Cincinnati Radio Winners and Losers

Winter quarter Arbitron ratings (Jan.-March) came out today with several surprises.

--The Sound: "The Sound" (WSDW-FM, 94.9), was a strong #2 for men ages 18-34, second to WEBN-FM. It was #3 for all listeners ages 18-34 (behind KISS and 'EBN). It's operated by Bonneville, which is buying the old CBS/Entercom cluster of WKRQ-FM (Q102) and country WUBE-FM (B105.1) . "The Sound" has more than doubled the audience that CBS had a year ago for rocker WAQZ-FM on 97.3. The strong debut for the mix of AAA/new & '90s alternative rock/Top 40/Hot AC -- surprised me given all the carping about lousy Cincinnati radio by readers of this blog.

--SupertalkFM96.5: Many have been asking how Andy Furman is doing on SupertalkFM96.5, and now we know: Not so super as I had expected. Furman's afternoon show on Cumulus' WFTK-FM was #18 overall, while Lance McAlister's sports talk on WCKY-AM (HOMER 1530) was No. 13. He was also beaten by Dayton country station WHKO-FM, and Christian WAKW-FM. Overall, the station was tied at #19 with the BUZZ (WDBZ-AM), while HOMER landed at #17. Furman and GM Karrie Sudbrack, hired away from Clear Channel in February, say they're pleased with the first full ratings book for the talk format new to the FM dial. Furman also says more definitive ratings come out Friday, for his exact 4-7 time period. What was released Thursday was for Arbitron's afternoon block of 3-7 p.m.

"Supertalk is brand new. People are just beginning to find us now. We almost beat WCKY in our first book. I'll take that," says TJ Holland, operations director.
Sudbrack says she's "definitely exploring putting on more local shows" on Supertalk.

At 7 p.m. Sunday, the weekly "City Talk" urban issues show with Michael Sweeney and Tom Schaefer, moves to Supertalk from WSAI-AM. Councilman Chris Bortz will talk about the Banks project.

--WGRR: The trade for WGRR-FM from Entercom/CBS has paid off for Cumulus. Under Keith Mitchell (formerly MOJO), the station jumped to #3 overall. The station now plays mostly classic hits from the '70s, '80s and '90s. "We've made some subtle changes, and it's done well," Holland says. (Have some of the old MOJO listeners tuned in WGRR?)
Longtime DJ Jim LaBarbara, who was fired in March, was #4 afternoons on WGRR-FM for all listeners, behind WLW's Gary Burbank, WUBE's Duke Hamilton and WEBN's Jay Gilbert. Mitchell replaced him last month in a budget moved ordered by corporate.

--WKRC: After Jerry Thomas retired in December, after 44 years on the station, ratings went up. The station jumped to #8 from #10 in fall. The new morning show -- with Jerry's kid, Brian, and John Philips -- was #9 in the 25-54 demo advertisers want, up from #14 in fall.

--MOJO: MOJO cooled off, after a fall debut at #9 on the new frequency (100.3) with a new owner (Radio One). WMOJ-FM fell to #11, behind #10 sister station WIZ.

--WOLF: The move of country WYGY-FM cost the station more than half of its audience, compared to a year ago. Bonneville's WOLF 97.3 draw a 1.5 share of the audience, compared to a 3.7 share as STAR 96.5. The WOLF signal is not as powerful as the old Cumulus station. But Bonneville now owns both, so it can protect B105 from losing too much to a second country station. And with some listeners uphappy about WOLF dumping Ken & Kitty, we'll see which way ratings go for the spring quarter.

--WLW-AM: No surprise. Still #1 with all listeners and 25-54.
--WUBE-FM: No surprise. Still #2 with all listeners and 25-54.
--WEBN-FM: No surprise. #1 with men 18-34, #2 (to KISS) for all 18-34, #3 25-54.
--WOFX-FM: "Bob & Tom" still kick butt. #1 morning show 25-54 & 18-34, and #2 with all listeners (age 12 and older).

Rankings for all listeners (age 12 and up) and audience share for winter quarter (Jan-March):

Easy on the comment about carping on Cincinnati radio on this blog. Did it ever occur the carping is being done by those over 34 who have nothing to tune to for "in depth" news/talk/information. In your face WLW dont cut it because its plain crap. Realize that its number 1 but Reds baseball carries them alot as well as Bengals football.

Nice rundown on the various things on each radion station but your missed one. WRRM (WARM 98) needs to change its slogan to 98 Rock instead of WARM 98. Have you noticed their music lately. More rock, more clanging noise. Add another to the list of stations not to listen to. News? Whats that. Ever heard a real newscast on radio in this town. 700 claims it, but its all hype billboards and fillers.

wlw is still number one?? I remember when their ratings were in the teens...maybe close to 15 some years back.

Also, their news is MORE REPETITIVE today than even 5-10 years ago. The stories you heard at 10AM? You still hear at 4pm...same old crap...they run the same local stories into the ground almost verbatim.

Daryl Parks so needs to leave but any new jerk to take over could be just as bad. the Perpetual smart aleck adolescent mentality with the in your face mentality USED to be common in WEBN and now is on WLW...they have lost the mature audience and their own promos are offensive.

i am listening much MUCH LESS and dread the afternoons after Burbank retires. It was fun hearing Trumpy and Gary together yesterday.

Supertalk leaves me cold and might get me as a listener if they get more local talk during the day. I am weary of the generic angry white guy syndicated out the ying yang.

re: Anon from 9:47. I could not have said it better. You hear things at 7am and then every half hour the same story late in the afternoon. There is no radio news in this town. Its just "rip & read" with alot of hype as the news leader, when there is really no news. "In depth team coverage" is a hoot. Two people taking turns reading stories. ha ha. Gary Brubank? He is VERT VERY funny, but has become so tired. But knowing juvenile WLW, someone like Eddie Fingers will take over and the same toilet trash we have now.

I am more than despondent over the ratings for WDJO. Is Arbitron incompetent or negligent or corrupt??

I listen all day sometimes, and at least for a couple of hours every day (although, admittedly, the signal can be so atrocious when the sun is low/down I listen over the 'net). I know other people who have at least added the station to their car radio. But no one I know has ever been surveyed.

Does anyone know how Arbitron picks their surveyees?? Does the company skew toward younger audiences??

Can one complain to the FCC about the signal interference? If so, how?

I hope 'DJO can hang on, but I fear for its future.

re: Anon from 7:45 -- One year ago Warm 98 was #2 12+ with a 7 share. Now they're #5 12+ with a 5.2 share. Happy Anniversary, Cumulus.

In 1972, when Richard Nixon beat George McGovern in a landslide victory, Hollywood movie critic Pauline Kael was quoted as saying "How can Nixon have won? Nobody I know voted for him!"
I think that applies to you and your friends about WDJO.

hey kiese wandering if you had the details on 94.9 the sound and news5 working out a deal to find a local band to create a new weather song.

What on earth has happened to WARM 98 which now needs to be called 98 Rock. Their music is more rock than soft. Headed for SIRIUS. Cumulus has torn apart this place. Cincinnati Radio -- Mayberry!!!!

John,

I know you're unhappy with the direction WGRR is headed (your snarky "WGRR don't call us oldies" comments) but I don't know of one nineties song that has ever been played on the station. Could you enlighten me?

To the ANON Warm 98 bashers:

These numbers are meaningless! 12+ numbers are bogus nonsense and anybody who knows anything about them will tell you that.

Warm 98 is still #1 in the women 25 to 54 demo. In fact, they're UP!

As for WDJO, it's over. The numbers show a consistent decline. Still about the same number of listeners but not staying tuned in.

Way to go geniuses. Again, you have NO idea what you're talking about.

If they stay with the format and add more local to define themselves in the marketplace, Supertalk may work over the long haul as a modest success. Homer 1530 is the station that may have real concerns. We know everybody spins in this business, but the underlying story seems to be that Homer 1530 has limited traction. If Lance McAlister came in at #13, but the station itself only pulled in a #17/1.2 overall - with 50k watts! - that seems to indicate Homer is underperforming. No matter what CC puts on 1530, no matter how many threats come out of San Antonio, the station still gets the ratings of a 1000-watt daytimer. And this has been going on for how many years now...10, 12, 15? Good thing 1530 can still count on dollars from all those hallelujah preacher men looking for that nighttime southern state coverage. But for WCKY as a market force - them days seem long gone.

Laugh at WDJO's numbers all you want - and they weren't pretty - but they must be making up for it by selling the heck out of the station without relying on Almighty Arbitron. Their sales effort has got to be one of the hustlingest in town. I don't get to hear the station all that often, but when I do, their on-air spot schedule sounds as though every small business in Northern KY has received a cold call or in-person visit from a WDJO sales rep.

When Kiese starts talking about ratings for the outfits at the bottom of the top 25, keep in mind their sample slices of audience are so microscopic that ratings are essentially irrelevant. The tiniest fluctuation can tip the whole thing to the other side. You can break out the champagne for one amazing book only to find people wanting to jump from the roof a few months later. *Neither book reflects reality!*

Of course, WLW could probably run nothing more than test tones for a whole book and stay in the top 10. Slightly exaggerated, but the concept's pretty simple. You can have the hottest programming in the world, but without promotion, listener engagement/habituation and sheer old fashioned signal strength, you won't get too far.

This post is for johnnyrichards. I agree with you about WDJO. I also listen to it quite a bit and was really suprised where it ended in the ratings. To file a complaint to the FCC about signal interference you could write a letter of complaint and mail it to the closest office which is in Michigan but I would recommend going to the following website to file a complaint. I hope John allows the link to stay. It is http://www.fcc.gov/cgb/complaints.html

WDJO will never be a success. Let's face it, asking people to listen to music on AM in this day and age is like asking people to give up their CDs, MP3's and Ipods for vinyl records, cassettes and 8-track tapes. It ain't gonna happen.

I used to listen to Bob and Tom, until they became very boring, repetitious, and crude. I listen to WUBE on the way to work and on the drive home. Yes, WUBE tends to play the same songs at the same time of day, but at least it isn't talk radio, and it isn't offensive and crude and insulting.

Where is the great ANDY FURMAN's station????

Andy's station more than doubled it's audience this book, making it the fastest growing station in town.

1530 Homer (WCKY). Wow, can you believe such a waste of 50,000 watts. If you listen to their local shows for any length of time, its the same caller saying the same things. What a waste of those watts. Oh well, football season will be here and then we can hear Brad, I am so lovely, Johannson and motor mouth Lapham doing their yelling. This radio maket is so terrible really!!!

Hey furball, I did not know you could use a computer. Seems someone is patting themselves on the back a little to much. What about that dinner that you promised your listeners if you were in the top 5??

Only in Cincinnati. The county auditor doing morning drive. Really now, that tired old music is soooooooo boring. Hang it up Emerson.

to all morning listeners why not try whoopi. She is very refreshing and is very candid is probably going to be the next co-host of the view.
whoopi tells it like it is.

Anon 5/4/07 4:52, you constantly toss out the "Mayberry" label; not really sure being "Mayberry" would be all bad, but I don't follow your logic. You are upset that Warm98 has updated their playlist and is playing a little harder music, which is a departure from what they were branded as for years, so you label them "Mayberry", in other words a town which harkens of nostalgia and the glory days gone by??? Non Sequitor, sorry.

As far as WDJO is concerned, "success" isn't defined solely by ratings. A station can be the lowest ranking in town, but still be profitable and make the owners a decent living. It's like comparing a "mom & pop" grocery store to Kroger. Kroger is bigger and has WAY more shoppers, but that little corner store is also successful and can remain in business because it, too, is profitable (and probably makes a very comfortable living for the owners at that).

at 5/19/2007 12:58 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

I think it's something like this...correct me on this Kiese if I'm wrong...WDJO is 5,000 watts during the day, but then they have to dial down to 1,000 watts at night because of bleeding through with some Chicago station on the same frequency. It's some kind of agreement/arrangement with the Chicago station and/or the FCC
