What's Up With WCIN-AM?
5/17 UPDATE: WCIN-AM has a new operator, Bob Cox, appointed successor receiver by the federal district court. Cox, of St. Louis, says the station is not for sale. He plans to it around with a new format to be unveiled by the end of the week. He wouldn't say it would be music or talk. All the on-air staff -- one full-time person (Savannah) and nine part-timers were terminated on Tuesday when the heartbeat stunt began.

OK, what's up with WCIN-AM (1480)? Anyone know? Or have a good guess?
Tune in 1480, and all you hear is a heartbeat on the station, which has branded itself as "the pulse of Cincinnati." I'm told that on the hourly station ID, you'll hear: "You asked for it, and prayed for it... Coming soon."
Is WCIN going gospel? For years WCIN has played gospel on Sundays, and done a mix of R&B, jazz and syndicated talk the rest of the week. The station has been in receivership and for sale for several years.
GM John Thomas just told me: "I can't say anything until tomorrow."
Was the station sold? "No."
You changing formats? "I can't comment."
It's been a tough go for WCIN-AM since WDBZ-AM lured away Lincoln Ware and signed on seven years ago. Even before that, WCIN-AM tried classical music. In recent years WNOP-AM (740) owners gave up jazz and sold to the Catholics, and WCVG-AM (1320) switched from gospel to all-Latino last summer.
My guess is gospel.

Didn't even know it was still on the air...WCI What????
Maybe they could hire Ken Lawson...He's not doing much anymore...
I'm a regular listener of WCIN's "The Night Train" that airs Saturdays 1-7am. The DJ known as T.C. plays the best 70's R&B. Stuff you don't hear anywhere unless you have those old records. His show's survived all the changes over the years; I hope he can survive one more format change.
I know they're doing what they have to do to try to survive but whatever format they go with, they need to stick with it for a while. A few years back they had the format the new MOJO has now, and it was great! They had the last local R&B morning show in town, and that was a good show. Now, or at least, up to now, it's been the syndicated programming with the likes of Michael Baisden. The way to happier days for WCIN is to decide on a direction and stick with it.
I guess its wishing too much to say lets gets some programming for the over 54 age range. Enough giggling and goofy crap is on all the other stations up and down the dial.
The new format is wonderful!!!! We have needed something like this in this market for a long time. The is only one small hitch. The power of 1480 is very low and you cant hear it much past sundown in the far reaching suburbs. But this is better than nothing. Thank you WCIN
I LOVE WCIN. And I wish the station all the best of luck.
What a welcome change. I found this internet station a few months ago. WWW.SMOOTHJAZZ4U.COM (Cincinnati base station). I like both stations.
I know this 2008 when I'm posting this but hoping someone else looking for WCIN history sees this. I grew up with WCIN in the late 60s-early 70s when is was R&B (and gospel). I LOVED the late night show by Symphony Sid Kennedy. Anyone know what happened to him? Is there a written history of WCIN out there somewhere? In college I did some reporting for the UC paper and Everybody's News and recall interviewing the owner but now I can't recall his name. I think it was Bubba or something very similar. All I remember about him was he talked a little about WCIN history...and I noticed he had many pill bottles on his desk and was struggling...I think he had a bad heart. Anyone know anything about all this?
