Dayna Eubanks Resigns From Ch. 12

Dayna Eubanks has resigned from WKRC-TV, the second anchor to leave Channel 12 in two weeks as the long stable Clear Channel station undergoes changes prior to being sold to Kansas City-based Newport Television.

Eubanks has a new job – and has her Symmes Township home on the market – but she won't say where she's headed.

"I can’t talk about it yet," she told me todayt. Eubanks, who came to Channel 12 from Detroit in 1994, has anchored the 4 p.m. news since its debut 10 years ago. She also anchors at noon.

Eubanks' last day is Friday. General Manager Chris Sehring also leaves Friday for a new job in a new city. (He also has refuses to talk about his next gig.) Saturday morning anchor Paul Adler left Sept. 1 for a Springfield, Mo., station closer to his hometown. And Clear Channel New VP Steve Minium, the former Ch 12 news director, has announced he will not be joining Newport Television.

Eubanks says a number of factors helped her make "a very, very difficult" decision to leave Chanel 12: Her son, Jay, just started his freshman year the University of Michigan; her contract expired Sept. 1; and the TV station is going through "a challenging time" awaiting new ownership.

"Jay is leaving, and I have chances to pursue something I've wanted to pursue for a while,"
Eubanks says.

The only hint she gives about her future is to say, "I'm very interested in new media." As daytime breaking news anchor, she anchored Local 12's Internet coverage of the David and Liz Carroll murder trials earlier this year.

The 1979 University of Kansas graduate has been honored for her involvement in many community organizations here. The single mother says she's thankful for the support of her church, friends and co-workers.

"This has truly been a remarkable experience here (at Channel 12), working with these people, and not just on the air," she says.

She also wanted to thank her noon and 4 p.m. viewers. "They are very loyal at 4 p.m., and we didn’t promote it much," she says.

News Director Elbert Tucker says he's "weighing several options" for replacing Eubanks and Adler.

Who do want to watch anchoring Channel 12 news at noon, 4 p.m. and Saturday morning?

How about that nice young Mr. Ley as 4pm anchor? He seems like a good newsman who'll give it to us straight....in the Randy Little tradition.

I can tell you this...when I saw "Smilin' Bob" the clown anchoring this past Saturday, I switched to channel 5. They need a real news anchor, not a fool anchoring that newscast.

I would love to see the morning reporter Jessica along with Shawn Ley. They are both young and seem like good news people. As for Bob, he's just having fun. God forbid people on television have a sense of humor. I for one enjoy watching people that seem to have fun. Good luck Dayna. You are a good newscaster and our family wishes you the best of luck in your new job.

I liked Shawn Ley when he anchored
weekends on 9. He would be a good
choice.

John,

What is up with the Mix 94.1 changes?

Two Words: Lisa Cornwell.

How come you never list what channel the CW is on? and its never in the Sunday TV guide? It's on 12.2.

My best to Dayna. I had friends that worked at KissFM when it was in Mt Auburn and got to meet Dayna on a couple of occasions. Super nice and professional woman.

Channel 12:
PLEASE hire MICHELLE HOPKINS from ch.5 to be your Noon and 4pm anchor.

Michelle Hopkins deserves to be an anchor somewhere! I can't believe that Ch.5 has her on the street as a general assignment reporter, considering all of her background doing the morning shows both at ch.5 & ch.9.

Michelle H. would be perfect to replace Dayna Eubanks.

John,
Did we find out what Lisa Cornwell's new role is at Channel 9 or did I miss it?!?!?!

I'm confused on that topic.

Thanks,

It appears the slashing has begun at 12. GM, two anchors gone. Who is next? Is the traffic clown the future for 12?

at 9/11/2007 9:12 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

The traffic clown? God no. He's so plastic he melts under the studio lights. Substance anyone??

No to Kim "the terminator" Moening!

I really enjoy Bob H. on the morning news. He brings life to the show, something that it seems most news channels are afraid to do. Life is too serious already. I think he does an excellent job when he fills in for John Lomax and think he is a great candidate for one of the open positions.

at 9/11/2007 10:12 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

There might be a reason Michelle was pulled from the anchor desk.

Aside from that - I think this blog is reaching in assuming there will be a replacement in the first place.

TV stations are looking to do more with less. Remember when weekend nights and mornings were two-anchor teams???

Herzog is a good guy. He'd do well to handle the 4pm spot.

Bob Herzog? Are you people really serious? Really? BOB?! No wonder local TV sucks.

I am one of Dayna's competitors and am glad to see she's heading to a new home. She is a classy and beautiful lady with a good heart and a good head on her shoulders. She'll be missed a great deal by a good many of us.
Dayna, all the best.

for weekends-larry davis

at 9/12/2007 2:39 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

I like Bob. He isn't stale like some of the others. He keeps it interesting. He would be a good morning show anchor.

at 9/12/2007 2:51 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Since this has gotten off topic... and by the way Bob H is too cheesy for news - but maybe he could do weather... how about Family Guy every night on FOX19! Maybe they could move it to 11pm then we wouldn't have to watch ANY of the infotainment faux news on 5,9 and 12.

at 9/12/2007 4:25 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

To the poster that suggested "12 is becoming the new 5 with a revolving door." Let's see the GM leaves, Minium is out, and Dana and Paul take new jobs. That somehow makes 12 the new 5. Come on, that's less turnover than in channel 5's weather department. Yes 12 is going through some changes. Your going to see some new faces, but the familiar ones will still be there. Joe Webb, Jeff Hirsh, Deb Dixon, Rich Jaffe, Shawn Ley, Anna, John, Cammy, Jessica, Larry, Paula, Howard, Rob, Kit, Tim, Steve, Jeff, Brad, they will all be there. The same people viewers enjoy will continue to be welcomed into their homes nightly. In the end viewers will still get solid news, weather, and sports from a great group of professionals. If 12 is the new "revolving door" as you suggest then why do folks from 5 always apply for the openings?

when is lisa cornwell's new job going to be announced. It was supposed to be announced last week.

With all the snarky comments about Bob Herzog left on this blog, I just wanted to point out that 12 has hired an unqualified, entertainment-oriented, variety- and game-show host in its past...about 30 years ago, guy by the name of...Clooney, I think?

That was an obvious mistake, wasn't it? For that matter, didn't 9 hire Michael Flannery from a stand-up comedy career?

Just sayin', that's all.

Liz Bonis News Anchor

My days of watching news WILL be over

at 9/13/2007 9:06 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Bring back Denae D'Arcy. She was by far the best up and coming talent in this market and Ch. 12 was stupid in letting her get away. She needed a greater role, like replacing boring Kit Andrews on the 6 and 11 news.

at 9/13/2007 9:30 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

We like Bob Herzog, and I think he's perfect in his role there.
My husband and I love how energetic Shawn Ley is every night and wonder why 12 doesn't utilize him more???

at 9/13/2007 10:10 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Bob Herzog is absolutely one of the most painful to watch an unqualified people I have ever seen at an anchor desk. The key word when delivering news is CREDIBILITY. He has none. Enough said.

at 9/13/2007 10:13 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Just to clear up any confusion with the 5 & 12 comparisions.

5 is a "revolving door" station. The station hires people who are not from Cincinnati with no intention of making this their home. Folks do their time there in hopes of moving on to bigger and better things.

12 is experiencing a "mass exodus." This is not uncommon when a station is bought and sold. Several high profile people leave, all at once. This is generally a temporary phenomenon.

at 9/13/2007 10:50 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Actually 19 hired Flannery from a stand-up career. 9 just hired him from 19. The difference is Clooney stopped being a game show host when he became a serious newsman. Bob is still doing the same cornball act he did at 64.

at 9/13/2007 10:53 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Liz Bonis . Please dont wish that on anyone.

at 9/13/2007 4:38 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Imagine a new main anchor team for 12: Bobby H, Liz Bonus, Mitzi Oxford, and Solomon Wilcots.

at 9/14/2007 8:28 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Have Channel 5 buy out Todd Dykes' contract he would do good at that early evening time slot

at 9/14/2007 8:33 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

I think Bob did an excellent job! He's a great addition to the news desk!

at 9/14/2007 4:48 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

The only reason I have ever tuned into 12's newscasts was because of Dayna Eubanks. She is classy, energetic and entertaining. She will be sorely missed in my household. Please do not place Shaun Ley at the anchor desk. He adlibs unnecessarily and "talks" too much with his hands. It is extremely distracting.

at 9/14/2007 8:05 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Denae D'Arcy was great. She left to go to school over in London England. She is still over there and I believe doing freelance work.

PS.

Bob H. is good for 12. He keeps things light and has a great attitude. We enjoy watching him on 12.

at 9/15/2007 12:38 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

It will be hard to replace Dayna. But Channel 12, specificially Elbert Tucker, if you are reading, here are my thoughts/options:

a) Anna-Noon; Cammy-4pm
b) Paula Toti-both Noon & 4pm; Dennison Keller-weekend evenings (I think Paula deserves a promotion..she's like the longest-running weekend anchor I've ever seen...she's been doing weekends for like 10 years!!!)
c) Assemble a new anchor team at Noon-Sasha & Shawn Ley, but NOT Shawn Ley by himself
d) HIRE MICHELLE HOPKINS...she would be an AWESOME replacement for Dayna, and she deserves to be back in the anchor seat rather than street-reporting
e) Anna-Noon; Kit-4 p.m. Kit needs more air-time

Whatever you do, don't put Bob Herzog, Sasha Rionda (by herself), or Jen Daulton in the Noon/4pm spots.

Thanks for listening!!

Bob Herzog has potential. However, in this age when competency matters...he has none. He has no academic training in journalism, his arcane stints at 64 don't help, and his on camera affect seems robotic and artificial. On the other hand, if he is serious about continuing in television news he would do well to transfer to a smaller market or plead with his news director at WKRC to invest in a good talent coach(es). Again, he has potential but someone needs to help shape it for him.

at 9/16/2007 11:21 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Best wishes to Dayna Eubanks and thank you for good solid thirteen years. In most markets that is a very long run. I enjoy the Channel 12 morning show, all of them John and Anna, Steve for weather, and Bob for traffic and The Cooler trading with Anna. I doubt Bob has any anchor aspirations, but I am happy to see him with a role on the morning program.

I don't see the noon and four shows. Over the years though I was able to see Dayna Eubanks in many capacities. Always professional and warm. It is a good time for a change for her in her personal life. I'm sure the silence is a contractual thing.

Randy Little works full time at NKU. I believe he has a radio role early in the morning somewhere.

at 9/16/2007 11:39 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

i think that randy would love to be back on tv bt i dont think he wold go back to 12 afer all i dont think it was a happy parting. i liked paul adler and dayna because of soothing voices so lets have jessica anchor at noon and 4 and maybe if shaun can speak softly saturday morning but definately NOT Carnival Bob Herzog

at 9/17/2007 11:07 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

I THINK DAYNA AS A GREAT REPORTER ON 4 OCLOCK NEWS...GOOD LUCK! DAYNA.AS A REPLACEMENT I TRUELY BELIEVE DAVE BURCHELL WOULD BE A GREAT REPLACEMENT HE IS VERY CHEERY AND HAS GOOD PERSONALITY.

at 9/18/2007 2:03 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

why do you people keep calling him carnival Bob? As far as I can see he's doing a great job. You guys are just afraid of change. He has fun with what he does, but never compromises the seriousness of a story. I say give him a chance, and after a while, all of you will be on the Bob Herzog bandwagon!

at 9/18/2007 5:20 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

He reminds me of a carnival barker thats why i dubbed him carnival bob he is NOT easyon the ears thats why i hit the mute button when he speaks

at 9/18/2007 8:33 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Bob is plastic and artificial. Looks like he's always trying to humorously imitate news pioneers from the 50s and 60s.

at 9/19/2007 8:37 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Bob is good for what he does. Keep him there. He is NOT an anchor, and you know it. Monkeys dance - they don't turn the crank on the organ.

at 9/19/2007 8:47 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

When have you heard him use a carnival barker voice for a story, besides maybe the Cooler? Oh wait, you wouldn't have, cause you don't listen to him. Kinda hard to be annoyed by someones voice is you can't hear them !

at 9/19/2007 9:00 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

You're right he does resemble a carnival barker! lol

at 9/21/2007 12:19 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Liz Bonis would drive me crazy! Her bug eyes and the way she draaaaaws out the end of her sentences will put me over the edgggggggge! Let's get someone who isn't trying to look like she's still in her early 30's...but isn't.

at 9/21/2007 3:02 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Liz Bonis calls women "girls" and "chicks." I am a 40 year old woman, and haven't been a girl in 26 years, nor do I cluck and lay eggs. Please, let's get someone a bit more politically correct for our news casts.

at 10/08/2007 9:14 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Don't you mean Liz Bonis will push you over the Medical Edggggge? LOL. I knew there something bizarre about her speech but could never put my finger on it. I can't help but laugh when I hear itttttt.

I am very sad to see Dayna Eubanks leave.....She had so much class and brains. She was a true professional. Local 12 was very fortunate to have her in an anchor chair. She was known for so many positive things within the Cincinnati area. She will be sorely missed. I am sure that with the amount of talent she has. She will see much success in whatever direction she will go.
Dayna gave those of us not under 25
a true role model. I appreciate the fact that with Dayna you knew you were hearing news from someone you trusted. Dayna we will miss you but look forward to seeing you again very soon.

at 4/16/2008 10:11 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Congrats, Dayna and best wishes to you. From what I hear, several of Channel 12's best people have left because the news director doesn't take care of his on-air talent. The favorites around there are the producers and he doesn't try to hide it. I think Bob H. is a nice guy but not meant for tv news in a larger market like Cincinnati. News should have light moments but the on-air NEWS people should deliver those light moments, not be a distraction or entertainer.
Also - good luck to Sasaha Rionda. She also moved on to better things.
