CBS nukes "Jericho"
CBS has nuked "Jericho," and "The Class," but saved "The Unit" for fall.
CBS' new fall TV lineup will have five new shows, including three dramas -- but only one will be a crime show, reverse a trend in recent years. We'll see only one new comedy (from the creator of "Two And A Half Men"), a new reality show. We won't see the Emmy-winning "The Amazing Race" or Julia Louis-Drefus "New Adventures of Old Christine" until mid season.
The five new shows match the new show total for NBC, and combined still don't match the overhaul coming to ABC (11) this fall. Fox and CW announce on Thursday.
CBS' moves include sending "Without A Trace" back to Thursdays, with James Woods' "Shark" moving from 10 p.m. Thursday to 10 p.m. Sunday. "Rules of Engagement," a pretty solid spring comedy with Patrick Warburton ("Seinfeld") and David Spade, gets the prized 9:30 p.m. Monday slot after "Two And A Half Men."

Here are blurbs on the new shows:
--"The Big Bang Theory," only new sitcom (8:30 Monday) about two computer geeks (Johnny Galecki from Roseanne, Jim Parsons from Judging Amy) with a hot neighbor (Kaley Cuoco, 8 Simple Rules).
--"Cane," Florida-based soap about Cuban-American family in sugar cane and rum business. With Jimmy Smits, Rita Moreno, Hector Elizondo. It will air at 10 p.m. Tuesday against "Boston Legal." Doesn't sound like a sure thing to me...
--"Viva Laughlin," a casino drama starring Hugh Jackman (also produces) and his rival (Lloyd Owen, "Young Indiana Jones Chronicles"). Like ABC's short-lived "Cop Rock," songs will advance the plot. Based on BBC show, "Viva Blackpool." Airs 8 p.m. Sunday, against "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" and "The Simpsons," which also sometimes uses music to advance the plot.
--"Moonlight," CBS' only new detective series stars a vampire (newcomer Alex O'Loughlin). Maybe there's a crossover with ABC's "Pushing Daisies," about the guy who can bring people back to life with his touch? ("Moonlight" airs at 9 p.m. Friday.)
--"Kid Nation," CBS' new reality show, has 40 kids living for 40 days on their own to establish a new town in New Mexico. Sounds like a kid version of "Survivor?" It will air at 8 p.m. Wednesday.
Anything sound any good to you?

Sounds like Cane could be a winner in a different time slot, or maybe give Boston legal a run for its money.. What a cast!
Jimmy Smits, Rita Moreno and Hector Elizondo! Will definitely give that one a look-see.

Certainly disappointed with the cancellation of Jericho. It was a quality show that deserved a better fate.
The networks have taught me not to invest any time in nre shows because they are too trigger happy. I'll wait until something is established and catch up in season 2 on DVD. Goodbye The Class and Jericho.
count me in the number who are shaking their heads about the bomb dropping on Jericho. Agree with Anon 3:27, ABC did the same thing last season with Nightstalker. Unless your show is being gushed about on E.T . and Access Hollywood each night a la Despaerate Housewives, any new idea is doomed. Too bad. The dumbing down of America continues, no wonder they call it the "idiot box". Bring on the cavemen and the AFLAC duck.......
very disappointed about the cancellation of Jericho. It was the only show that I made sure I didn't miss every week! The mid season break really hurt the show but that is CBS's fault. Hopefully some cable channel will pickup Jericho, like SciFi.
Oh Look more crap programming....They got rid of Jericho, yet they keep Shark..CSI, Miami starring David "I graduated from the W. Shattner school of acting" Caruso, more reality TV and they're bringing on Moonlight about a Vampire...Is this the WB?
Can you tell I'm alittle bitter about the Jericho cancellation.
that'd be a great catch if someone could pick up Jericho like Sci-Fi, Spike, or the Law and Order Channel..I mean TNT.
Shark is a great show. I just hope the ratings stay up on sunday nights.
CBS Stinks! No new shows on that network interest me.
How bad was Jerico's ratings for them to cancel it?
I liked Moonlight ... back when it was "Forever Knight" after the late show.
Sheesh.
how can they nuke Jericho?its one of the best shows out there.maybe they think we arent "smart" enough to get it.Ive got my fingers crossed.maybe someone smart like the Scifi channel will pick Jericho up.CBS im ashamed of you,you play it safe and you will never hold cable back.
John, there is a lot of negative backlash over on the CBS.com Jericho message boards. Don't know if it will have any impact, but I would like to think it might. One of the more creative ideas is for viewers who are upset about it to send a bag of nuts to CBS executives, taking a page from the finale episode where Jake quoted General McAuliffe of Battle of the Bulge fame in response to the leader of the attackers from their neighbor town.
I know they claimed a drop in viewers from the first "season" to the second, but the long break was their doing so they could air "Armed and Famous", if I'm not mistaken. Also, they had 8 Million viewers the second half, going up against American Idol for crying out loud. That is really not too shabby, is it? I read where "24" had about that many viewers its frst year and look at it now. Don't know if there is any hope, but hopefully outraged fans will speak up.

here is an update on the uproar surrounding CBS decision:

check out this link to the Jericho forum on the network's website. Sounds like the hornets' nest has been disturbed, and is forcing CBS to react. There is an allegation in this thread about them removing a posting from one of the showrunners, Carol Barbee, stating that fans should keep the pressure on as it is having an effect.

Although I would not ordinarily voice my opinion about a television show, I believe this cancellation was based upon a poor understanding of audience viewing habits in a new media environment, given the proliferation of digital recording devices and the availability of online episodes. Additionally, experimenting with an extended mid-season hiatus rather than building viewership through airing repeats of the first half of the season was an ill-advised strategy. I understand the economic realities of network decisions and the importance of ratings, but Jericho's cancellation was not based on accurate data.
It would be a shame to trade cheap "reality TV" drivel for quality programming, especially when audiences' loyalty can so easily shift to other sources when they feel their intelligence has been insulted and their opinions have been disregarded.
