What's Up With David Rose?

Something's up with David Rose, Ch 9 morning and 5:30 p.m. co-anchor, whose contract is up for renewal. He's the guy who was sent home at about 5:45 a.m. on Wednesday, March 7, after slurring his words. GM Bill Fee says he was sick, and sent home by a producer. The station pulled the archived newscast off its website by noon that day.

So today, after co-anchoring the monring news today, Fee announced that Rose won't anchor at 5:30 p.m. today or the Tuesday morning news. Strange. Asked if Rose's contract was not being renewed, Fee said: "At this point, I cannot confirm or deny it. At a certain point in the future, I'll be able to comment. When I'm able to say something, I will."

Rose's photo remains posted on the www.wcpo.com website, but his biography was not accessible. I haven't been able to reach Rose for a comment.

On March 7, Fee said the newscast was pulled down as part of the station's work to relaunch its website, which happened last week. Said Fee: "We did not pull a newscast off the website because of anything David Rose did. Absolutely not!"

In an email last week, Rose blamed his March 7 behavior as "a negative reaction to a new prescription.... I assure you there was no other problem this past Wednesday. Regarding (my) contract, we are still in neogitation. That's not unexpected and I feel we are still headed in the right direction. These things just take the time they take."

I'll bet you still get grilled by all the crying bloggers for not getting to the bottom of this sooner, just because you are in bed with the folks over at nine......
FWIW, thanks for the info. If this guy does have some type of problem, lets hope he gets it straightened out, moreso than worrying about whether he is anchoring the next news cast or not.

It doesn't take a lot of "digging" to get to the bottom of the David Rose situation... all it takes is a search engine, youtube, a major newspapers, and some sense to know you don't move backwards in market size. You'll quickly find out that Rose isn't squeeky clean. Oh, and realise that he didn't list this city on his bio.

John:

I think your coverage of this is a bit gossipy and speculative. We watch Kathrine and David almost every morning, and are concerned about him if his speech was slurred at 5:30 in the morning, and it's in fact related to a medication or illness. I hope he is well and we look forward to seeing him on the news again soon.

Why are you writing this? David Rose is the only reason I watch the news in Cincinnati. His enthusiam and charisma is the only thing worthy about catching some news in the Nati. Get creative and write about something else.

John, last week I offered a post breaking down why from a technical aspect Bill Fee's statement about the "missing newscast" didn't make a lot of sense. My post never made it to the website.

I am disappointed by that, since I hoped this to be a site for a free exchange of ideas and opinions.

That said, I am glad to see you are fully quoting Bill Fee on this latest flap, because I believe his comments are very telling. They really show something larger is going on here.

This sounds like a very sad situation for everyone. David always seemed like a very strong anchor. I hope that if he needs help, he gets it, but we really have to get to what the truth is at this point.

America may like a downfall, but we love a comeback. Just be straight and honest with us.

There are a few other biographies that error out as well on Channel 9's website, including other anchors and reporters. I suspect they still have some repairs to do after overhauling their website.

I'm not buying Bill Fee's explanation of the missing newscast. I work in media/software development, and the idea of removing one specific video, while leaving all others intact, for the reason of a site relaunch is absurd. The lines of code that displayed the link to the video in question were commented out - meaning, someone took the time to edit the underlying code to specifically exclude that video.

So why would one video need to be removed for development of a "relaunch"? If anything, as a web developer, you want to keep all your features in place so you can test them in the new environment. In addition, whenever you do a "relaunch" you always want to maintain the current content until the transition is complete. Finally, the new site is a complete redesign, so I'm willing to bet that the old site code was archived. So why would that one video need to be removed if the entire site was replaced?

In short, the explanation offered by the WCPO GM makes no sense.

So, Mr. Fee, I ain't buying it. The video was removed because of this situation, not because of your relaunch.

John,
Why are you on here fishing for information. From reading the previous blog it sounds like there is a story here that needs to be brought out into the open. Why don't you give channel 9 a dose of there own medicine and do some investigating like there I-Team does.

at 3/20/2007 12:59 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Anon 11:51, it does not at all read as if John is fishing for information here. It looks to me like he is reporting it, and is asking tougher questions of Mr. Fee now.

For the other posters who feel this is "gossipy" -- Mr. Rose chose a profession in the public eye. If he was impaired on television, that is a story.

David Rose is simply on vacation with Rich Apuzzo.

I wrote that the story was gossipy and speculative and stand by that. I realize David Rose and other broadcasters are in the public eye.

The point is, there is hardly any substantiation here -- it would be one thing to report that he was pulled from the air, but then to speculate on why and imply various things is not fair nor especially good reporting.

A good reporter would collect those facts available for attribution and write that -- for example, the whole "his website link" was missing was sloppy reporting, as Clyde's was too when I bothered to check the others to see if perhaps the problem was across the board, and not just David's.

It is Tuesday and I was able to access David Rose's bio on WCPO.com.

Impressed - reporting in LA, launching a morning show in Chicago - Weekend anchor and senior correspondent for Extra (is that THE extra as in the rip-off E.T.???).

Why the heck is this guy anchoring split-shifts in Cincinnati???

In regards to David Rose, I hope he is back real soon. I look forward to the news with David and Katherine in the morning and then evening news when I get home from work. He has given the station a boost with his charm and charisma. I've been watching WCPO news for 22 years and David Rose is the best male anchor I've seen.
Thanks for letting me say my peace.

Sherry

I miss David Rose in the morning. He and Katherine Nero were a great team. I hope his absence is only temporary.

David: I for one miss you and look forward to your return, regardless of which station picks up your contract. WCPO let Michael Flannery go...who knows what they'll pull next.
David, we appreciate your seriousness when a story deserves it. We also appreciate your contageous laughter and humor when needed. You, Katherine and my tea are what wake me up in the mornings and help me start my days off right. You and Clyde are the best male anchors around. Carol

I sure hope David Rose comes back soon. Until then, I will be watching Todd and Lisa in the mornings.

Changing the news I've watched for over 5 years has changed my day drastically. David Rose has become part of my family a trusted friend, someone who brightens my day. Each morning that passes without his charming brilliant and interesting news casting abilities, leaves my day lacking. If he does not return as anchor, i will no longer watch Channel 9 news. Mainly for your station obviously not taking his possible medical needs into consideration 1st & foremost. This should be top priority, not made into something seemingly scandalous. I assure you I will share my view & easy decision with every single person i know & come in contact with. Im certain side effects from new medications have afflicted at least 9 out of 10 people. We've all seen the commercials. Be humane and reconsider the horrible mistake your quick heartless decision may be making on a mans life as well as his loyal following. I mean really, who hasnt had an adverse effect from medication at some point or another in there life? Benedryl has made me loopy.

I am not going to listen to any rumors. All I know is David and Katherine have the most fabulous chemistry of any anchors in Cincinnati. Their personalities blend Like Diane and Charlie did on GMA. Granted Brian Patrick is a fine and charming reporter, but not the man who starts my morning off with grins and giggles. I hope and pray that David is on vacation and will return swiftly. I hope that they will allow Katherine to announce that he will be returning shortly.

The station really needs to bring back David Rose soon! He makes the bad news a little easier to hear & the good news so much more fun. The cowboy monkey thing was a crack-up. Thanks David for making me laugh so early in the morning! You Rock!

I cannot believe David Rose is gone. Are they crazy? He, by far, was the best anchor man they had. What are they thinking...Hello channel 12!!!

WCPO TV 9 was always the station we watched our entire Family loved David Rose if you ever paid one bit of attention you would know that David Rose was always on-air at a moments notice. I think TV 9 just became tight assed and thought they could get rid of David and save some change but let me tell you the proof will show up as sponsors jump ship.

My company has already done so.

Huge Mistake,

Donna

WCPO TV 9 has made a Huge mistake by getting rid of David Rose he waa the reason our entire family watched TV 9... He was always fun and professional ...you guys think you can save some change by getting rid of the Best News Person in Ohio but trust me your fans and sponsors are the folks who will show you how screwed up TV 9's has now become. Our family business for one have pulled our commercials. ..

I can not believe David Rose is gone..I was out of town for a week and noticed he was not on in the mornings after my return..I just kept watching thinking he was on vacation or hosting the evening news (never get to watch evening news so I never noticed he was not on there either)..my middle school and I always have on the morning news with David and Katherine and finally this morning I told my daughter to look on the internet to see where David went...I was blown away to be reading some of the things on here...My daughters are just 14, but they will watch the morning news...they say David cracks them up...David and Katherine have such a great chemistry..she is always like the older responsible sister trying to keep her goofy brother in line...we loved watching them...and it is funny the comment left earlier about the monkey...the first thing my daughters said is "whos going to laugh at Whiplash the monkey...what ever he has done only can be an innocent mistake or proves that he is human like everyone else...everyone has a private life...he has a great lightheartedness about him which is great for the early morning news to get your day started with a chuckle...it is dull without him..

sorry to see david go but brian was on there first and so was julie and I liked them better to get the news first thing in the morning. I hope if david does have any medical problems that they are taken care of so he can return to his chosen profession

It's about time David Rose is gone. He's the reason I quit watching wcpo. He was just plain arrogant and cocky. He just thought the world of himself - and it got REAL old. Katherine seems like a nice enough person. Brian Patrick was always great - and I'm glad to see he's back. He's a nice guy. I'd rather wake up to him any morning, than to have to look at David Rose another second. I wish him good health if he's ill -- but let's hope he takes a job far away from Cincinnati. My sister and several coworkers completely agree.

I noticed immediately David's absence from the news. He had been such a presence working on every broadcast it seems. At first I was not sure I liked his approach but after a while it really grew on me and I began to enjoy his light manner and easy going wit. He sincerely seemed to be having a good time on the air. He was surely the hardest working man in local broadcasting. I really don't pay much attention to WCPO anymore. The rest of the talking heads are as flat and boring as the landscape north of 275!

I don't care why he is gone, I want him to come back! David and Katherine was the only news I enjoyed watching. He had a way to make you smile in this world today such as it is. Whatever station is fortunate enough to have him as their anchorman is the station I will watch!

David Rose is a weekend anchor for Fox at KCPQ Q13 in Seattle. His bio mentions WCPO in Cincinnati. Here is an excerpt.

... "David came to Q13 FOX News from Cincinnati, Ohio, where he spent the last five years as an anchor and managing editor of Good Morning Tri-State at WCPO-TV, the ABC affiliate in Cincinnati. He was recently voted winner of the 2007 Ohio Associated Press Broadcasters Best Anchor award." ...
