NBC Pulls "The Black Donnellys"

THIS JUST IN @ 4:30 pm Thurs 4/5: NBC replacing "The Black Donnellys" on April 16 with two "My Name Is Earl" reruns. So last "Donnellys" this coming Monday, unless NBC pulls that one too. --JK

NBC's pulling the plug prematurely on "The Black Donnellys," the dark Irish mob family drama at 10 p.m. Mondays. It will be gone after April 16, and only 8 episodes.

When "Heroes" returns on April 23, it will be followed by "The Real Wedding Crashers," a reality show from "Punk'd" producers Ashton Kutcher and Jason Goldberg inspired by the hit movie. Five impro actors will disrupt a wedding; only the wedding couple are in on the joke, NBC says.

Six one-hour shows have been filmed, enough to get through May sweeps.

What's your prediction: Will "The Real Wedding Crashers" do bigger ratings than "The Black Donnellys?" Bigger than "Studio 60 On The Sunset Strip," which was pulled from that time slot in February? Will you miss "The Black Donnellys?" Was anyone watching?

PS: ABC has canceled "Dream Vote" after two broadcasts. Was it the worst show of the season?

John,

Doesn't surprise me about the Black Donnelly's. Each character is dumber than the next. It had real promise but none of that promise came to fruition.

Here's my question, is Studio 60 gone for good? Or is Aaron Sorkin off on one of his writing marathons to get enough scripts to finish the season.

Thanks for a great blog.

Never saw Black Donnellys, think Real wedding planner is a terrible idea.
and on the subject of reality shows, anybody else think that NOBODY will be eliminated from Dancing with the stars tonight.... there were sooo many ties!
Also thought Leeza Gibbons was dreadful last night, but the judges loved her.
from the neighborhood.

Its a shame about "The Black Donnelly's"..I agree it had some promise..especailly with Kate Mulgrew's role as the mother..but the show did have too slow of pace at times...looks like its bedtime after 'Heroes"..

Why the heck don't they just bring Studio 60 back and give it a chance to grow? Remember when networks did that??? Oy...

I am Leeza's age and although I'm no spring chicken I'm not as close to Novenmber as they had her dressed. She looked very matronly. Leeza did "OK". Clearly Clyde's a nice guy, but he's not agile enough for this competition. He should be the one to go. Let's not have a repeat of MasterP and Springer. Although Springer had more personality in his little finger than "P" had in his whole body.

I liked the Black Donnellys, but could see where it wouldn't work on network tv. It was a bad mix of The Sopranos on HBO and Brotherhood on Showtime. The whole goofy narrator thing was a distraction as well. Maybe it will resurface on cable. It has potential.

I taped all the episodes but we held off watching them just in case they cancelled the series. We didn't want to start to get into it and then have the series cancelled.

Yes, what is the deal with Studio 60, a fantastically written show? Is it gone for good? I don't understand why they won't give this show a chance to grow an audience either.

From what I read, Studio 60 is gone. The problem is NBC bought a full season of shows. So they're gonna have to play the reamaining shows sometime in the future (5-7 shows). I thought Studio 60 and The Black Donnellys were awesome shows. If you didn't get pumped at the end of the first episode it wasn't the show for you. I think that 10 o'clock is a doomed slot for any new show.

What ever happened to Invasion?!? I loved that show every Wednesday @ 10pm.

Invasion? It was canceled a year ago, which is why the cop moved on to "Prison Break." Sorry about your show...

Well, here's another one hoping Studio 60 returns.

I loved the Black Donnelly's! My roomates and I watched it togther every week. It was one of the only shows on TV worth watching. I am so upset by this. I think NBC is making a terrible mistake. I'm done watching NBC, they are stupid!

Now I have no reason to watch their stupid network, I'll watch CBS instead. I liked that show, the didn't give it enough time, they don't care about their viewers at all. They have me angry, and I won't get over it, my sister was going to watch it tonight for the first time, but I guess she never will, because they won't give it time, they only care about their ratings not the viewers.

I think that the black donnellys is an excellent show, so I agree w/ the previous post-er if you weren't pumped up after the pilot, this show must not be for you. I think it is a refreshing change of pace from the reality-gameshow-cop dramas that are flooding network tv. TBD should just move on to a cable channel...

The Black Donnellys is probably my favorite show on television right now. Most people who criticize it only have watched one episode (if that). The characters are developed really well over time, and it is quite apparent that some really cool episodes are in the works. NBC needs to give it a better time slot...or at least pick one show and stick with it for a whole season. Nobody wants to watch a show, start liking it, only to have it pulled halfway into a season. Why watch any show they put in that slot? It will be gone right when it starts getting good.

Sorry to see the Black Donnelly's go. The cast had a great connection, but the narrator got to be to much. The story had alot of potential, why did the writers give up after the 3rd show? The characters kept saying the same thing after that.

Give me a break NBC! The BLACK DONNELLY'S is probably the best cutting edge show you've had in years! So disappointed in you. No wonder my GE stock hasn't moved in 3-4 years! Scheechhhhh! Paul D. Sacobay, Maine

Amazing, another good show cancelled and more reality trash. The Black Donnellys and Smith cancelled. Two great programs delivering drama and action gone while we all suffer through the limited creativity.

The Black Donnellys was a great show. NBC you suck!! I would hurry home from work to watch this show. My favorite show ever and it gets canceled why? I even had my girl friend actually get quite during the show and actually pay attention. Well guess it's back to the Bachumpler(officer and gentleman)crap. Thanks for leaving me hanging. Perhaps they can sell the show to spike. Thanks

NBC sucks. The Black Don's was the best show of the year. I think they should keep playing more and more episodes on line.

I know TV drama is a business and ratings driven, but, my friends and I finally had something to talk about other than "Idol" chit-chat. This cancellation and online only episodes is poor judgement on behalf of the network. There was a growing audience and advertisers need to know that. This is one show that definately should resurface either on another network or cable. I'd actually like to see it on FX so there would be more latitude for true grit with subject matter. All I can say is "The greater the risk, the greater the reward!".

I am so bummed they killed black donnellys, i loved that show and have watched every episode they aired online...but now after this last episode i am lost.. what happens now.. who lives???

There's a chance that NBC will air the remaining episodes this summer, just to get some of its money back. Or you'll have to wait until the DVD set...

I loved the Black Donnellys also. I can see how maybe it was misunderstood. It took me a couple episodes to get into it, but since they took it off the air and played the remaining episodes online, I have really gotten into the show. I think that it is a show that needs time. It is a different kind of show. Its not just a mob show its a show about struggle and family. You can relate whether or not you are from a big family. I just hope another network will see the potential in the show and it wont be put on the shelf for good.

I cant believed they pulled the black donnellys, ti was a great show. I am sick and tired of watching a show week after week and the networks pull them with no ending Thats for me,

The show is really great. I too watched all of the episodes on line. NBC is notorious for doing this all the way back to Freaks and Geeks. I'll bet they block other networks from picking up the show. It really has a number of different story lines and although the narrator was annoying at first, he is necessary to make the show work. The last episode really left a lot to build off of. Why didn't NBC try this on a Wednesday night where they typically place this kind of show? It seems perfect for a network like fx.

NBC FUC**D UP BAD!!! The Black Donnellys is the best show i have seen since HERO'S. If it was only advertised better or something, i know people would like it if they were caught up with it, AMAZING SHOW, im extremely dissapointed and done with NBC!!

SO STUPID I AM DONE WITH NBC!! Black Donnellys is the best show i have ever seen next to HEROS. Who ever pulled the plug on the show is a MORON!!! It was a brilliant show, good job screwing the fans on this on NBC...

Personally, I absolutely loved The Black Donnellys & I also enjoy watching Heros, Medium, all of the Law & Order series, & Crossing Jordan . If it weren't for those hand full of shows, I wouldn't even turn NBC on my television. I loved the witty narration, slow but study story line, & unexpected events. All of that made me watch it the next week. Above all, I love the family bond that they have and their reasons for doing what they do, even on down to crazy Jimmy, lol! I hate that NBC has cancelled the show, they apparently don't know an excellent Prime Time TV show when they see it. I hope another station picks this show up because it would be a shame for the show to be over for good. I still have hope for it. PS, Jonathan Tucker & Kirk Acevedo are so damn sexy ;]
