Channel 5 Swaps Morning Anchors

Weekend anchor Jonathan Hawgood brings his bubbly personality to the weekday "News 5 Today" starting Monday. Hawgood switches chairs with Todd Dykes, who moves to weekends on Oct. 27.

But viewers will start to see changes tomorrow. Lisa Cooney begins a four-week personal leave Thursday to deal with a family illness. She explained to viewers today that she is taking her 11-year-old daughter Avery to the Dead Sea in Jordan for treatment of severe psoriasis, a chronic skin disease characterized by thick, scaly, itchy patches. "There is no cure, and we have gone through many treatments... We have tried everything," she says. So they're going to try climate therapy near the Dead Sea, with its high salt and mineral content. See the video today at http://www.wlwt.com

New morning reporter Kristina Cruise from WVIR-TV in Charlottesville, Va. -- who started work today at Channel 5 -- will co-anchor during Cooney’s absence. She has anchoring experience in Charlottesville.

Dykes, hired as a reporter in 2002, has co-anchored the weekday morning show since October 2003. He says he's "somewhat disappointed by the move because I've thoroughly enjoyed working with Lisa, Eric Green and Pete Scalia (and all the other folks connected with our morning news team, past and present). Despite the crazy hours, it's been a real privilege to work with so many professionals while doing a job I love." He will be a reporter three days a week, when not doing weekends with meteorologist Randi Rico.

The Dykes-Cooney-Green team had been together only since January, after Derek Beasley was promoted to replace chief meteorologist Jim O'Brien. Rico has worked with Hawgood since March.

I wonder how Randi Rico is going to take this news as her and Jonathan seem to have a thing going on the weekend news? I wonder if Todd will stand like "right" next to Randi when they are talking about the weekend weather like Jonathan used to do. She is a bubbly little thing.

I don't get this one myself. I think Jonathan H. is so incredibly self-important and snarky that I can't stand to watch him. Do we really need him to wax poetic over every single goofy shot from the Channel 5 tower camera? Randi is fine, though. Good luck to Lisa and her family.

Dykes was the sole reason I would wake up at 5 am to watch the news...something that's not always easy to do. He provided viewers with the news in a professional manner and had great chemistry with rest of the morning team. He's also an active figure in the community, making appearances at the Leukemia foundation and Buddy walk which benefits children with Down Syndrome this past year. The guy's a saint as far as I'm concerned. I hope he comes back to the morning show, because I don't think the morning team will be the same.

Hawgood is the best they can do?
Keis, you mean to tell me the professionals at 5 look at the talent they have, the talent that is out there and say: "Hawgood! He's our man!" - He is so small time, small town ... the purest version of a male air-head, ever.
I saw him one time on a Saturday morning and thought he had won a contest to get his job. He can't do anything about his ears, but he can do somethign about his strip-club d-j persona.
I simply cannont stand that guy.
Wow.
Small town tv. unreal.

Not so sure this is the best decision for Channel 5. The rapport with Dykes and Cooney provides major stability for the morning news---something this station really struggles with in other areas. He is well-seasoned and polished.....not what I observe with Jonathan Hawgood. They may be swapping morning anchors, but I will be swapping stations all together.

Funny - Channel 5 had killer morning show ratings last year, with Todd, Lisa, Derek and Pete. They shake that up, and the numbers go straight down the toilet. So who do they blame for their own stupid mistake? Throw a dart and pick someone - Todd lost. What a crock. Seems to be the way things go over there.

A agree about Hawgood. A good reporter, too tongue-in-cheek to anchor every day. Todd and Lisa were a good pairing, with the traffic guy lightening things up a bit.

There's a story about Lisa Cooney and her daughter on the WLWT web site. Best of luck to both of them. What an incredible experience! I hope it works out for her.

And I hope the changews work for channel 5, although that seems to be what they're all about - constant change, when they don't get immediate results. It's kind of like punching someone in the face, and then acting surprised when they get pissed. Good luck to all involved!

Todd and Lisa are the reason I have been tuning into Channel 5 for the last year. Todd stands for character and displays a genuine interest and sincerity about our community. He is honest and direct. Channel 5 needs to recognize his professionalism and stop trying to change something that is working. Channel 5 just gave me a reason to switch stations.

I can't believe this is happening. I do not watch channel 5 news on the week-ends because of how boring Johnathan Hawgood is. He addresses his audience as if they are a bunch of kindergarten kids. He also flirts with Randi in a way that is sickening. I watch channel 5 news during the week because of Todd Dykes. His professionalism can't be beat. Johnathan can never match up. You just lost a loyal viewer for sure.

I personally thought Jonathan Hawgood annoyed Randi Rico...just look at how stiff she'd get whenever he'd lay one of his dry humor jokes on her, and how much more relaxed she seems when someone else is anchoring. He's way too perky for morning news anyway.

I am sad to see Todd go. He has integrity and is a solid person. He seems like someone you can count on, not flashy and fake. I wish him well. I know he is very involved in the community and a stand up person. I am suprised by some of nasty comments posted about both him and Hawgood. Please remember these are real people and they have families. Todd, if you are reading this, You are AWESOME!

John, you are doing a great public service here finally mentioning one of News 5's worst hires ever.
John Hawgood ... I'm sorry, maybe he's a decent guy, but we're talking business here.
News 5 wants my business and they'll never get it.
I heard him making FUN of their main anchors once and I was so turned off ... thank you for finally brining him up so we can rip him.
Ugh, that voice!
That putz personality!
ANYONE at 5 would be better than Johnny Hawgood ... we just can't express enough how he is Cincinnati's worst wanna-be reporter.

5 has Sandra (Who is just way too professional for this market) and Sheree.
I like them.
That's it.

Todd was fine. Very bland, very Cincinnati.

This other guy?
Horrid.
He doesn't seem to be able to pull off live-shots and must scrip his horrible ill timed humor when he's actually reading off the prompter.
Good move, TV5, take your most obnoxious person and show him more ... I will never watch that small time guy ... ick ..

Todd Dykes is the reason I gave Channel 5 a try, after years of watching channel 9. My daughter recommended the morning team on channel 5, and I immediately became a fan. The chemistry between Todd, Lisa, Derek, and Pete is wonderful. I hope you'll reconsider; but if not....channel 9 news is still on the air.

Channel 5 you blew it this time. Way to take charge and break up an anchoring team team that finally clicked! For what reason? We all know you are trying to play the ratings game but guess what - you lose. You lose respect, viewers and a talented steadfast anchor who actually cared enough about his community to do it right. Who are you trying to kid? Tell me it's April Fools day - no - then you must be the fool.

You've got to be kidding....Jonathan Hawgood....???
You've lost me. I bet the other stations are cheering cause they sure are going to be gaining more viewers now in the morning!

at 10/17/2007 5:41 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

5 is doing this so they can have a local morning team. Hawgood grew up here so did lisa and pete. 5 will promo the heck out of local people anchoring the newscasts.

This move will make me avoid Channel 5 in the morning. Todd was always upbeat and happy (a chore that early in the morning for anyone) and he was the sole reason I ever watched Channel 5's morning news. Now that he is gone, I will be watching something else. I think it would be funny if weekend ratings spiked because all Todd's loyal fans tuned in to see him...and what would Channel 5 say then? bad move, Chennel Five...very bad move.

at 10/17/2007 6:33 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Todd Dykes is an active member of the our community. His job does not demand community service of him but he is always willing to lend a helping hand, even with the insane hours of a morning show host. He is genuine and sincere on camera. I was converted from Channel 12 because of the interaction between the morning team. If Channel 5 wants to tout the hometown kids, I would be embarassed to say Hawgood is the best Cincinnati has to offer. Todd I hope your move doesn't quench your devotion to our community. Groups in our area benefit greatly from your generosity.

Channel 5 what are you thinking?? Todd Dykes is a stand up guy and a great anchor. The mistake at ch 5 is not Todd Dykes it's repetitive programming. Good bye Channel 5 in the morning and hello 19.

The current news team on Channel 5 is the first thing I watch each morning. One main reason is Todd Dykes. I have had the pleasure of meeting him a few times and really enjoy his company. He is tops as an anchor and the chemistry of the morning team is real and personal, thanks to Todd. I have also seen Todd in community service roles, as an emcee for Relay for Life and a champion for other causes. I want to see news anchors who are involved in the community...perhaps I will wake up to channel 9 or 12 from now on...wake up Channel 5! WLS

Channel 5 did the SAME thing with Kristen Cornett---it's just not fair to Todd Dykes!!!!

Remember when Kristen Cornett was the Mon-Fri morning meteorologist, then they DEMOTED her to weekends and put Susanne Horgan on weekday mornings?!?!? Then, Susanne ended up leaving town anyway!!!

Channel 5 sure knows how to treat their veteran employees right, don't they? Look at poor John Bateman. He's been there the LONGEST out of all of the Channel 5 meteorologists, and he has always held the worst shift---weekend evenings!!

WLWT, you have made a terrible mistake. I like Todd Dykes; he is genuine and sincere. He doesn't seem to be faking it when he delivers the news. Who cares whether or not he's "local"? He does more charity work here than most people I know who are Cincy born and bred. He has volunteered with my county's Relay for Life for the American Cancer Society for two years now. And that's just one little charity event among many that he does.

I HATE when fake, trying-too-hard anchors deliver my news. Who says morning anchors have to be hyperactive puppies? Can't we just have sincere, real people deliver our news?

I will no longer be watching channel 5 morning news on weekdays.

I would like to see Pat Barry given a shot here. Why not bring back one of the team members who made this station solid!

at 10/18/2007 9:22 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

The only negative thing I have to say about Hawgood is that he tends to lead other anchors into very awkward moments. He pushed a reporter to predict the final score of a Bengals game one morning three times, while she obviously had no idea what a football score would be! If he can avoid pressing too hard when he's cross-talking with others, he'll be just fine.

This is a disaster. I hope the big wigs at channel 5 realize what a mistake they are making. Todd Dykes is the morning news. His a professional in the truest sense of the word. I guess I have a reason to tune into channel 9 now during the week. No love or loyalty from channel 5. Maybe they should think of canning the person who came up with this brilliant idea.

at 10/18/2007 9:40 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Todd Dykes is the reason we tune in every morning. Todd has a great sense of humor, but presents serious in an appropriate manner too.

Given the general quality of local morning news, Todd is a breath of fresh air... looks like I will only be tuning to 5 on the weekends. I hope the channel reconsiders this move seriously.

at 10/18/2007 9:45 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Channel 9 - here I come!!!! Todd Dykes is ONLY reason why I would watch Channel 5 in the mornings. The chemistry of that morning crew was incredible because of him. Todd is an outstanding leader in the community and WONDERFUL representative for Channel 5 in all his endeavors. His professionalism, loyalty and dedication are obvious to all who have seen him on and off the air.

Only one thing to say - Derek said it would be like this.

at 10/18/2007 1:01 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

My shock and dismay at this decision is overwhelming. Not only is Mr.Dykes a talented newscaster, he brings an "American as apple-pie" refreshing approach. He puts on no airs and doesn't try to be overly dramatic. He does his job and he does it well. It is true humor when the current morning cast plays off of one another with the natural chemistry that they have. They aren't on the show to perform as circus clowns; they are presenting serious news and happenings of our area. When I hear news of a convicted rapist or pedophile being released,or one of our youth being killed in Iraq, I don't want a hearty laugh to go with it.
I guess if what they wanted was a circus clown they made a good pick with Hawgood. His weekend "performances" are not professional. Hawgood will not last mark my words. He doesn't have what it takes.

I used to work with Todd Dykes in the mornings, and I can tell you that he is just as nice as he appears on television! The guy doesn't have a mean bone in his body, he's smart and funny, and he works his tail off. No easy feat in an environment full of back-biting, politics and paranoia. He's also jumped through every hoop management put in front of him to get that anchor job, but he never got the time in to make a real impression in the ratings. Not his fault, just more knee-jerk decision-making by the powers-that-shouldn't-be: "What, you say a focus group of 12 people (with nothing better to do than be in a focus group) didn't fall all over themselves to praise Todd? Well, get him off that anchor desk now!"
He deserves better treatment, but if recent history plays out, he'll land a much better job soon! Good luck, Todd! I hope you've read all of these comments, because you deserve them. Sorry it didn't help save you on the morning show.

at 10/18/2007 5:24 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

I have read all of the comments and appreciate the insights from someone who worked there in the morning. It is incredible that Channel Five executives CONTINUE to get it wrong. If you treat a talented, hard-working professional like Todd Dykes like this, what does this say about you as a decison-maker? Where is the accountability for not promoting the morning team they way they should have over the past couple of years? I hope you realize how many people throughout the area you just lost as loyal viewers with this idiotic move...simply stupid - seems to be a weak attempt to sacrifice someone to save your own tail. Read the comments above - and do something to respond to people who tune in for one reason in the mornings...to begin their day with people who are genuine and real (like Lisa and Todd). Get a clue about what the people really want or you will continue to slide in the ratings...and perhaps better decisons will be made about who should be running the station.

I hope someone forwards these to the executives and 9, 12 and 19...Mr. Dykes - this should let you know what the people of Cincy think of you. Take it to heart and continue to do the right thing. You seem to be a very good man. You will be missed in the mornings...so I hope I can begin watching you on another station soon.

Channel 5, this decision is detrimental to your growing network. Finally you've given us a pair of compatible & strong anchors & now Todd is gone?
Hawgood has the personality of a college frat boy with no loyalty to his viewers or Cincinnati.
Looks like I'll be tuning into watch Rob & Sheila, who I watched prior to the Dykes & Cooney ensemble.
- a once loyal viewer

Channel 5, please reconsider! Todd Dykes is a man that we trust to deliver the news. He is genuine, sincere and most importantly a generous man that works countless charity events with a sincere desire to make a difference in our community. You don't have to be FROM Cincinnati to love and make a difference IN Cincinnati.
The Dykes/Cooney team is my pick for morning news........ maybe it's time to pick a new morning news channel.

I’m an OH native who went to college in Cincy, lives out of state now, but returns periodically. When in town I always check the morning news with Todd Dykes and Lisa Cooney on Channel 5. I can’t believe the station management is going to replace Todd, who has so much personality, charm, good looks and most importantly true professionalism. Plus he and Lisa appear to have great rapport together. The posting about Todd being stiff and humorless is so incredibly wrong. I’m sure that station ratings will reflect the mistake of this decision. Todd needs to move to a station that recognizes real talent. Best of luck Todd! And success to Lisa and her daughter seeking a cure in Jordan. KTC

How about a post about the "severe" weather on Thursday.

I thought it was nice that 19 didn't cut into the ALCS... I thought it was very commendable by FOX19 to only do the push back.

Thoughts?

Are you serious..... Hawgood is a joke! His perky, mamby-pamby persona is enough to make me puke.... I try and watch the 5 News on weekends, but his sappy, stupid attempts at humour are a huge turn off. Poor Randi - She appears to be a sweetheart... I don't know how she stood it for so long standing next to him. He is an Indian Hill boy, isn't he?? He worked the weeekned of his high school reunion and was saying hi to all his yuppy boys from the night before. What a joke...

I watched Todd tell his audience today about the switch to week-ends. Once again, he handled it very professionally. Always looking at the positive side, more sleep for him. I still don't think the public was given a plausible reason for this change.

at 10/19/2007 9:12 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Too many changes for Channel 5 news teams. Maybe the change needs to be higher up. The GM needs to get in touch with what the people of Cinti really want and need to improve his ratings.

at 10/19/2007 11:17 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

I feel bad for Johnathan. He is being roasted and raked over the coals because of a GM decision to switch anchors. Life changes which are controlled by our jobs are difficult enough to deal with without adding public criticism. He was probably happy with the week-end job. It fit his personality. Now his self esteem is being destroyed. As far as week-end ratings go, channel 5 is the only channel which is on all morning.

Is no one else a bit shocked that 5 is bringing in someone from some super-small market and starting her on the anchor desk as a fill-in? There was no one qualified that was already in-house? That doesn't say much for their station.

at 10/19/2007 4:33 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Channel 5 management is clearly clueless. I have nothing against Jonathan and I wish him the best in the position. However, it's too bad that Todd is getting a raw deal. He's a polished professional and deserves better. It is a business, though, a business that's becoming more and more disappointing by the day. That's why the new young lady from the really small market is getting a chance to anchor. The people who run the business make decisions based on who they like to look at. Unfortunately, it's not always the most qualified for the job. I feel sorry for the Channel 5 news staff. Hang in there, Todd...and Jonathan, it's not your fault.

at 10/19/2007 5:50 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

I agree...this probably isn't about Hawgood (unless he manipulated executives to get the job...we will probably never know that)...the real shame is the quietness from the people who made the decision. They should be able to see that people are truly not happy about the way such a seemingly bright, nice and talented young man has been treated here - and I agree, I saw the sign-off today and it was first-class and professional (something we have come to expect from Dykes). Maybe the same guy who decided to drop the top-five-at-five poll needs to take a look at this - because if the move for Dykes was his brilliant decision (and I assume it was), perhaps some explanation about this is due as well. I believe you will hear from many others next week when people tune in and realize what has happened...I hope so anyway. Perhaps a little accountability should land where it belongs in that station for once!

I can't believe the latest stupid decision at Channel 5! Actually, I shouldn't be surprised. It seems to be the only kind of decision you people make. Why stop with Todd? How about changing to Channel 6? That's the only way you'll get a bigger number in ratings! I loved waking up to Todd and Lisa & Co. They got along so well, and struck a good balance between humor and seriousness. I'm sorry for Lisa, because it will be a big shock trying to anchor with Jonathan. Todd was the perfect anchor--he knows what he's talking about, and
I trust him. I want a news show, not morning cartoons! So I'll be watching another channel during the week. It's not good for Todd, but I'm happy for me because now I will be able to see a real news show on weekends. Todd, I'm sorry the execs don't appreciate you, but many of us in the community certainly do. We appreciate your honesty, integrity, next-door neighbor appeal, and your community involvement. You are too good for Channel 5, but you have dealt with this change as the true professional that you are. Good luck to you, and I'll be watching you wherever you are as long as you're in this area.

Johnathan was very consistent today when he announced he would make a change from week-ends to week days. Very immature and unprofessional for a news anchor man.Ha Ha Ha, everything is always a joke to him, or was it his childish way of saying I win? Today's news is nothing to be laughed at or taken lightly. You never see this kind of behavior from the highly regarded world news teams. He needs to grow up and address his audience as adults instead of children if he expects to bring success to Channel 5.

The joke is that no one will watch after Monday. I bet there will be some upset viewers who did not see the announcements nor do they read this website and will be annoyed when they wake up without Todd and Lisa. Expect 5's ratings to drop even more. Keis, when the ratings come out, let us know so we can all have a hearty laugh together. Good luck to TOdd and Lisa

I have never watched a more professionsl, dignified and sincere young man on any of the news channels in the Cincinnati area or any other areas for that matter than Todd Dykes. Why in the name of Heavens is Channel 5 removing Todd as the morning anchor when he is one of the best ever?

I have no idea how well or poorly Jon Hawgood did, becuase I refuse to watch. I called earlier today to speak with the news director and they will not give a reason as to why Todd was switched. They are too stubborn to realize their mistake.

I like Todd and Johnathan. I just like them in their past roles. During the week I need a serious anchor man. I have to get myself and the kids ready to go out the door by 7a.m. and I need facts and professionalism. On the week-ends the light hearted humor is what I need to help me relax from a hectic week. Switch back for a busy working mom's sanity.

I agree with the very first comment. Jonathan certainly had a flirting thing going on with Randi Rico and the way she'd look at him showed she enjoyed every minute of it.
Seriously though, carrying the weekend slot essentially solo is different than working as part of a team. I hope people will give Hawgood a chance to fit in before they tune out. I agree that his style fit the weekend broadcasts perfectly and he will have to adapt to fit in on weekdays. But David Rose did it well and so can he.
And though I agree it was wrong to single out Todd Dykes for Channel 5's disappointing ratings, all Hawgood did was accept the promotion. He is certainly not to blame for what happened to Todd Dykes.
I'd rather see Courtis Fuller paired with Lisa Cooney, Todd join the ladies on the evening broadcasts and Jonathan and Randi return to their "Office" style flirting.

Sorry to see the switch of Todd Dykes and Jonathan Hawgood. I looked forward to waking up at 5 a.m. to the team of Todd, Lisa, Pete and Eric. Great chemistry!Got my day off to a great start. Jonathan was good for the weekends and as a reporter. Think we may lose Todd over this move. Channel 5 just can't seem to see a good thing and stay with it. New gal seems still wet behind the ears.

The new person that anchors at Channel 5 and Anna Townsend from Channel 12 should open their own television news service. They both look 12 years old!!!

I have been away and at first thought maybe Todd was on vacation. Then on checking this site, I find his slot has been switched with Hawgood's. What a mistake! To me, Hawgood is an arrogant schmuck. Whereas, Todd has been nothing less than professional and not the least bit arrogant. I will vote with my remote and watch a different news channel.

When I first saw Hawgood on the morning news last week, I thought SURELY he is just filling in for Todd. But today I searched the internet to see what was going on. Couldn't believe Todd had been pushed to this position. I stomached Hawgood on weekends because I think what channel 9 and 12 offer is even worse. I will never watch channel 5 weekdays while Hawgood is there. But now I can enjoy the weekend news.

I can't believe Ch. 5 moved Todd Dykes to weekends. I don't watch Ch. 5 on weekends because Jonathon Hawgood is terrible. He is always learing at whatever female is around and seems to lack experienced. I also don't like the new female anchor filling in for Lisa. She looks very stiff on air. She was in the field the other day. I hope she stays there. Please bring back Todd Dykes to weekdays. Maybe the problem isn't with the anchors, but the content of the news.

I am very upset that Jonathan has been moved from the weekend news. I enjoyed watching him. I do not watch Ch. 5 during the week, only on the weekend. I looked forward to watching Jonathan each week as I found his humor entertaining and refreshing. Todd is a stiff.

Well, I found this forum when I was trying to find any kind of info on Hawgood the Goober. I think posting will finally let me vent about that!
There is no possible way that Hawgood studies how he actually looks and acts on camera. It is very uncomfortable to watch. It isn't just the "geek next door" ear issue (and let's face it - when you are on camera, you have to look good to stay there), but his interaction with Lisa is creepy. If you notice, when someone else starts reading, he twists his body around, starts to bite his lower lip, stares down her chest, and nods at each word like he's the teacher's pet. While other co-anchors might tip their head towards the other when they are delivering the news, he just seems to bring it to a whole creepy level with his entire body actions.
I've had to give up on the Channel 5 morning show. I really liked the Lisa and Todd team. At first I thought Todd was a little to stiff, but he did deliver the news and report in a very professional and honest manner. That's more than I can say for both Hawgood and "Pete the Traffice Robot." Someone needs to sit him down and explain that constant meth-like hand and body movements are very distracting. His attempts at humor really go flat, his arms and hands are all over the place and his body language just screams "LOOK AT ME! I'M TRYING TO BE NOTICED TO GET OUT OF THIS TOWN!" Sorry to burst his bubble, but he's a traffic guy who reads the lines that someone feeds him. Pete, let's face it...this isn't Los Angeles, Atlanta, NYC and DC - a six-year-old can figure out the traffic in this city.
I'll watch the news sites and when I read that Channel 5 has removed those two, I'll give their new team a chance. Until then, sorry, but especially Hawgood has no good reason to be doing the news in that childish and uncomfortable way of his. Send "Lurch" home.
