Sussi Signing Off

Happy New Year! I'm back from vacation, and back on the blog....

Today's top story (for now, at least): No-longer-a-consumer-reporter Tom Sussi signs off next Ch 5 next Tuesday, packs up his Newport home, and heads to Fox affiliate WOFL-TV in Orlando. Sussi hasn't been happy since Ch. 5 ended his in-your-face "Taking Action" consumer segments in May. Ch. 5 is letting him out of his 3-year contract early to do his consumer advocacy thing in Orlando.
"I had no intention of leaving town. I love it here. This is one of my favorite cities. I wanted to stay here as a consumer reporter, but they pulled the plug on Taking Action. They wanted to go in a different direction, and I didn't want to go that direction. It's business. It's their right. They put me on GA (general assignment), but I don't want to cover fires and shootings. I'm bored with it. There's no reason for me to stay in the market. So I’m going to Orlando to track down bad guys and hold them accountable. Nobody else really does that here. Nobody is really solving any problems (on TV news) except for Michael Flannery."
Sussi says he regrets that he won’t have time to tell everyone goodbye. Fans and friends can email him at tsussi@insightbb.com.

The shtick never took hold in Cincinnati. Not at 19 and not at 5.

It's nice he wants to be a consumer report. It seems that's all he's been able to do, if you follow his prior history.

A reporter reports. If he wants to help someone, there's a lot of non-profit groups that could use the help. That's why I have a problem with the Michael Flannery gimmick on 9. And....he's not a journalist, he's a "former" comedian.

You know those end of the year stories they do for all the people who died in 2006? They could do the same thing with the faces of channel 5 that left the airwaves in 2006. Happy New Year everyone!

hey nice update kiese! way to be on top of old news! for those who didn't see it kiese is singled out by newsblues for his work as a tv critic: http://www.newsblues.com/Secure/Bluezette/2007/01-01-07.htm its a pay sight so if you can't open it, it basically rates 80 local tv critics. kiese is in the very bottom section called "the clueless", even below "the self-absorbed" and "the local hacks". it says kiese "never met an idea or a sentence he couldn't butcher into submission". newsblues is the most popular insider site in tv news so this dude knows what he's talking about. clueless is right!

Who cares about newsblues besides hacks who just want to complain about everything? If you really wanted us to care about your opinion, you would have pasted the article in your post for all of us to read. Thanks Hack.

If you are a subscriber (like me) you'd know that newsblues is first class! The entire newsletter and is basically a posting of articles written by local hacks, likef Kies. It also links to the full articles.

For the other subscribers out there, you know this already... but When the editor of newsblues called Kies someone who couldn't find a senentce he couldn't butcher, he was refering to the profile of "Grey makes mornings brighter" about Shelia Gray.

The above anon poster didn't need to post the article because it was just a list.

BTW... Scoreboard: I called Eric Green's arrival at 5 almost a month ago.

You mean there is a place out there that rates the newspaper TV critics? John, what do you think of some web site saying bad things about you? (I wonder if it's anonymous?!?!?!?!?!)

I predicted all of this would happen quite some time ago. And, it did. My next prediction: the return of Norma. She was spotted at lunch with Bill Cunningham.

Anyone notice the subtle change in the pronounciation of "WLWT" by their announcers? Before, the accent was always on the "T". I suspect this went back to the days when the TV station was an offshoot of WLW radio, and the station was even listed as "WLW-T". However, now they have put the accent on the "L". I don't like it. Sounds like they are from out of town and don't know how to say it.

For his last assignment next week, I think Tom Sussi should do a "5 Things Every Woman Needs to Know" segment.

How about: 5 Things Every Woman Needs to Know about driving the van down I-75 during rush hour, doing 40 m.p.h. in the high speed lane while talking on the cell phone, eating a Big Mac, and applying make-up.

To anonymous who posted 1/02/2007 11:27 PM:

I looked at the link and that is Laverne Atkinson. Her married name is McGee. She married a Bengals player (tight end Tony McGee) shortly before or after she left WKRC. She worked in the New York market (WWOR out of Jersey) and I lost track of her. My guess is that my favorite Canadian's husband got a job in the Orlando area and she followed. Just a guess.

To those who make fun of Kiese, I find you offensive.
I like John's information. I think it is timely and valuable. Of course, I actually have a job and a life and don't spend every freaking waking hour WORRYING ABOUT WHAT IS ON TV!! So, reading John's columns and blogs works for me.
Keep up the fine work John. It works for the 98% of us who actually have some kind of life...

Did you know Tom Sussi is not his real name? It is actually Tom Sussinstein.

Those of us who have a real life need John to keep us informed. Who, but a mindless media twerp has the time to worry about everyone else's business?

Sussi was a bit over the top for this city, but he had balls and was entertaining. He's a dying breed in this town.

TV 5 messed up - again!
