep your News Director as long as possible.
Sincererly,
Ch. 12 and 9
To the first poster: the reason there is such animosity towards channel 5 is because of the fact no one there can accept the station comes in dead last.
I'm sure everyone works very hard, but management makes so many stupid moves by hiring & firing on-air personalities at the drop of a hat.
How do you fire your "undisputed severe weather leader" and replace him with someone no one's ever heard of an expect people to watch when weather hits?
The promotions for Derek are so funny because they promote him like he's a brand - but he isn't. I'm sure he's capable and competent, but he's unknown.
And there isn't one person in that weather department that was there, what, even a year ago??
Maybe if you keep the same people for about 5 years, you'll start to build a following again.
Until then, take your lumps and your losses.
To the first poster: I compared Feb to November, because taking second at 5 p.m. in November was a big break-through for 5. I didn't use February last year because of the Winter Olympics, which skewed normal viewing patterns.
Randiiii Riccccccwhoooooo couldn't even make it in the Dayton Market. What makes you think she can make it at the cellar dwellar channel 5.
Saw Randi Rico this AM on "News 5 Weather Plus".......
She's pretty good. We'll have to wait and see...seems kind of spunky, which could be bad or good.
You know who I feel sorry for? John Bateman---he has been there longer than any of the other meteorologists, and he has the worst schedule---Sat & Sun nights. UGHHH
If I were him, I would be flying outta there. Shows how much they really care about someone who has been at Ch.5 since 2004.
I only watch my 64 for friends and maury. I watch fox19 for the 10pm news
