More Of The Two Angry Guys?

So here's a surprise: Richard Skinner, one of the "Two Angry Guys" radio team, wasn't angry that he got fired unexpectedly Monday morning. And after talking to him and Tom Gamble, the other one of the "Two Angry Guys," I'm convinced that they'll be back on radio by the end of the year -- on SupertalkFM96.5, the new FM talk station with Andy Furman afternoons. It's just a hunch, but a good hunch, I think.

Background: For 11 years, former Post sportswriters were radio's popular "Two Angry Guys." First on WBOB-AM (1160), and since 2000 on Clear Channel's 1360 and 1530. They were so good that in November, when Clear Channel fired Andy Furman, that Tom Gamble was tapped to replace Furman as WLW-AM "SportsTalk" host. In February, Gamble decided he didn't want to work 6-9 p.m. and miss his family, and turned down the job. Since March, when his contract expired, the only radio he's been doing is "Sunday Morning SportsTalk" with Skinny. Skinner's ratings dropped without co-host Gamble, and he was fired Monday. Don't expect Gamble to continue on"Sunday Morning SportsTalk." He may be done at Clear Channel too, after what happened to his buddy Skinny.

So let me connect some dots:
--Skinner seemed confident Monday that he'd find a new radio job. He wasn't depressed or worried. "This isn't the end of the Two Angry Guys," he said.
--Gamble tells me that Clear Channel talked to him about taking over the Homer morning gig. I assume this means replacing his good friend Skinner. He refused. "I thought we were good together. I feel loyal to our show. I think the "Two Angry Guys" can still work."
--Jeff Davis, assistant program director at SupertalkFM96.5, says "We'd love to have the Angry Guys." (Sure they would!)
--SupertalkFM96.5 has syndicated Mancow in the morning that's not tearing up the town. When Mancow's first year is up in early November, it would be about 6 months after Skinner and Gamble left Clear Channel. That would be the typical length of a "non-compete" clause.
--SupertalkFM96.5 needs a local morning show to establish itself as a talk station. You gotta be strong in morning drive, radio's prime time.
--What other station in town would want a morning sports talk team?

So my best guess: The Two Angry Guys will be on Supertalk96.5 by Thanksgiving.

Sounds like they think they'll be working somewhere eventually. What's your prediction?

I agree and then the Bigger one 96.5 would beat very dominant in the ratings.

You're spot-on, Kiese. They'll be on SuperTalk ASAP. When one is fired, is a no-compete usually null and void? Thats my only question.

ClearChannel can keep firing their talent. They'll learn eventually that they are beatable. Its not the station, its the talent. Good luck filling Burbank's spot.

I absolutely thought that Richard Skinner was a hack. But, I still listened in the 9am hour. Better than McConnell's network show. Even though he hated Huggins and JR, he did keep it entertaining and showed knowledge in alot of sport subjects. I thought that he did a better job alone than Tom Gamble.

I find it interesting that Skinny gets the axe after bashing the new replacement for Furman for his column on Bowden. I wonder if that had anything to do with his release.

I just know that Jr. is smiling, if he even knows about it. The "two angry men" are no more. At least until you can hear them in stereo.

As far as Lewis, so what. He should be okay. It's Mo that is pathetic. And MORE are time for Cutler?!?!?!?!

Did anybody hear him make a case a couple of weekends ago on 700 that Tony Perez belongs in the Hall of Fame?!?! I guess that's why he was voted in about seven years ago. Oh yeah, nobody else heard it because next to nobody listens to him. Cutler is a joke and easily the worst talk show host since Marconi started this crap.

Oh, please, let that happen. Mancow is horrible. Unlistenable.

I hope they do come back on Supertalk. At least then they won't have to be worried about getting fired for speaking the truth about how bad the Reds are.

I am hoping you are right and that the Two Angry Guys land on the FM dial....they were great together and I have been tuning in on Sundays to hear the 1 show a week they had been doing together. I think Clear Channel botched this one...they definitely should have brought the boys back together in the mornings when Gamble declined to take the SportsTalk slot...I wish them well and look forward to hearing them together before the end of the year!

Well, count me as one who thought Two Angry Guys was as good as radio got! Look forward to their reunion on another station.

And again, Clear Channel is absolutely, singlehandedly ruining the very concept of local radio.

It's a damn shame....

And by the way, the sheer arrogance of McConnell is really making him almost unlistenable... Mike, you used to be fun to listen to, but now your intolerance and your rush-rush mode is really not fun anymore. I used to be a huge fan. Now I don't even turn you on. Another damn shame...

Clear Channel is in business to make money based off of ratings. Homer was losing in the earlya am with Skinner so its bye bye Richard. Richard knows this as does anyone in the radio gigs.
Moe Eggers is not the answer, but lets not forget this time slot was once the slot for Dennis Walker. At least Moe is better than Dennis but not by much. Wait until 700 WLW replaces the tired Burbank afternoon drive. McConnell's show has tanked since he went network. He is just awful now without a local slant. I am sure they will botch it when they replace Burbank. How about more of a talk/news format. I know that is asking too much. Then Scott in the morning. They ought to replace that tired talent.

It looks like I can change my pre-sets from 1530 to 1450 until November, when I'll change them to 96.5.

I have been listening to Moe and Doyle this morning. Where in the hell did they find these two clowns? Oh well, the program manager for that station used to give traffic reports, so go figure!

So when is CC going to send a C&D to Furman for saying "The Bigger One". How about he sets a goal to have a good show and gets over the fact he was FIRED from WLW.

I tried listening to Tim Lewis this morning......unbelievably horrible. I'd rather listed to a cat cough up a hairball for 3 hours. Mo Egger is a tool, and him and Doyel are just babling to each other like a couple of teenage girls. I guess they are having to do that because no one is calling in.

What ever happened to marc Amazon? Isn't he still around? I thought he was great before he got run off a few years ago. Last I heard he was in NC doing radio, but I thought I read that he left and was possibly coming back. He would have been a MUCH better choice than the "Big Dog" and Mo - who matches his grating voice with a grating radio personality. What a trainwreck. I feel bad for Doyle - who I actually like.

I would have to say 1530 is in trouble with doyle and mo, I was not a big fan of skinner but the 9-noon guys will be lucky to make it to Memorial Day.
I agree with Rick in Hyde Park, Mcconnell has become to full of himself, a total waste of time to tune in wlw while he is on.

Go get 'em Gamble and Skinny! Take CC down.

I'd be worried if I am on the 1530 payroll.

Don't put the blame solely on Yidman. This whole disaster of a move smacks ripe of Darryl "The corporate sell out" Parks. I am sure the CC San Antonio Weasels are trying like heck to erase the bottom line (which by the way, used to be successful) and make it more appealing to sell off to some investment bankers. Parks is selling his soul to the corporate devil and sacrificing what once was a very good radio station. Maybe Seg can record 24 hours worth of sports reports....oh wait, first we have to get the overnight religion off the 50,000 watt sports station first. What a disaster of a station and what happens to the Not as Big One if they lose the Reds radio after this year.....ouch.

rumor going around cc offices is that jeff picero is coming back and will get a permanent slot.

at 5/22/2007 1:21 PM Blogger Wayman said...

Shoot me now if Jeff Picero comes back. His show was horrible the last time around. There has to be someone better out there than Mo, Tim and Doyle. I tried listening this morning, I just couldn't stand it. I even tried getting the replay of the reds highlights that they use to do at the top of every hour. Instead they played one replay at the top of each hour.

at 5/22/2007 1:39 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

I could see Picero, he's a yes man and agrees with every caller, then turns around and contradicts himself by agreeing with the next caller. If Skinner got fired because of blasting on the Reds, that is ridiculous and for people to complain about him blasting on the Reds, what kind of person are you? They stink, don't you have any respect for yourself? Or are you just a blind fan?

I love reading all these comments about Clear Channel and all of their mis-handling of stations and those at those stations behind the micorphone. One of the funniest guys on the radio is good ole Seg Dennison. He reports his printed reports ok, but have you ever notice when he does a talk show that he can't really put two sentences back to back without stuttering. What a babbler. Hello Seg, whats up dude!!!! Oh man,Cincinnati radio, where else could it be this much fun.

The next big one surely has to be 96.5. Just a matter of time. I hope they get that damn clown Man Cow off of there soon!!. Does everyone realize that he is not even on the air in his home town? What does that tell you.

at 5/22/2007 3:14 PM Anonymous Anonymous said...

"Why is Jim Rome on the air here?" Is that seriously what you asked? Jim Rome is one of the most recognized sport talk show hosts in the nation. And unfortunately he is about the only legitimate "sport" talk show host this station has left between 5:30 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. Don't get me wrong Lance is good when the local sports news is buzzing, but in times like these when the Bengals are in the off-season, the Bearcats are still rebuilding, and the Reds season is over after the first month; Lance's show just isn't very good especially from a sports perspective. Personally, I do not tune into a sports radio show for three hours of hearing about the callers "Guilty Pleasures" or good books they've read. I know all sports talk shows get off-track at times and go away from sports, but good sports talk shows don't spend three hours a day on them three, four, or five days a week. I mean look at the topics that have dominated Lance's three hour show over the past few weeks. The majority have very little to do with sports. I turned on about a week ago and heard him making a list of movies. I immediately turned it over to 1450 and listened to a high school baseball game (don't get me started on that issue). As prepared as I believe Lance is, I really am starting to question his ability to host a three hour "sports" radio program, five days a week. Right now if you take out his nonsense topics and the what seems like 100+ plus phone calls he takes per show, he probably provides us with less than an hour worth of sports content.

As for Skinny and Gamble, when I first started listening to 1360 the Two Angry Guys were what kept me listening. At the time ESPN radio was still on 1160 and could be picked up much easier on my radio than 1360, I found the Angry Guys much more entertaining than Mike & Mike. When they were split up, I knew both would soon be leaving Clear Channel just for the simple reason that they were so good working together that individually they would not be able to meet that standard. I'm sure Skinny's ratings dropped because of this. People weren't listening because Skinny was bad by himself, they just knew what they were hearing wasn't as good as when he and Gamble were together. I think after today, a lot of those listeners regret that subconscious decision. Skinny was a good host that found ways to talk sports the majority of the time. Imagine that, a sports talk show host actually talking sports.

I also want to mention that I believe the dip in ratings from the fall until now is also due to the fact that in the fall the Bengals were playing, UC Basketball was starting, and the Reds' hot stove league was going on. That's pretty big time of the year for sports in this area. But as winter passed and spring came, the Bearcats weren't really competitive this year and the Reds were out of it almost before the season began. That's difficult for a local sports talk show host (just ask Lance).

I hope the Angry Guys do come back together. I know I will be a regular listener just as I was not to long ago. I'm sorry Clear Channel. This time you really overestimated the power of the 1530 Homer name because I'm not listening to Lewis, Moe, or Doyle. There are way too many options both FM & AM for me to waste my time listening to the garbage they are putting out today.

I thought that Skinner was right on the money yesterday, perhaps he know what was going on, as he was way over the top in comparison to his usual self.

Agreed that Tim Lewis was, at best, unlistenable this morning. I tried, believe me, I tried. Painful to listen to.

I really do think that Clear Channel screwed the pooch on this one, folks. Not that they care, but whatever listeners were left are going to run, in droves, from the morning show as it sits now.

Piecoro was, and is, the worst personality to ever host a talk show, in any city, at any time slot, bar none.

Listening to s smack-off for 3 hours is good sports radio? Or the neverending emails complimenting how great he is? Constantly bringing up the Juice? I am not condoning what Lance does, but Rome does more than you think.

"Why is Jim Rome on the air here"

Maybe it’s because he has millions of listeners nationwide and brings in big advertising dollars, you know, stuff radio stations are looking for.

ANON @ 3:14PM you hit the nail on the head about Lance. He is okay when he talks about sports which is maybe 15 min per 3 hour show. I have an idea for his next "off the beaten path" subject, how about sports.

I can't stand spending my whole commute home listening to callers talking about sports athletes body parts

I agree with everyone else here. 2 Angry Guys, awesome. 1 angry guy, not as good, but still better than what I heard this morning. It doesn't get any more boring than that! Doyel and Mo were abysmal. Lewis, just too boring for me. Besides, the angry guys give good advice on how to deal with women as well. Especially Tom.

Moe and Doyle could be the worst radio I have ever heard. Did you hear Doyle ask Krivsky if he was going to call up "Wayne Denorfia" to replace Hamilton. If it was a joke, it was awful just like the rest of them. How embarassing to have the GM of a major league team interviewed by those two guys.

Just 2 guys talking to each other with horrible high school locker room humor at best.

Sports radio in this town is painfull. Lance should change the name of his show to The List, thats all it is. Lists of all kinds of meaingless crap. Then all the "Oh yeah i forgot about that one" and "I will put it on the list". Lewis is horrible, his thoughts are unoriginal and scattered. Someone needs to put The FISH back on.

I hate anonymous posts. That said, to answer a few questions.

1. The Fish is back on weekends on 96.5.
2. The Two Angry guys could be a very good morning show on 96.5, especially with the right female sidekick and if they expanded beyond sports (like they did many times anyway).
3. McConnel's network show isn't that much different from his local shows, especially now that he brings local topics to the national audience or vice versa.
4. I'm glad I'm no longer in radio...people either really love you or really hate you (Didn't work in Cincy).

Clear Channel as a company must do something right......they are a multi-billion dollar company and I do not think they hire and fire just for the heck of it.

I am sure half of you people think that Skinny got fired because he was bashing the Reds or did something crazy. Yep, you are right....they just decided this yesterday and found three guys to replace the one in a matter of minutes. Think about it? Lewis has been off the airwaves talking sports for 7 years.......Doyel, as far as I know has never done radio until today and Mo has been the "fill-in" guy for people who are on vacation and never actually had a show for him to own.
I am going to give them a listen each day, maybe not the full time period but, I am interested in it to see how good or bad they become. Either way it is still local sports.

I still miss the old 1160BOB. I thought they had a solid lineup from top to bottom. A perfect world for me would be to get all those guys back on one station again.

I liked Lewis and it's nice to hear him back on the air. I do hate that it's at Skinner's expense.

I hope Tom and Richard are able to join forces again. Each was good on their own but they were best together. I didn't think Gamble was the right man for the WLW Sportstalk job so I was glad he turned it down. I had hoped he'd rejoin Richard on mornings, hopefully that will happen on 96.5 instead.

Bring back Chris Collinsworth. Sports talks was interesting when they had Furman, Collinsworth, Dinkle, and some others around.

Andy Furman gets on my nerves, but sometimes I think he is the only guy in town with a real Sports Talk personality. The rest love sports, but don't seem like naturals behind the mic.

I think Paul Daugherty is doing allright. But, I think all Sports Talk hosts reach a point where they get annoying.

I hardly ever listened to the 2 Angry Guys. I think a lot of people would say they sound like they are always griping and whining. The fact that they are called the "2 Angry Guys" kind of turned me off. You know you were in for a lot of griping and whining with that name!

I agree with some of the criticisms of Lance. Sometimes he's good, but he goes way off topic with lists, off the beaten path topics, women he would sleep with, etc.

Maybe Sports radio in general is just a bad idea! ha

Doyle filled in for Lance recently as well, and has been a frequent guest on his program. Both were available and are local, so tt's not too much of a stretch to say that this was done on short notice.

And let's stop with the "bring back Collinsworth" talk. CC isn't coming back to local radio, Pete Rose isn't going to manage the Reds, and Ickey Woods has a regular gig coaching that women's football team, so he ain't coming back either.

And as for the Chris Henry story and ripping on 12 and 5, why not rip your local NOKY Prosecutor for running his mouth out of turn? Henry has done enough to warrant all the criticism he has gotten, but to out and out slander him like the hack ambulance chaser wannabe a big city DA in NOKY. 12 & 5 were reporting the story that was given to them by the prosecutor, not them making it up. I did not know that Lewis was working at WLW......I am usually asleep I guess when he is on.

I do wonder though.....what was the reaction the Two Angry Guys got when they were first on the air 15 years ago. It takes time to cater to what the listener likes and I hardly feel like 2 days is enough time for anyone to get it together.

Trust me....I want to listen to quality radio in my car and home and what is on 1530 is not great quality......yet. I do think that in 15 years of doing talk radio even I could be pretty good.

Bottom line, Cincy talk radio is terrible. Lance is hokey and obvioulsy living in pleasantville (gay), the Angries act wore thin about 5 years ago, and Cutler is an absolute moron. I for one welcome Gregg Doyle, he has good enough opinions to get a national column, something Daughterty, Skinner & Gamble never accomplished.

I will not listen to 1530 or 700 sports talk because of Alan Cutler (the worst since Wild Man), Tracy Jones (arrogant amateur psychologist), Lance McAllister (too many stats, too little hardball), Tim Lewis (boring), and Moe Eggers (yawn). Started listening to Bob and Tom, and will probably stick with them, with an occasional switch to 96.5.

Forgive me if this is out of place. I'm just looking for a forum - any forum - where I can express my absolute disdain for the Mancow program. If anyone - and I mean ANYONE - has any promising information about this jerk's declining ratings, please share them. His program replaced Neil Boortz almost a year ago, and my stomach acid hasn't been the same since. Just this week, he had one of his mindless minions on the street asking people about the death of Heath Ledger, posing as a "brother in grief" and it made me want to crawl through the dials and choke the idiot. How does a talentless, classless and tasteless buffoon like this get a format? I've heard his ratings aren't even good in his home market. Why export the garbage then? Get him and his clowns on the street where they belong, selling their "craft" more honestly. Thanks for enduring my rant. Frustrated.
