Sweeps Begin, TV Shows End: What Was The Best?

TV sweeps begin tonight -- as if you can't tell by the local news promos popping up all over like dandelions -- marking the beginning of the end of the 06-07 TV season. And tonight, two fairly successful rookie series end their first season, "30 Rock" (9 p.m., Ch. 5) and "October Road" (10:01 p.m., Ch. 9).

All in all, I didn't think it was a bad TV season. We've seen some interesting new shows this year that deserve renewal.

So here's my question: What was the best new show for the 06-07 TV season? The ratings say "Heroes," but you might say something else. "Ugly Betty," "Brothers & Sisters," "The Class," "Rules of Engagement," "Jericho," "Shark," "Men In Trees,' the ill-fated "Studio 60," "The Black Donnellys" and even "Are You Smarter Than A Fifth Grader ..... Which was your favorite new show and why? What was the best comedy?
If you had the power to renew first-year shows, which would come back in the fall? (Yes, you're allowed to mention shows long gone, like "Kidnapped.")
And which new show was the worst?

Favorite new show would be Drive, which has already been canceled by the always-impatient Fox.

Among survivors, either Heroes or Ugly Betty.

I was glad to see "Smith" - the bad guy how he does it show get canceled - I just couldn't stand to watch it as I was starting to almost like the bad guy.
My favorite new show is hands down "Jericho" - I dvr it ever week and wait until it is over to watch it so I can skip the commercials and not miss a moment of the show.

I second utech's favorite. Give a big nod to Jericho. The writing is out of this world good. There are lots of subplots swirling along through the main plot line. There are lots of clues hidden inside things on the show for the sharp eyed, or even the slow eyed with tivo or dvr. For example, there is a morse code message to start every episode. For those who are able to translate morse, the message each week chenges, giving a clue about the evening's episode.

From what I have watched of it, I also give a nod to Shark, but being against ER makes it a tough choice for me.

I feel your pain, Anon 11:23. Last year, the Nightstalker got canned right out of the shoot too, and IMO could have been another watercooler classic given a little time to develop.

I haven't seen any new faces on Channel 9 yet to fill David Rose's absence... any word on who will be his replacement?

My favorite new show is SHARK. It's classic James woods. The stories are always great. SHARK has a good cast as well. I love seeing NYPD Blue alumini in shows. Henry Simmons doesn't dissapoint at all.

30 Rock on NBC is VERY funny. Alec Baldwin is a genius in that role. Tracy Morgan hilarious. Tina Fey very good.

I really liked Friday Night Lights but ironically NBC could never get females to watch the show since many thought it is strictly a show about football. It was a show about LIFE, people! I'll miss it. (I know, it's not technically cancelled, yet. But give them time...)

To Anon 2:06 p.m.:
You won't see a new face on Ch 9 to replace David Rose this month, and maybe not next month either. Brian Patrick signed a 3-month deal to work though June, while they find a permanent replacement. Nobody expected them to try out a new anchor in May sweeps.

Best written shows by FAR - "Family Guy" and "South Park"

Worst shows - (other than reality shows) - New Adventures of Old Christine

The worst show on TV... "How I Met Your Mother" I just don't get it. How is this show funny! IF it was on ABC or FOX, this show would have been axed after two showings. If it's back next year, it's renewal is only because of it's timeslot on CBS Monday. Bring back WKRP!

Ugly Betty and Brothers and Sisters. They both make me laugh and both have great casts.
