UC's electronic media students at CCM must have been thrilled to see local TV news crews covering the annual black-tie student awards ceremony last night -- until they saw the 11 p.m. news.
Channel 12 showed Channel 12 General Manager Chris Sehring at the podium, and a quick sweep of the banquet goers at Northern Kentucky Convention Center.
Channel 9 showed Channel 9 anchor Clyde Gray, who received an award, and Channel 9 anchor Carol Williams, Channel 9 meteorologist Steve Raleigh and Channel 9 sports anchor Dennis Janson.
Neither station named any of the student winners at the 20th annual Frederic W. Ziv Awards.
But we saw the station executives and anchors. How many times have you seen more of Carol, Clyde or Cammy instead of those honored at community events? Isn't that how TV stations usually cover award-winning news?

Easy folks. The reason - cincinnati has no award winning news.
Yes. Reader weasels are more important than talent if the advertising gurus say so.
As a graduate of CCM, I'm disappointed. More and more, local TV news has become a clearing house for the promotions efforts of the stations and their networks. Whatever happened to covering the news? Now all we get is 8 minutes of police blotter, 5 minutes of promos, a 30-second weather report streched out to 2 minutes, and commercials. Of course, Al Schottlekotte would have ignored the CCM event altogether (not bloody enough). Those were the days! So many pony keg robberies, so little time...
Schottelkotte would not have ignored it. If you remember, he had a dedicated segment on Monday's 6pm news devoted to schools and educational programs. (that was the same time block that Jack Fogarty would do his commentary, the man on the street "televiews on the news", etc.)
Kudos to channel 9 this week, with severe weather around town and Steve Raleigh was only permitted a 30 second window without preempting ANY network programming. YEAH!!!!
I agree with WNOP. If CIN wants to do it right, revive the Ark.
Please note that nowhere in John's blog does he mention the winners either.
At Local 12, it's called a Golden Hammer. Anytime the GM, Rob, Kit, Cammy or anyone else of "importance" from the station have a public appearance, the news department MUST shoot and air it.
It doesn't matter if the event has any news value. As long as their faces are on TV, that's all that matters... who cares if you mention anything important about the event!
These events are put into the news coverage file folder with a hammer drawn on them, highlighted with a yellow highlighter to signify their importance! How lame!

Why don't you use your CCM degree to team up with Kiese and start your own TV station. You can call it "Ziv-Vision" and Manfred Wolfrum can be your anchorman!

Local news = lots of car commercials with some "if it bleeds, it leads" news. Lots of promos and the occasional "snow" forecast that turns out to flurries and feeble snow showers...
Whatever happened to the golden galaxy awards that helped high school students? Didn't channel 9 and the post used to help with scholarships?
