Collinsworth Wins Two More Emmys

Those of us who heard Cris Collinsworth in his early days of WLW-AM's "SportsTalk" know he's come a long way in 18 years. And none of us -- even Collinsworth himself -- ever envisioned that he'd win national Sports Emmys for his commentary. But on Monday night, Collinsworth broke his own record by winning a seventh Sports Emmy for outstanding sports studio analyst (for HBO and NBC), and then he won an eighth for best game analyst.

"To win both is ridiculous. I never got a Super Bowl ring, but I had a pretty good night in broadcasting. That will do for me," he says.

The best studio analyst honor comes from both NBC's "Football Night in America" pregame show and HBO's weekly "Inside the NFL." His competition was TNT's Charles Barkley, ESPN's Jay Bilas and Kirk Herbstreit, and Fox's Jeff Hammond.

The game commentary award was for his NFL Network games last fall. His competition was Fox's Tim McCarver and Darrell Waltrip, NBC's Johnny Miller and ESPN's Jerry Bailey.

The full list of winners are here http://www.emmyonline.org/emmy/sports.html

When I talked to Collinsworth today, he didn't forget his humble beginnings in Cincinnati radio. He thanked Bob Trumpy, Bill Cunningham, Andy Furman and others at WLW for their guidance and patience.

"The hardest thing I ever did was being put in a room (studio) by myself, and doing a show for three hours," he says. "Did they beat me up? Yes. Did I almost get fired? About 10 times. I didn’t go to journalism school. Lots of the mistakes I made, I made on WLW. But you survive over time, and eventually get pretty good."

OK, so maybe I'm a homer, but I think Collinsworth deserves the Emmys. I think he's one of the best? Do you? I also like Joe Morgan on ESPN's Sunday Night Baseball, but he wasn't a nominee. Which announcers do you like on what sports?

Joe Morgan and John Miller are the very best on baseball on ESPN. Chris Collinsworth, Troy Aikman, and John Madden are the best in football. Oh, speaking of football how about gabby and pretty boy on the local Bengal broadcast. Horrible!!, but this is Mayberry

As far as Sunday night football recap shows go, my favorite is Chris Berman and Tom Jackson.

The worst are Michael Irving, and Shannon Sharpe. I like Jaws on ESPN but the glasses have to go.

My only complaint with Collinsworth were his comments concerning AJ Hawk "taking a pay cut to go to the NFL." Thought that was kind of cheap shot, but its minor I suppose.

Joe Morgan and John Miller are by far the best ESPN has to offer, but listening to Marty, Thom, and Jeff on the radio this year has been a dream.

No more George Grande!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is completely unrelated but, for the life of me I can't see any other way to contact Kiese on this site (no email or "contact us")... Did anyone see the name of the show that is supposedly going tpo replace the Sopranos? I found this online at Film Junk.com: "Among the new material is a show called John From Cincinnati, a series that is being fast-tracked so that it can premiere in the coveted post-Sopranos finale timeslot. Clearly someone thinks this is going to be their next big hit… and maybe it will. After all, it was created by David Milch of Deadwood fame. But it certainly doesn’t sound like something I’d want to stake my network’s future on. In addition to the rather bland series title, it revolves around a family of surfers living in Imperial Beach, one of whom is a heroin addict, and somehow 9/11 and aliens figure into the plot as well. (I’m getting conflicting reports on whether we’re talking illegal aliens or space aliens… or both.) Did I mention that it stars Luke Perry?? This is probably too crazy a premise for any other network, but HBO hasn’t let me down yet so I’m sure I’ll give it a shot. Still, I can’t help but wonder… is this the beginning of HBO’s fall from grace? I suppose no one ever got anywhere in life by playing it safe."
