Tall Stacks TV

This just in… Well, almost. At 2:15 Thursday afternoon, WLWT (Ch 5) emailed me to say that the station started doing nightly Tall Stacks specials at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, when Tall Stacks opened. Obviously, it was too late to make our Wednesday or Thursday TV grids, or the TV Week book published last Sunday.
The email said that the 30-minute Weds-Fri shows, and the 7-8 p.m. Saturday show from News 5, will "preview of each night’s entertainment at Tall Stacks 2007."
Yes, 2007.
So that means the News 5 information was not First, Fast or Accurate.

Changing Tide
Did you watch "Survivor" last night? See the Tide commercial? P&G, a charter "Survivor" advertisor since 2000 that pulled out of last month in the furor over the tribes being divided along racial lines, is back on the show. BTW: "Survivor" continues to be a Top 10 (No. 6) this fall.

Moving Heaven and killing Kidnapped?
Only three weeks into the season, and CW, CBS and NBC have pulled switcheroos.
--Stick a fork in "Kidnapped?" NBC just moved it from Wednesday to 9 p.m. Saturday -- when nobody watches TV . "Dateline NBC" will air at 9 p.m. Wednesday against "Lost." Not a good sign for "Kidnapped" fans.
--"7th Heaven" and "Runaway" move to 8-10 p.m. Sundays, effective immediately. The CW (and old UPN) comedy lineup returns to Monday starting tonight with "Everybody Hates Chris" (8 pm), followed by "All of Us," "Girlfriends" and "The Game." "7th Heaven” airs next at 8 p.m. Oct. 15.
--CBS has flip-flopped "How I Met Your Mother" (to 8 from 8:30 Monday) with "The Class" (to 8:30) effective Monday.
One more fall TV note: NBC has ordered a full season of "Heroes," tied with "House" at No. 21 this season.

Radio notes
--Congratulations to WARM98, named "station of the year" by Radio & Records. It was the top adult contemporary station for markets No. 26-100.
--No word yet on what will happen on FM 96.5. Cumulus has been simulcasting the country STAR on 95.5 and 94.9 since MOJO moved to 100.3 two weeks ago. STAR will stay on 94.9, which has a better signal in Northern Kentucky to compete with B105. Only thing new are the call letters for 94.9, WPRV-FM. No clue what they stand for, if anything. Any guesses?

Channel 5's Tall Stacks coverage has been less than impressive. The quality of their live video is subpar. The pictures are too bright and look like they are using home video cameras. Tom Sussi's live a few nights ago looked like a nuclear bomb hit tall stacks. He was overexposed and then real green. They just keep reporting the same stuff. I give them a D-

hey kiese i was wondering your thoughts on the ratings decline of studio 60 on the sunset strip. The premiere was at 14 million viewers and monday it only had 10 million viewers. Do you see the trend for ratings keep falling or no. Would NBC ax this show midseason if the ratings stayed at 10 mill. I mean the bachelor well outscored studio 60 on monday night.

Take it from someone who knows directly from the very top of Enquirer management, that paper's circulation is dropping so fast, it wouldn't matter if Channel 5 posted a program listing there or not. No one reads The Enquirer, and from what I can see, only a few pathetic losers post to your blog. See you in a year in the unemployment line, Kiese, if you make it that long.

fun news for twcable subscribers starting nov 22 if you call and talk to a live person to pay your bill you will be charged an extra 5 bucks to do so but if you go online to the tw website or pay through channel 1501 on the convertor box you arent charged the 5 bucks that sucks. the say they are having customer service problems and they want to put the service back in customer service but with a lot of companies charging fees to talk to someone about a problem now this they should give all the subscribers a container of ky jelly

Excellent viewing on Tall 12 tonight. A switching error just before Letterman allowed us to hear Ms. Pachmeyer discuss her butt for a couple of seconds.

Note to Ms. Pachmeyer: If you are wearing a microphone, always treat it as hot.

2nd Note: You have a fine butt. lol

I am assuming I am the only person in Greater Cincinnati who doesn’t watch reality shows, so most of the time I never know what most of you are talking about. Because of my lack of interest, my viewing habits changed drastically this last summer, since that was all that was on.
In August, out of desperation, I tried watching a number of cable series, which you haven’t talked about much:
Angela’s Eyes/Lifetime
The Closer/TNT
The 4400/ USA
Eureka, SciFi
Hustle/AMC
Kyle XY/ABC Family
Monk/USA
Rome/HBO (I don’t have premium channels; I watched this at the hotel when I went away for a weekend.)
Saved/TNT
Stargate Atlantis/SciFi
Sue Thomas: FBI/I
Three Moons Over Milford, ABC Family.
Rome was interesting, but I can’t watch it regularly. I learned later that Sue Thomas: FBI isn’t even being produced anymore. There were several that I watched more than one episode of, but the only one I really enjoyed was Eureka. I enjoyed the characters and preposterous plots and it is lighter than the other programming on SciFi (a channel I liked better when it ran mostly reruns).

John, at the beginning of the new TV season you asked what we thought of the new series. You haven’t asked us lately, but now that it’s been a few weeks I can give a better opinion.
There was only one series that I attempted to watch and couldn’t get into, and that was Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. Since I never really watched either Saturday Night Live or The West Wing, the show didn’t hold much interest for me.
My track record with new series is dismal. Surprisingly, the other new series that I’ve tried--and there are a lot of new ones this year--seem to be holding their own.
Sunday--Brothers and Sisters--I like the fact that the family’s main controversy isn’t about who’s sleeping with whom, that it’s instead about the missing money in the family business.
Monday--nothing as of right now.
Tuesday--House and Eureka.
Wednesday--Jericho--Its plots so far resemble what I had imagined Lost’s story was supposed to be two years ago, but that didn’t happen. Lost--I hope it is better than last season, which disappointed me. CSI: NY--which isn’t to my taste, but I like Gary Sinise.
Thursday--Ugly Betty and Six Degrees, which I mentioned in a post a while back.
Friday--Men in Trees, which I also talked about when it first aired.
Saturday--nothing as of right now.

Thanks again TW-CINCI. Our local media's usual non coverage of Ohio State sports leaves us with only a PPV option this week. While messing with the remote to determine the cost, I inadvertently ordered the OSU - BGSU... game costing $21.95!! Tried the "cancel this purchase" option, but of course it replied "this purchase can not be canceled". A call to TW customer service (god help me) gave me a recording, "the game is only on ESPN plus, so we have to charge you". This was a bummer because usually one of the locals will pick up these type of games when/if offered. The friendly operator informed me she couldn't cancel the purchase either, so I guess I'm stuck. Oh yeah she told me the good news was that I get that PPV channel and all of its content for 24 hours, which in reality gets me only one other game...Oregon vs. Cal. Whoopdee doo!

Can you believe that Channel 5, the official Tall Stacks station, features a story on how EXPENSIVE it is to go to Tall Stacks?
Why would you do that? No wonder they're the last place news operation in this city. How clueless can you be?
Channel 9 should be the station of Tall Stacks. At least, John Matarese featured a story on how to SAVE money at Tall Stacks.

Did anyone see the new Ohio Lottery game show on Saturday? I think this was the worst thing I've ever seen on television. It was far worse than any dead Saturday Night Live skit.

I looked at my wife and said something I thought I'd never say:
Bring back Paul Tapie and Sharon Bicknell.

This program would be great for ADHD but with no introduction of contestants, no EXPLANATION OF THE GAME (considering it was the PREMIERE episode)....it looked and felt like I was watching some bad Kings Island stage show.

As far as WLWT and Tall Stacks....they need to go back and watch how Jerry/Norma and the gang REALLY did it correct. I agree with the live shots of Tom Sussi. Technically horrible. It looked like live shots from Over The Rhine. Granted, a live shot out of anywhere along the river, on the Ohio side, is a nightmare, WLWT paid HOW MUCH??? to be the "official television stations", when they pre-planned, didn't anyone think about 1) using a satellite truck or 2) fiber??? To hope and pray that someone doesn't change the blinds or curtains of the window the techie is bouncing the signal from Yeatman's Cove to Chickasaw.
Time for a change.

You know what, John?
It is perfectly obvious you tried to get a job at Channel Five at least once in your life and were turned down flat. You constantly do what you can to bash 5. You never do anything positive about the television station that will eventually be number one again and already is in some timeslots. You know this business is cyclical. Everything comes around again. And brother, you will be left holding the negativity bag. Seriously.. you are not a responsible t.v. critic. How flip you are. "they just sent an email.." "I guess they're not first, fast, and accurate."
You really have a massive axe to grind, John. Been going on for years and years. Even when Channel 9 is at the bottom of the barrel on many things.. you keep trying to pump it up. Ownership is thicker than water (Scripps bedfellows)
Keep showing your true colors, John. For once it would be enlightening and shocking to hear you spew the same crap about the other stations and give your readers a more balanced view of local television. What are you afraid of? Being turned down for another t.v. job in the future? You're a television want-a-be who never-will-be.
Keep it interesting not negative.

Sorry I didn't wake up to channel 5 this morning. Probably didn't miss a thing.

The best thing this week was reading the crawl in the morning and reading a web address with the words FORWARD SLASH typed out. Y'all need a prufreadr. What stylebook?!?!?!?!

Leave John alone. He's doing a good job.

Kiese has done his fair share of positive stories bout 5. What time slots are 5 first in for the overall viewers=none.
Folks that was summer viewing, viewers are on vacation.
My question to that idiot aka channel 5 employee just how many anchors, weathermen, reporters, and on air staff has 5 lost since the brennan donnelan has been there.

Yes, I know of a couple high schools that use channel 5 as examples of what not to do in broadcasting. They should just air syndicated programming during their news slots unless they do something at least semi-professional.

Did anyone see them on Saturday morning. Johnathan Hawgood (sp.) was amazed that he was on the "big TV" down at Talll Stacks so he kept trying to do funny things on the camera. What a loser....What a pitiful excuse for a station. Maybe we could hire a local high school to do their news?!

ch. 5 does have some decent talent. it's just that they have such poor management. imagine if we take our bengals team now and hand it over to dave shula. the bengals would sink faster than the titanic! so they need to get the dave shula's out of channel 5. i'm sure talent wise, channel 5 has as much if not more talent than any of the other stations. even channel 19.... although, i'm not crazy about sheree or sandra. they are great to look at, but i have a hard time taking either of them seriously.

Re-read John's initial post. If you can't see that he was trolling for the usual group of channel 5 bahers to chime in, you're borderline retarded.

There was no reason to sound so "flip," as another poster put it. And I agree wholeheartedly. It was a smart-ass comment o make - no matter WHAT station he was writing about. It's juvenile, amateurish crap. Period. I couldn't believe I was reading something written by a "professional" journalist.

It'd be interesting to know who that "official" e-mail came from at News 5. And yes, they DO have some great talent over there. I found many of the Tall Stacks stories very entertaining, and some even informative. Especially if you couldn't make it down every day - you got the chance to see what was happening live from the riverfront.

So again - frankly, John's infantile attempt to openly bash ANY TV station in the market is LAME - and piss poor journalism. He sees what people write on this poor excuse of a blog - and then fans the flames. God forbid he took the challenging route and wrote something truly original and/or thought-provoking instead of just posting the same type of amateur crap his readers post.

As a visitor (but Cincy native), I had a great time at Tall Stacks, and wish News 5 the best of luck. Come on out of the bitter barn, Mr. Kiesepantswetter. And come play in the hay.

To write that post, you'd have to be pretty clueless.

Did you go? See the $5 beers? The $3.50 soft drinks?

Early last week I went to Kroger to buy 2 tickets for Tallstacks. Channel 5 kept saying they were $20 each with your Kroger card. When I got there, I was told there was a hidden $5 service fee for each ticket. I tried calling and e-mailing Channel 5's tip line and never could find anyone to tell. I decided to e-mail Lisa Cooney because I knew she at least reads and responds to e-mail. She told me that she would pass on the info and on that same day during the 5:30 newscast, they clarified the price at Krogers. Pretty bad when Krogers employees tell you that you're better off buying your tickets at the gate and not presale so you don't get charged a fee. As for Tallstacks, on their website for months, they advertised that one day passes would be on sale starting Wednesday. Then Wednesday comes and they won't be selling them.

I do have to say that I really enjoyed Tallstacks. I've been every year, starting with 1988 when I was 11 years old. I wish Channel 5 would have researched Tallstacks more. I found lots of information to be inaccurate when I got down there. They advertised $15.00 official Tallstacks posters. Ok, they are $225.00 prints. Little bit of a price difference.

And to let you know, I do not work for any media outlets. I have watched Channel 5 for all of my life until the past year. I guess I'm getting old when I start watching 9. Only Channel 5 news I can stand to watch is the mornings.

Dear Suckers:
The Newspaper is dying. It's all about web page hits. John knows he will get a rise out of all sides by bashing. Then everyone clicks and posts. It's talk radio on the net. Say something stupid, the phones light up. Post something inflammatory, and y'all show up.
He doesn't have the guts to print in the paper his more controversial posts, and y'all post anonymously - so what's the point? I guess he bashes 5 because the newspaper is in bed with 9. Don't think that doesn't matter.
I don't exactly see 12 doing stories on how great satellite radio is. Alot of y'all really hate the management at 5. Why? What do you care? If you are at the competition and you think 5 is full of idiots, you should be happy! If you are at 5 I would say the battered and bashed management has put together a competitive morning show, and is starting to be competitive at 5pm.
And what's with those lists of former 5 people who left. Y'all make it sound like they lost so many talented people. Come on. Most of those people were average and forgettable. Just like all the average and forgettable people who have left 9,12,19. In fact, this town has been talent starved for a long time. It would say there isn't anyone in town you point to and say -wow, they're a star. OK - I'm done. You've gotten my last internet hit.

John,

First off ... I've been a fan of your column for years and this blog is a daily must read (for both your news updates and some of the posts that follow). Keep up the good work.

My question for you is something 99 percent of readers probably won't care about. FSN Ohio is broadcasting its first high-def broadcast tonight (Phoenix at Columbus hockey). I was wondering if the game would be available locally on Time Warner. Normally, I'd just assume no (having been a Time Warner customer long enough to know that is the usual answer) but the Blue Jackets website lists that Time Warner in central Ohio is carrying the game in HD.

Of course, this opens up a follow-up question: with the expanded Reds schedule in 2007, will any of those games be carried in HD?

Thanks again for the great work.

"...wow, they're a star" you say? I can think of someone right now. And if TV didn't work out for them, they'd probably go back on the road playing music and give a poopydoo what folks think.

As for another post on this blog from a few days back.. Regarding Derek Beasley's "teeth." grrr, baby. Very grrrr..

This whole blog is so incredibly stupid, it's fun. Kiesewetter's just along for the ride.

Just saw on an entertainment website that Kidnapped and Smith have been pulled from their networks until further noticed. Usually that means cancelled.

If Derek is the choice, give him this little suggestion:

It's pronounced: Double-Ewe. Not Dubya.

"Smith" has been pulled. It's gonzo after 3 telecasts. "Kidnapped" shoved to Saturday, lowest day for viewership. I hear that NBC has ordered 13 shows, so producers can wrap up storyline. Of course, no guarantee that NBC will air all 13. But it will make a boxed set some day...
For the record, the first cancellation comes before all new fall shows have premiered (as often the case). "30 Rock" and "Twenty Good Years" debut Weds 8-9 p.m. on NBC.

If you're the official station of Tall Stacks, why would you let your news department do a story on how expensive it is to go to Tall Stacks? You'll scare people away from the event! Why not do a story on ways you can save money at Tall Stacks or feature the various riverboats...how about the history of Tall Stacks. Not, heading downtown to the river? Prepare to be robbed at the Serpentine Wall!

FYI - 5 is tearing apart its sucksessful morning team just as it proclaims ratings growth.

5 is not competitive at 5. Check the latest ratings.

I would hardly call main talent at 9, 12, or 19 forgettable - because most of them are STILL there. The list of people hired to do prime jobs at 5 and then let go is staggering.

Kiese has done positive pieces on 5. Look at the stuff he's done on Sandra, the Top 5 at 5 and the (miserable failure) top 5 at 11. One on the two-female anchor team. Didn't he even do a profile on Jim O'Brien once??
