Channel 19's UC Lineup

As Channel 19 prepares for its final locally produced UC basketball game next week, I thought it would be fun to look back at the announcers over the last 26 years.

Channel 19 has had quite a lineup since the Ed Badger teams of 1980-81: Dan Hoard, Thom Brennaman, Jeff Piecoro, Kevin Frazier, Andy MacWilliams, Andy Treinen, Anthony Buford, Derrek Dickey, Tom Kelly, Connie Dierking. Remember Red Pitcher? Ed Jucker did a year. Anthony Buford did more than any other (12 seasons).

Who was your favorite UC TV announcer?

It would be tough to top the early 90's combo of Thom Brenneman and Derrick Dickey.

They proved they were far too good for "local TV" with both moving onto Chicago from here. Thom with the Cubs and Derrick with the Bulls before his stroke.

The ultimate "odd couple" since Derrick was either married to/or dating Thom's mother.

I agree with Anon 8:08. Tommy and Derrick were smooth-along with the best freelance crew in the city.

Dan Hoard far and away the best. Andy Mac very good. Jeff Piecoro is terrible.

I really enjoyed the Frazier years. Although there are a number of unflattering stories about the guy on-air he echoed the enthusiasm and swagger Huggs and the team showed, at that time, on the court.

Remember some years ago when they did a UC/UNC game from Charlotte and the announcing team was Thom and.....Marty? I haven't forgot that one.

While this is an interesting list, props should also be given to the man behind the camera, who helped these people develop. David Ashbrock made the good ones great and the bad ones tolerable. Whoever winds up with the rights to UC basketball should hire Ashbrock to continue producing and directing the games. He and his crew produced "local" broadcasts that looked every bit as good as any"network" game.

Did Thom get choked up and call Marty "Dad" on the broadcast?

Thom Brennaman was by far the best. He worked well with both Derrick Dickey and Kevin Frazier. The UC broadcast teams after Thom left paled in comparison... Buford got a little better with each seaon but his delivery just seemed a little stiff to me. I was always hoping they'd get Terry Nelson. He's always a good interview.

One more thing... Didn't know Andy Mac did UC games? I thought he was a Xavier guy? Was this pre-Huggins era?

Dave Ashbrock has been the producer of these games , I believe, since Day 1.

Losing UC basketball must seem like a death in the family to him.

Does he freelance his services to any of the ESPN production crews that come in?

Dan Hoard was great - my number 1 fav.

Thom and Derrick was a very good team. Loved Thoms exclamations on UC dunks.

Kiese. I lived in Bloomington, IL when Red Pitcher moved from here to anchor news for WJBC in Bloomington. Last I heard, he's now the GM there. Great voice!
