Less of Darryl Parks
I know some of you love him, and some of you hate him... But starting Saturday, you'll hear less of Darryl Parks. The opinionated WLW-AM operations manager loses an hour of his Saturday morning talk show to a paid program, the "Mutual Fund Show."
Parks will be "in the bunker" with Sensible Don for just two hours (
20 Comments:
Oh, they sandwich this fine show between Parks, who does not talk but yells , and McConnell with that dumb "weekend" show that is probably the most boring radio show on the planet.
Please say it ain't so!! "Mutual Fund Shows" are THE most boring, most objectionable, most run-for-the-dial type of radio.
You've GOT to be kidding....
INFOMERCIALS on daytime talk radio? This super stinks?
What is the deal with WLW...there are too many informercials on tv these days and NOW on talk radio.
Major Shark Jump for WLW and I do not like Parks either.
Bold New Programming!!!
Isn't that depressing.
I've caught the mutual fund show for a couple of mins, while scanning WTVN and HAS at noon on Sat and thought about my upcoming dental appointment.
I guess they will take in more money for that hour selling it than having live local programming.
I'd rather hear Bill Boshears talk about oil of oregano, lol.
Off topic, but John, could you please do some reporting on WeatheRate and its "certification" of Channel 9's forecast as most accurate. I really think there is a story to be done here!
How is a guy based in Arizona able to monitor weather information given on four TV stations in Cincinnati???
Which weather forecast is he watching? Afternoons, nights, mornings? How long is the monitoring process? One day, a week, a month? That's a lot of tapes to go through.
What is considered "accurate" on their part? Who guessed closest on when it would start raining, temperature, etc?
If 9 was most accurate, how close did 5, 12, and 19 get?
And most importantly - weather rat says it funds its own research, but sells licensing of its findings to recoup the costs. So it is in their interest to sell this information. That opens up a can of worms, because its very easy to massage numbers into "accuracy."
Its not like this certification comes from an established agency like the AMS or national weather service. This is from some guy who claims to have "patent pending" computer software that can analyze forecasts and actual conditions. Seriously, he needs a patent pending computer to do that? A middle schooler with Microsoft Excel could do that!
If Channel 9 is going to make "bold statements" as they themselves call their weather claims, I think its your duty as a media journalist to verify their accuracy.
Our 50,000 watt flame thrower is now starting to become a bastion for paid programming. Thanks Clear Channel!
Less Parks can not be a bad thing, but I guess you have to take the good (less Parks) with the bad: "Mutual Fund Shows".
Isn't that a scream? WLW plays repeat shows on weekend evenings and now is starting paid programming. Is this the future of radio? Anybody who has a buck can get on the air and babble for an hour? I wold expect that on a 1,000 watt day parter, but what an embarrassment to put that on a 50,000 watt, so-called full service station.
I would like to know how much of Jim Scott's morning show is repeated. It you listen long enough you hear segments repeated on the same day. And, then you also might hear a segment that was aired on an earlier day. I'm done with WLW
Liz
WLW stopped being a "full service" radio station a long long time ago. Now its nothing more than toilet minded talk show hosts and news every half hour that is basically repeat stories half hour after half hour. Sad commentary on today's radio world, especially in this town. If your are not part of the 18-34 crowd there is really nothing on the dial for you!! Sad.
Again, I say it: thank you, Randy Michaels, you piece of dirt!
Thanks for starting this entire radio consolidation tidal wave.
Radio as we knew it is now gone. Ruined.
But you, Randy, are now wealthy, and ain't that what matters...
I thought former consumer big-mouth Tom Sussi was a shoe-in at WLW. What happened? The guy's a natual. He has a face for radio, too!
Thank you Benjamin Hummel. (that is Randy Michaels real name) Consolidation has made trash out of radio and its a shame. Then, in this tiny little market its seems as though Clear Channel has a radio staion in every cubicle out there in Kenwood. All of the stations are trash. Thank God for XM or Sirius and PBS.
In response to the person wondering if Jim Scott Fitzgerald's morning show has some segments repeated. Probably, but have you ever noticed that on 99% of his so-called interviews that he never says hello or good-bye to the person being interviewed and then during the interview he makes little sounds like he is really listening. A real hoot! He needs to go too from this useless radio station.
Tom Sussi? Please! spare us.
WLW has probably learned the hard way that their dealings with WLWT are not so rosey. Once you get past the checkbook, what have they done for eachother? Are 5's ratings any better? Does a radio relationship really make a difference?
Think about this. What other radio market would have a 50,000 watt flame thrower put on a Saturday morning talk show hosted by a loud talking host, and a bus driver? Get real, this is proof this market is so bad. Sure WLW is number one but what else do we have to pick from?
Sussi was great and entertaining. Channel 5's ratings have plummeted since they stopped him from doing his bone spoofs and have dropped further since he left. Go Simpsons....
Well, I have to weigh in...
I think Darryl Parks is a really great talk show host and I think it's a blast to listen to him.
Really.
My only wish would be that we could hear him more, not less...
For you people who think it's such a "travesty" that a 50,000 watt station would run this Mutual Fund Show and that it could only happen here, once again you know nothing. This show airs on legendary monster signals such as:
WLS Chicago
WJR Detroit
WPHT Philadelphia
WTAM Cleveland
WTMJ Milwaukee
WBT Charlotte
KTRH Houston
WOAI San Antonio
WIOD Miami
WHAS Louisville
WWL New Orleans
WHAM Rochester
And, NO, they's not all Clear Channel stations.
