It's Official: "Doc" Taking Over "SportsTalk"

You can hear the future of "Sports Talk" tonight, when Enquirer sports columnist Paul Daugherty sits in with Tom Gamble at 7 p.m. on WLW-AM, and then goes solo 7:30-9 p.m.

Doc officially takes over the show on Tuesday, April 10, after covering The Masters for the Enquirer. (He'll continue to write for the Enquirer, and the paper will still be his primary employer.) Doc also be part of WLW-AM's Opening Day lineup, doing 11 a.m.-1 p.m. with Bill Cunningham. (Won't that be fun?)

Darryl Parks, WLW-AM operations director, had been talking to Doc on and off about doing radio for about five years. When Gamble decided he didn't want to the job, for family reasons, Parks offered it to Doc last month. During Reds night games, Doc will do 6-6:30 p.m. Monday-Friday, and the postgame "Extra Innings" show until midnight Monday-Thursday. Tracy Jones will do the weekend "Extra Innings."

So is Doc a good choice? He admits he has "to learn to be a radio guy." Listen tonight, and tell me what you think.

Tom Gamble is the most entertaining sports talk guy in the history of Cincinnati radio and he knows sports. WLW should have made an offer that he couldn't refuse. Doc's writing proves that his sports knowledge is just surface level so I expect this to be very Bob Trumpy. Back to the 80s folks! At least it won't be as annoying as Cutler. With Tom Gamble at the helm, I was a nightly listener. Now? Well, good thing the Reds are starting and it ends at 6:30. Maybe Doc will start to get deeper into the details of local sports though (stats, etc.)

Tom Gamble is terrible. I've listened to Doc fill in for Lance McAlister, and he isn't too bad. I'm sure doing it on a regular basis will make him better.

I thought Tom Gamble was very good in taking over in the interim. But this is when WLW will really start to regret they fired Andy Furman, because there listening base will drop sharply with Doc at the helm. No offense to him personally, but he just does not have the dynamic/semi-controversial type personality that this type of show needs. Furman getting fired for what WAS indeed a racist comment by TJ was a joke. I sincerely hope the show flounders to show WLW what a prolific mistake in judgement they made...

AM is dead. The clarity and superb quality of FM talk totally blows the pop and whine of AM. And I am not specifically talking about the crappy hosts that the AM stations have been putting on air lately. December 2006 was the last time I used the AM band on the radio and I have not regretted the move. SuperTalk is truly the future of talk radio.

Just another example of the SAD state of radio.

If the top sports job, at the top station in town, heard in 38 states at night isn't worthy of a FULL TIME broadcaster something is wrong.

WLW would not make "an offer Gamble couldn't refuse" because Clear Channel is plain and simple, CHEAP.

No offense to Doc, I'm sure he'll do well, but is his own style, which is OK. He's not a screamer (Furman) or motormouth (McAlister).

Clear Channel has done a fine job of making broadcasting a part-time career. They don't have to pay much, nor offer any health insurance or benefits.

What's going to happen the first time the Enquirer sends Doc to cover the Masters, or some other out of town sporting event? Let's see, I guess they get another part-timer to fill in.

You not say Tom Gamble is terrible! How about I smash your radio to pieces!!!

Mike in Fairfield is my favorite caller.

That sure took long enough to get figured out.

Re: Furman. I think Andy is the greatest, but FM just isn't AM. If your not in your car who in the world listens to FM for sports?

I like when Mike in Fairfield calls in.

It's not just Furman. They all do that. The same 10-15 people that call Richard Skinner in the morning are the same 10-15 people that called Piecoro when he was on, and the same 10-15 people that call Lance McAlister in the afternoon. That is why you really only hear the callers agreeing with the host.

I agree with the others on Mike from Fairfield. That dude rocks. I love to flip stations just to hear him call every show and agree with the host. Whaddya say Doc?

A close second would have to be Mack from Norwood.

I love how mike from fairfield has such controversial views, and it not afraid to tell the host how it is. HE is the future of Cincinnati talk radio

Doc is very boring on radio. Hopefully he can grow into it.

Furman is much better since he came back. He gets good guests and does not drone on about his kids and local weather girls like that fred guy.

Nobody tops Mack from Norwood. He's got it all figured out.

I like Mike from Fairfield too. He always adds something new to the conversation.

I couldn't agree more about Mack and Mike from Fairfield. These gentlemen are Cincinnati treasures. Each day I sit close to my radio waiting for them to call. Unfortunately I was driving last Friday, and had an accident because of my excitement of hearing Mack's voice. These Queen City jewels deserve their own place on local talk radio or even television. I hope PBS is listening, because the stories those men could tell would fill a 4 hour program (and probably raise a lot of donations)!

Nothing against Doc, but they made a poor choice. He just lacks personality to draw listeners. I listened last night and found it boring and monotone. That and he said that someone like Chris Henry would be easy to replace (with all his issues, he is still a force and a key offensive weapon).

Glenn in Mason, Mike in Fairfield, Buckeye Mike, Mr.Baseball, PLEASE GET A JOB!!!

I really like Buckeye Mike. I wish he would call more often.

Typical Jackball comment from another Cincinnati management type. Just a word of advice, stay out of my "establishment", or I'll compose a list the likes of which you're sorry rear end has never seen.

I haven't really listened much since the stations moved out to suburbia in Kenwood. The station belongs downtown. Just another example of disconnect with the people.

I don't know why everyone else is upset. Where are the parents? I think Doc will be good. What would make it the best? Doc should give out 3 golfers.

As a Colts fan, I hope Doc is open to covering other teams. I'm a fan of his writing. I also like Skinner. I like Lance too. I guess I really like a lot of different hosts.

Doc is going to start right after he covers the Masters. Well that's just great. Then we'll have to hear about some guy name Tiger. You know he didn't invent golf.

I'm not sure I understand what half this non-sense has to do with Paul Daugherty being the new host of 700 WLW Sports Talk, but I can tell you that I am happy about Brian Fitzpatrick being back on the news at 7+2.

I have little faith that Clear Channel will do the right thing.

As long as Doc talks about hot local tv people, his math skills, and how many shows he tivos each week, he'll be just fine.

Thank goodness Daugherty is going to take over the Sports Talk job. He deserves it, and will do a great job. He should have won American Idol last year.

Cincinnati radio is nothing but a vast wasteland. FM host that belly laugh and giggle in the morning. 92.5 is nothing but fake laughter, 700 Scott never says hello or good bye to the people he interviews and talks way to loud and fast. Ha how about Bob from St Bernard and his heavy breathing while Skinner gives his reply to Bob's daily bitch about the Reds or Bengals. I picture this enormous fat guy in his underwear drinking his coffee!! When was the last time you ever heard a REAL local news cast on AM radio. Just "rip and read" in depth team coverage on 700. All that means is two people reading sentences. They spend more time with promos on their news than the news they give. AM radio in Cincinnati is a joke!!

I hope Doc can tell me where to get autographs or I will not be happy.

My goodness, how many of these comments were written by "MIKE FROM FAIRFIELD"

Dude... Get a life outside of sports talk radio and blogging nice comments about yourself.

I liked Furhman most of the time (he could get annoying) then when Gamble took over...I enjoyed the show even more. He is way better by himself than being with other angry guy. My first impression of "Doc" is he is boring.
