Fingers and Jones Take Over Burbank Slot

Eddie Fingers and Tracy Jones finally took over the old Gary Burbank slot at 4:25 p.m. today.

They put an end to the stunts – the hyped parade of guest hosts 3-6 p.m. since last Wednesday – by replacing Bill Cunningham and Bill "Seg" Dennison doing the afternoon drive show today.

Cunningham came on the air at 3 p.m. telling listeners he had spent his vacation at Clear Channel HQ in San Antonio (not Florida), and signed a "five-year, guaranteed bonus-ladened contract to be on from noon to 6 p.m." He gave up the scam at 4:25 p.m., and introduced Fingers and Jones.

Fingers, 50, morning host at sister WEBN-FM for 22 years, had filled in for Burbank on and off over the years. Jones, 46, has hosted WLW-AM's weekend Cincinnati Reds post-game call-in shows. He has never done a full-time weekday radio show.

So what do you think of WLW-AM's choice to replace Burbank?

They are terrible. Tracy has spent the time talking about himself.
BOOOOOOOOOOORRRRRRRRRRRIIIIIIINNNG.

Bring back the reruns of Gary.

I think it's a great choice and the delay work perfectly it got everybody talking. Exactly what they wanted

Whatever happened to JFPO?

at 1/07/2008 4:54 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

So far they are great and 700 got just what they wanted and that's for us to talk about who will be on.

Eddie is leaving 'EBN in the mornings? That's pretty interesting news. Who's going to replace him? (Nobody's been as good with him as Robin Wood was!)How long has he done mornings? What's he going to talk about on WLW?

A better team would be Eddie and John Phillips. Why they took him off 55KRC, I'll never know!

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORING.

Cunningham's funny stunts are awful also. Darryl Parks? I dont have the space or time to expound on that clown!

Tracy is the best. I always check out Extra Innings when I'm in my car after a Reds game. I just hope he plays Dokken for his intro music and takes calls from Rod from Norwood on the afternoon show.

I thought Tracy's extra innings show was one of the funniest things on the radio. Not sure how it'll play in the afternoon, but I'm looking forward to what he and Fingers do with the time slot.

Completely useless. I'd rather have Willie on, but couldn't they have found someone good to take this show? What are Fingers and Jones going to do day in and day out? We need someone who can create some comedy bits....someone like Gary. I'd rather had seen Duke carry on with someone else than this duo. Hopefully this current incarnation of a show will be euthanized before its to late.

at 1/07/2008 5:07 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

I can't stand Tracey. Sorry I just don't care to listen to him carry on about his favorite subject, HIMSELF!! We'll miss Gary but not Tracey. I fell sorry for Eddie!

at 1/07/2008 5:08 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

I have a great tagline for them: "This is the BBC - short for babes, baseball and cr**" They gave away Duke for that? Maybe if they hired him on as a writer they would have some luck.

at 1/07/2008 5:10 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

These guys are horrible.

The theme some is really gross.

Tracy is such a whiner even when talking in his normal voice...I talked to some businessmen and they can't imagine Tracy and ANYBODY..talk about your ODD couple.

I thought Willi in the afternoon would be FUNNIER than these two clowns.

Sheesh

at 1/07/2008 5:15 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

John Phillips is a great idea. Yeah! Eddie and John Phillips together again! That would be awesome! Tracy is OK once in a while, but I don't think he'll have what it takes for every day. (And I can't imaging him having chemistry with Eddie.

at 1/07/2008 5:16 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Agreed. Eddie will have his hands full trying to keep that show in line with Jones at his side.

Tracy is both egotistical and an idiot -- a bad combination. I'll be shocked if that show doesn't get retooled by the end of the summer.

at 1/07/2008 5:18 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

John Phillips and Eddie would be better then this stuff-Tracy just wants to talk about himself. A little of this goes a long way.

Put me in the Tracy Jones fan club. I would rarely listen to games, but always tuned in after-game for his show. I think he's fabulous on the radio...
I know nothing of Eddie Fingers, but at age 50, it's time to bag the backward cap--like 40 years ago.
Give them a chance--EVERYONE new on talk radio is bad at first. EVERYONE. It takes time to get in the groove.
Tracy is a blast--it is the meshing together that will take time.
But seriously, Eddie, new pub photo. You are no longer a 10 year old frat boy.

Except for the Reds and Sportstalk I will no longer listen to WLW

at 1/07/2008 7:12 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Tracy Jones is so annoying. Can't someone shot him into space.

I like Eddie Fingers, but because of No Talent Jones, I will not listen.

Can't we shoot Jones into space? He has no talent.

BRILLIANT !!!!!

Clear Channel just figured out a way to get rid of another long-time employee (Fingers) without the negative publicity that goes with its mass firings.

Move Fingers into a slot where he doesn't fit, pair him up with an arrogant ex-jock with very limited radio experience. In three months the experiment fails and Fingers slides out the door.

This is very similar to breaking up the Angry Guys, and they were gone within weeks. See if that doesn't happen here. Clear Channel thus, drops another heavy salary.

WLW has bit the big one. Tracy Jones is the most horrible radio personality on the face of the earth. Duke should have stayed with a cast of extras. He was with Gary long enough to make it happen. WLW....sorry....Lance I'm back to 1530 Homer.

at 1/07/2008 8:45 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

I turned it on right about the time Tracy asked Marty B. what his daughter is serving at her wedding Saturday. Does anyone really care? Didn't they have anyting prepared for their debut? This might be the worse decision in broadcast history. I guess it's the FM dial for me. John, can you tell us which FM station has the best traffic reports?

at 1/07/2008 9:25 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

I would rather listen to a cat in heat than Tracy Jones and his festering pie hole go on about how great he is and how no one could possible know anything about baseball unless you have played the game.....What a wannabe loser. I will NOT listen to him... count this longtime listner to Gary Burbank a thing of the past.....

Geez, WLW is dying fast. Parks has got to go. This station USED to have some class (minus Furman). Even Willie resorts to toilet humor since Parks took his Q102 brainpower and applied it.

I just hope that Tracey does not make "Richard from Indian Hill" a focal point of the show. I actually think the bit is kind of funny, but too much exposure will make it obvious that he is not real. For regular listeners, the same guy does the voice for Richard from Indian Hill, Rod from Norwood, and Nick who calls Mcconnell... "well hellloooo Michael". SAME GUY! They get away with it now, but it will be too obvious if they use it daily. I personally cannot believe anyone believes these "characters" are real anyway.

At least they'll have more traffic to report on after all those listeners fall asleep at the wheel.

did richard from indian hill call in today to talk to tracy?

at 1/07/2008 10:59 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Ugh what a shame, no way - no how I am not listening to Tracy "Walking bilboard for himself" Jones.....

at 1/07/2008 11:12 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

The problem with WLW's stunts are that they are not the least bit funny. Willie's claim that he was Gary Burbank's replacement was not the least bit plausible, considering how much time he wastes in the 2 1/2 hours he already has. This is not the way to launch a new program by pretending to be another show. Eddie and Tracey lost a chance pick listeners who tuned in at 3 PM to give them a chance, only to hear Willie doing his same old, tired act and changed the station. My family's contribution to WVXU will certainly increase because of Clear Channel's and WLW's decision.

Since moving to the Cincinnati Area 10 years ago preset 1 on my car radio was always 700 WLW, and nearly all the time spent in my car (50k miles per year) had 700 on the radio.

Today after listening to 30 minutes of this Fingers & Jones garbage 700WLW got pushed to #3. #1 is 1530 Homer (only because of Lance) and #2 is 610 out of Columbus.

The only reason why 700 didn't get completely booted off my dial is because of the Reds games and Paul Harvey. McConnell's big fat ego has only gotten worse, Willy's stupid publicity stunts are insulting, Scott Sloan is miserable to listen to, and Paul Daugherty, while I think he's a good writer is a terrible and boring radio personality.

But Burbank was always there, injecting insane sanity into my daily routine. I wish he didn't have to retire but I understand why he did, it was a great run, but now I miss him even more than I thought I would when I first found out he was leaving.

He left to be followed by this garbage? I tried to give it a chance, I may try again a month or two down the road when they have a chance to smooth out the rocks. I've never heard of Eddie Fingers but he seems like an ok guy. But Tracy Jones? Seriously? Why not keep Duke? Why not bring in some random bum off the street? Just about anyone would be better than Tracy "I was a big league ballplayer listen to me!" Jones.

I guess radio really is about revenue and they can probably sell their get rich quick schemes to the suckers who will listen to this tripe just as well as anyone. It's just really sad to see how far a once great radio station has fallen.

Eddie leaving pretty much kills the Dawn Patrol. The rest of that crew (minus Bob) is garbage.

Will Tracy continue to do Extra Innings, if not, that will be one good thing to come of this.

If Eddie allows Tracy's regular "callers", such as "Rod" and "Richard" to participate in the 3-6 show, I will lose all respect for him.

These guys are set up to fail. You never want to replace a legend and I don't think these are the true people WLW wants to replace a legend. WLW will gamble on these guys and if it works out great, but WLW has someone truly in mind that they want to stick in that seat, just not right after Gary Burbank. Look what happened with Steve Stewart replacing Joe Nuxhall.

at 1/08/2008 5:39 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Can people call Tracy and yell at him because "he never did a radio show" before?

at 1/08/2008 9:34 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Sam @ 8:45...

Don't worry about which FM station has the best traffic reports. If its a Clear Channel station, it is the same traffic aired on WLW, only taped and played back about 10 minutes later.

Most all of their news and traffic is pre-recorded, because they also service stations in Lexington, Lima, Chillocothe and other cities.

By the way, I-75 is running smooth right now in both directions..IN LIMA. Or as one WLW newsgirl called it the other day...LEEEMA.

Is there any place I can tune in to the Ohio Center for Broadcasting station. Their students sound better than WLW.

Tracy's been on the radio for 13 years!
I happen to think that he's a great talk host, and I look forward to listening.

Seriously--in the summers I seek Tracy out. He's a blast!

(no, I'm not Tracy....)

at 1/08/2008 9:53 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Tracy "I played the game" Jones is the most arrogant clown on the air. Talk about someone who made the most out of a pedestrian career in the big leagues. I haven't listened to Fingers in years, but at least he is a radio professional. This won't last long......

at 1/08/2008 9:58 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

More WLW inbreeding. Does anyone know when is Jim Scott's last day on the air. He needs to go.

at 1/08/2008 10:17 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

These guys do actually have a lot of radio experience. It might work, but should have been put on at night to replace Sloan. This is WLW's (always known to stand for World's Lowest Wages)to go cheap with replacement. Fingers get's no more money, and Jones get's a slight bump. MUCH cheaper than actually paying someone with some talent to do a intelligent talk show.
They desperately need help and Parks needs to be shown the door.

People also need to realize that Tracy's "EGO" is shtick. And his characters, Rod and Richard, are not real and actually the same guy. He also does the voice of Nick who calls Mcconnell.
I am done with WLW until Parks is gone and someone comes in and fixes this mess.

at 1/08/2008 10:20 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Are the majority of you people really that stupid that you cant see that Tracy PLAYS UP the ego???

And to bang on him for asking what Marty was serving at his daughter's wedding??? AMAZING!
Its called sarcasm and HUMOR people....LOOK IT UP!

Sure Tracy has an ego, big deal. 99.9 % of the radio personalities out there DO....YOU HAVE TO! But i really think that his sarcasm and wit goes WAAY over all of your heads.

Is it the slickest show on the dial....no. But you rubes are banging on them after being on the air together for only 2 hours.

Lighten up you idiots!

I think the show has great potential. Eddie's a funny guy and I'm a big Tracy Jones fan. People just don't get Tracy Jones. Folks take what he says way too seriously. If you listen he's actually one of the most self deprecating people on the radio.

Here is something to respond to..

How about REAL RADIO!!! Yeah, take me back to the good ole days!

How about real radio news! What the heck is "in depth team coverage"? Can someone tell me, please?

WLW is a shell of what it once was. Can we all agree on that?

Darryl will be heading soon out of town to follow Randy!

Where are the radio greats like Bill Myers and Stan Matlock!

I yearn for the good ole days

Here's the current line-up at the Clear Channel chopping block:

Wildman Walker.
Jim Scott.
Jeff Henderson.
1 more news reader to be named later.
Rich Walburg.
Scott Springer.
Gary Jeff Walker.

All have one thread that dooms their future. AGE. CC and Jacor before them, have a track record of rolling quality employees out the door as they approach and pass the 50 year mark (or in Scott's case, 90).

Oh, Please...if Tracy's "EGO" is shtick it is so NOT FUNNY. I have listened to him in bits and pieces after Reds games...but geez.

also, Jones comes off as a spoiled brat ALL the time. I could not believe he kept making put down comments about race car drivers after Seg reported on the Sparta lawsuit outcome. IT's NOT ALL ABOUT YOU TRACY...so you don't like motorsports. BIG DEAL.

Some of us like F1, IRL and NASCAR.

Eddie Fingers is more tired than Burbank was ever accused of being.

It just makes me miss Gary more and depressed his show is "dead" for all of his long time fans.

To go from laughing at tne end of the day, to being annoyed or listening to NOTHING.

Sad.

Parks is so horrible with station ideas.

And I agree McConnell's ego is so big, I am surprised he can get thru a doorway. I started listening to him 20 years ago....Boy, how he has change. And NOT for the better.

Its amazing how many people are willing to give this WLW programming a shot. I think every listerner the station has must have posted here, unless Darryl Parks was ultra-busy yesterday typing up anonymous comments.

Lets face it, AM radio is going the way of the Post. Its really irrelavant, unless you are older.

This station doesn't deliver quality news. Traffic reports really don't help anyone get to work faster (and I can read the Artimis signs myself, thank you). I can watch the Reds on TV. I can get my conservative commentary on a blog. And if I really need a gutter helmet, I'll look it up online.

They can manipulate all the other stations they want by switching formats, lineups, etc to artificially swell WLW's ratings. The system will eventually collapse, because people are getting fed up with it.

The only thing WLW is good for these days is increasing the subscription rates for Sirius and XM. And those commercials for HD radio??? PLEASE!!! If you can't program the station you already have, why would I want to pay to listen to you suck in HD?

at 1/08/2008 12:49 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Fingers' is only funny to 12 year old males, and Jones biggest fan is himself.
Even if it is schtick, it just isn't entertaining. It was excuciating listening to "Brennaman and Jones on baseball."
Oh well, it was fun while it lasted. I guess I'll load up the MP3 and listen to music (because Cincy music radio has been in the crapper ever since they started pre-programming the shows in Texas).

Anon 10:20 am, YES the majority of people are that stupid and think Tracy has this BIG ego and doesn't even know it!!!

I don't care much for Reds games but if I happened upon Tracy doing extra innings I would listen just to hear his deadpan delivery and the exasperated callers who would try to set him straight.

We non-rubes all know people like those who think Tracy is for real, and it's not hard to push their buttons. And I for one like to do it myself and laugh quite a bit when I hear Tracy do it.

Alot of you haters are the butt of Tracy's joke/style and are too stupid to know it!!!

Can everyone give it a chance? It might work. I'm not a Fingers or Jones fan, but I'll listen. Burbank was good and professional, but had stopped being funny to anyone under 60. And please, everyone get off Lance's jock. He is an okay sports talk host, but is extremely overrated. His Blog is just average and he seems fairly phony because he feigns that he cares about his listeners until they disagree with his stance. He's single-handedly turned the tide against Chad Johnson because his listeners just follow him and his words like sheep. Weird, my word verfication here is wlwdhi

Actually I think Tracy is the butt of his own joke, annoying people to the point they turn him off? Yah that's scathing.

at 1/08/2008 3:36 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Let's see, WLW has more listeners than any other station in the market 12+. Consistently leads or is in the top two 25-54. And so many of you knock the station and D. Parks. Both the Reds and Bengals, which detractors hopefully claim artificially boost their ratings, were terrible this year and the station still dominates.

Why the hate. Few top AM stations are still the market leaders. Even fewer have the local line-up that WLW has. While McConnell is syndicated, it does originate from here and certainly has a Cincinnati feel.

They've managed to keep Rush off their station and have local talent in the local studio 24/7 during the weekdays.

Jones was a lazy baseball player. An even worse broadcaster.

at 1/08/2008 4:29 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

I was toally ready to give the new show a chance, but when I thought I was in for another 3 hours of Willie, I turned off the radio. How many listeners did they lose for their first show? I would have listened to the whole thing if they had not pulled another 'wacky stunt'.

at 1/08/2008 4:33 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

This is excrutiating! They talk about nothing. I don't care about wives in Starbucks, or anything else they have to say. At least McConnell and Willie have something to say, and Willie tries to be entertaing sometimes, like it or not. But Fingers and Jones are just filing in 3 hours with drivel. This show should be on 9-midnight, if at all, not 3-6, radio's primetime.

Hey Daryl, if you're out there, get Duke back before it's too late. He's no Gary by a long shot, but at least he has a chance at entertaining people. He couldn't be any worse. Silence couldn't be any worse.

Duke might not have been able to carry a whole show by himself, but him and Eddie (or him and anyone else) woulda been a lot better than Tracy. Gary credited Duke with 90% of the good stuff on the his show when he was talking to Cunningham!!!

Tracy is one note: one bad, boring note.

At least Duke and Rob Ervin could do an HOUR of Sports or Consequences and the other topic of the day. :-)

I heard todays show off and on in the car...at one point I heard Eddie say he thinks he made a BAD CAREER movie taking a show with Tracy. AGREED! Women yapping about their husbands? PLEASE..who wants to hear about ungrateful females.

Get a topic guys.

I also agree these guys should be on at night.

They have the interest factor of a house plant. I kind of feel bad for Eddie as Tracy is just idiotic with his 50's comment about women..and I heard part of the Richard jerk on the air. OH MY.

WLW after Gary, we hardly knew ye.

I saw get Duke on with Fingers...Tracy just loves to talk about himself too much. SCHTICK or not, it is NOT ENTERTAINING or amusing.

I look for Tracy to get the ax. He is too ignorant to know how HORRIBLE he sounds.

Fingers just seems to wonder what he got himself into or so it would seem. :(

Eddie Fingers is a great guy and a dedicated broadcaster; I'm sure he'll develop a following on WLW no matter who is the side-kick. We tune in to WLW for the news, traffic, sports & weather. And it would be fun to hear some entertaining bits. Eddie is the pro to bring it all together. Just give it some time!

WGRR was funnier today than WLW in afternoon drive! I hate surfing on the radio. I wonder if there have been more trafiic mishaps with people trying to find something to listen to. Maybe Clear Channel wants everyone to swith to XM or SIRIUS, John did CC buy stock or get sold to satellites?

at 1/08/2008 8:53 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Oh, I bet if three more people post that Tracy Jones is tired, unfunny, or something else hateful and negative, they'll totally go against the contract they surely signed, and do exactly what message board participants want.
Settle in people. You're going to have this show for a year or two at least. And that's if it doesn't get better.
You think they were going to come in and do earth-shaking radio after 4.5 hours on the job? Not ONE of you could do better. If you could, you'd be doing it, instead of playing armchair quarterback.

YOU are the worst thing to happen to Cincinnati radio. It's entertainment. Get a life.

Tracy Jones is an embarrassment to the city, the station and himself (he is just to far up his own a$$ to realize it). I gave them a listen, and I will not be listening again any time soon.... one big snooze fest!

Mr. Kiesewetter,

I am sorry I do not know your email address but could you PLEASE give us the option of "COLLAPSE COMMENTS" here so we don't have to scroll so much. This helps old, tired fingers a lot!

It's great to see you updating this site more often, especially DURING the radio show. It helps us do a mini rant to get out our radio angst as our memory tries to say goodbye to Gary and "accept" the new guys.

I am on the fence with Eddie. He can be witty but also has that old stoned hippie sound to him after 20 years.

Tracy is just ARROGANT and PAINFUL. His put down to Seg are just cringeworthy and if it's 'an act', it AIN'T funny.

Does Tracy ever LISTEN to his voice. He is like the whiney EDDIE HASKELL who tries to be nice to people and then turn his back and make snide comments.

Like some wife and mother called to call in to comment about the snooty, lazy women at STARBUCKS and TRACY was nice to her..then a few minutes later told Eddie the woman was jealous because SHE HAD to work outside the home.

OUCH. If I want catty comments, I will stick with watching the View, Tracy.

Thanks again for the site , JK.

OK people - get a grip. TV shows end. Theatrical shows end. Radio shows end. Good things end. It is a fact of life.

I absolutely worshiped James Francis Patrick O'Neil when this "jerk" Gary Burbank took over his show. I thought he was horrible. After many months, I grew to appreciate his talent and humor.

Is there absolutely NOTHING else on any other radio station to listen to from 3 - 6 pm in this market? Does no one know where the buttons are to change channels? Do you not have CD players, cassette players or satellite radios in your cars or at home to listen to other things?

I listened to Fingers and Jones and it was boring. So I changed channels - I turned on the Sirius radio. I listened to WGRR. Burbank is gone and will not be replaced. Stop listening to WLW during that time period and I guarantee you that if the ratings slip, Darryl will find something else that is more interesting.

All WLW had to do is keep Duke, bring Eddie aboard, keep the comedy format (only do new bits) Keep Sports or Consequences, Stump the Band etc. and it would have been a pretty smooth transition. Oh well. I give the show a year.

Sure things end, but must we replace them with complete horse$hit? Tracy Jones is at the bottom of the radio cesspool....there is no hope that he is going to grow on me.

Click...click. Click-click. That is the sound of many radios turning off instead of listening to WLW between 3 and 6 pm. Give it until the famous December cuts Darryl Parks is famous for. Then Eddie and Tracy will get "cut" and they will finally bring in someone else.

As for the "anonymous" that wanted WLW to keep some of Burbanks' things...stump the band and etc...could they have done that? Or was that Burbanks' stuff?

Sorry, I was a long time listener. However, I can't listen to Tracy Jones. I know most of it is an act but he is too obnoxious for me and it seems to come so natural to him.

Eddie Fingers and anybody else would get me back.

Hoping for the day.

I have no clue as to what Parks was thinking with this show, other than a substantial cost savings versus actually hiring someone (remember both these guys ALREADY worked for CC). What can this show be other than what we have already heard, a couple of guys talking about their day. WHO CARES! They are not qualified to discuss current events, politics, or business. It is not sports talk. The can't do interviews or comedy routines. All they can do is talk about "stuff" and who, other than Parks, thinks anyone will want to listen to that in 3 months? They should have AT LEAST started these guys at night to let them build some kind of routine and fan base.

And I disagree that Duke should have carried on without Gary. He did not have good "on air" qualities as shown by Gary doing most of the talking. I detected for years that he probably didn't actually like talking to people, but enjoyed just doing bits. I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't turn down an offer as he was pursuing a writers gig in LA.

Yesterday, it was women in Starbucks....today, we're discussing the best and worst dressed and what Fingers should wear to work (on the radio). Have these guys prepared anything? Apparently, if you can read the entertainment section of CNN.COM 10 minutes before showtime and then babble about it for an hour, you too can have a talk show.

Duke had more talent than either of these two, and he's got to be rolling in his professional grave right now listening to this. I agree that they should have salvaged some of the non-Gary-dependent bits from the BBC and added someone to work with Duke. Duke and Fingers would work.

Some guy posted yesterday about Burbank's politics being akin to Air America's and how that seeped into the show.

Why did that get deleted? I guess JK, or anyone who works at Gannett, doesn't want us to talk about liberal bias in the media.

Typical.

Jesus, Mary and Josephine. NO SHOW PREP for this show?

Tracy is like a girl with his clothes obsession and the cost of his shirts and suits. TO FRICKING WEIRD.

Fingers must feel he is on a SUICIDE CAREER MOVE.

Sad. Today I was at a traffic light a little after 5pm...when Tracy was STILL wanting to talk the WORST DRESSED LIST, you could hear the snapping sound of folks changing stations.

Tracy is the EDDIE HASKELL of radio.

ANNOYING, OBNOXIOUS and SELF-ABSORBED.

I am feeling sorry for Fingers.

Could this all be a radio ploy? Remember when Jim Scott left 700 WLW to go to another station only to then have him come back in a couple of months. Watch Eddie go back to WEBN soon.

I would not be surprised if this turns out to be a stunt...that Fingers is going to take over the show on his own after some kind of WWE skit with Tracy being "fired", or "suspended", or "demoted to taking over SportsTalk".

If I were producing the 3-6 block, I'd keep both Eddie and Tracy. However, I would add some of the previously mentioned items (Stump, Sports or Consequences), air a Senseless Survey from time to time but, drum roll please, add Bob Berry to the mix. Bring back Fred Geschnottenon! Bring back some humor to the 3-6 shift. Make radio entertaining. (WOW-what a concept!)

David Letterman has been doing stump the band for years, and sports or consequences and top six could still be done as well. Duke is actually a great writer, and would have a lot to offer for a new show. My guess is they never even talked to him, or didn't want to pay $9.25 an hour : )

I find this Tracy guy to be beyond anything remotely interesting.

So, I guess he could catch or field a baseball?

So can 90% of kids on my son's t-ball league.

Would Parks like to interview them for a radio gig?

at 1/10/2008 11:48 AM Blogger Sophia said...

Johnny Carson did STUMP the band for YEARS for you young people.

Letterman even plays the Tonight show theme briefly when he plays it on his show.

Nobody said Gary invented it. and for those too ignorant, Gary was not liberal and was in the service years ago and was big on supporting the troops. I have a doctor that had tapes of shows sent to him for the Gulf War (back before Internet) and Burbank kept him sane.

Gary was pretty good at poking fun at BOTH sides of the political animal.

I briefly heard Tracy on the Jim Scott show ...Tracy was whining about how hard this new show was compared to extra innings...did anybody catch that conversation? Marty B told Tracy to just be himself.

Well, 'himself' ain't made for radio entertainment.

I would rathere here Eddie play Sports or Consequences with Rob Ervin or Top Six or ANYTHING than this meandering...you can turn the show on at the beginning of each hour to SEE if these guys are saying anything..then click on later, and Tracy is still talking about clothes.

?????

That's Entertainment??

Ugh

For those of you who hate it, give it time. I've never heard a new talk host or a new talk team who didn't stink initially. Never.

It takes time to develop and mesh.
We all get better with practice and time.

I just thought that was obvious.

The only way Cincinnati radio will change is for people to actively make a choice not to support the advertisers who pay for it.

If you don't like this new show, write down all the names of the advertisers, call them, and tell them: you are supporting a worthless endeavor, and if you continue to pay for it, I will not buy from your business.

That is the ONLY way you can really get the attention of a station. The ratings are too easily manipulated - and there too few owners of stations in this market.

I really don't think not listening is the answer - it will just continue until people really start getting to the advertisers.

In the meantime, its so much more rewarding to pay my $13 a month for satellite radio. People have said before, oh - there's a satellite radio exec posting. Nope - I won't even mention the one to which I subscribe.

I just feel so much more satisfaction with my investment, knowing that I am paying for something and getting what I really want out of it.

I am suprised about how many people liked Duke and how many hate Tracy. Duke is not at all witty and could not survive a day without Gary shouldering the burden of hosting a radio show. There is no way that they could have carried on without Gary. Burbank himself was 95% of the show.

I am not a big Tracy fan either, but I thought more people liked him and "got it" with his shtick. From what I read here, he is generally disliked by most. Sadly, like Sloan, they will probably keep this thing on the air because it is cheap. Parks must go!

There was nothing to salvage from the Burbank show after Gary left. Burbank's show jumped the shark when Doc Wolfe left. Duke was a poor substitute and the writing suffered greatly. The bits he did personally were not funny.

Give Fingers and Jones a chance.

at 1/10/2008 3:36 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

Gary Burbank himself credited Duke with making the show funny, and for writing things to make Gary funnier, believe it or not, comics and actors often use writers!!! Doc still contributed to the show too, along with a bunch of freelance guys(haven't you read Kies' articles before!!)

As far as giving Tracy and Eddie a chance, I think one point no one has brought up is that Gary was talking about retirement for YEARS....ANNOUNCED HIS RETIREMENT IN, LIKE...MAY???.....

And this is what the geniuses came up with????????????????

Must have been a lot of power lunches missed in Kenwood.

Two Points...

1. This board, as always, sound more negative than the general community. If people are simply satisfied, they don't run to the media blog to write that they're okay with the way things are.

2. Clear Channel is in the process of keeping costs down, and cutting them every holiday season. So whether you think Parks is good or evil, he has absolutely zilch to say about the budget for this new show.
CLEAR CHANNEL DOESN'T HIRE. CLEAR CHANNEL FIRES.
So the only way to get a new show, is to use people who are already on the payroll, for now.

If you're screaming for a replacement, you have to think of someone in the building, who will do it without a raise. And if you are calling "Bring Back _____," then you're barking up a dead tree.

I have never been a fan of Tracy. I could stand him for the two minutes that he was on with Marty, but giving him his own drivetime show is a bad idea. I don't have a problem with Eddie. I would like to have seen Eddie and Duke. Maybe this is a test and WLW will say "Oopps, we missed with this one."

The CLEAR radio choice from 3 to 6 is the Sean Hannity show on 55 Wkrc. I like Eddie Fingers, but he needs to be back on WEBN in the mornings. This kind of reminds me of the whole Katie Couric flop.

Tracy Jones is one of the most entertaining radio personalities in the country (when he does his thing).

This pairing is a disaster!

Eddie was entertaining with the great chemistry of himself, Robin Wood and Bob "the Producer." When Robin left it fell apart and I quit listening.

Tracy and Eddie try not to step on each other and force uncomfortable, boring conversation.

Maybe this will eventually workout. But for now it's unlistenable and an embarrassment.

Tracy was the perfect replacement for Gary, but the decision maker(s) should have left Tracy to develop the show and personnel (if any others) and guests.

This made as much sense as if Clear Channel would have paired Fingers with jackass McConnell.

Why would you think a privately owned Clear Channel would do anything to make local radio better than it did when it was publicly traded?

Isn't it odd, also, that this mega deal sails through regulation, along with the spin-off sale of the TV stations, and yet the XM Sirius merger drags on, and on, and on, and on and on.....?

The National Association of Broadcasters is so scared of this merger because they know satellite really is big competition for audience.

Sirius had what 600,000 subsribers four years ago - and now has more than 8,000,000? Eight million people willing to PAY to listen to radio. That means all those people don't want to take what NAB members give away FREE.

Sounds like competition in the marketplace to me!

Tracy's extra innings show turned into a poor man's version of the Phil Hendrie show. At times it was amusing but it certainly wasn't a sports talk show. I could only take about 5 minutes of the Fingers/Jones before I was bored out of my mind. If he hasn't already, I'm sure Nick/Rod/Richard will be calling them in a desperate attempt to stir up some "faux" controversy. That's if he's not too tired from calling McConnell's show and trying to breathe some life into that snooze fest.

at 1/14/2008 9:43 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

McConnell's show, since he can no longer can speak to local issues, has become a complete bore with him retreading all his old general interest musings into each show.

It is not that these musing would not be entertaining, but not after having heard them already ten times over.

Sadly, Nick/Rod/Richard has already made his appearance pretending to be at the BCS game and that the OSU fans had no class. They spent the better part of a show dealing with this "make-believe" observation from a "pretend" person who "pretended" to be there. They are already having to make up pretend issues to get people to call. SO SAD! PARKS YOU STINK!

I think this is a ridiculous pairing. To think that Tracy can talk about anything but sports (which he doesn't do well at either) is crazy. at 1/17/2008 12:07 AM Anonymous Anonymous said...

I'm not as appalled at this new lineup as I was at first, but I still think their show has no direction at all. Basically, it's a 3-hour show about stuff that happened to them (well, mostly Tracy) since they were last on the air. Or maybe someone read the news and now it's the topic of the day. That format could conceivably work for 30-60 minutes, but they need some actual content. I've given up any hope of Burbank-esque style entertainment, but they could still copy some of the interactive bits...like Sports or Consequ. or Top Six style call-in fun.

And sooner or later, Tracy is going to insult every possible guest so that they'll never get anyone on. I know he doesn't really mean any of it, but sometimes he doesn't know when to pull back from the edge.

These guys STINK. Oh, did anybody see the news article where DParks says he expects them to BE NUMBER ONE IN THE SLOT, SAME AS BURBANK???

From a lifelong Burbank fan - Fingers is great, but Jones...gimme a break. How long will we have to listen to his, "I'm better than everyone else" antics. What about Scott Sloan with Fingers?

Sloany mentioned something about Fingers and Jones splitting up yesterday on his late show last night, but I didn't catch the whole story...what's the scoop?

I think Eddie would have fit right in with Burbank's gang, keeping basically the same format as before, just without all of Burbank's characters.

By the way, whatever happened to Duke Sinatra and the boys, did they all get the axe when Gary retired?
